Help us flag offensive blog comments

A couple people chose to comment on the "Letters: unfiltered" blog page about Gov. Sarah Palin's announcement of being pregnant. Their comments were crude, mean-spirited, illiterate and sexist. The posts were removed yesterday.

One person mentioned in the discussion string that the offensive original post remained online 12 hours later. We cannot monitor the page hourly. A post that goes up after dinnertime won't be seen by staff until after breakfast the next workday.

We encourage online users to help us monitor the site for offensive material. If you cannot flag a comment, feel free to send an e-mail to content@adn.com notifying staff of inappropriate blog comments.

Curiosity compels me to ask:

Is there one set of standards for what is or is not offensive or to the various people who "moderate" make their own decisions?

By way of example, earlier today a flagged comment using "Hitler" in a personal attack was cleaned up. (Alaska Politics)

The very same comment, word for word, was reposted within one hour by the same originator. Again it was flagged.

The post that had been cleaned up earlier remained in the sanitized form; a number of other posts were deleted, but the re-post of the "Hitler" attack was allowed to remain.

What logic is functioning? Are "Hitler" comparisons OK...if so, why might the first one have been cleaned up?

Discouraging to note

that the ADN moderators have great tolerance for anti-Catholic material on the "Unfiltered" blog.

There was a patently offensive post near the end of last week which I and others "flagged". It was removed.

Within hours the same "author" posted the identical material again. I and others "flagged" it very quickly. Now, several days later, it remains.

As I said, discouraging.

Update:

After festering there for several days it's finally gone!

Perhaps it's coincidence or maybe it really IS that talking about an offensive missive here is more effective than "flagging" and e-mails concerning that type of trash.

Anyway, Thank You!

Flagging Offensive Posts

In my experience it takes ADN staff 4-18 hours to remove offensive posts, sometimes they are not removed even after being flagged. The ADN system may be need to be revamped.

It was disheartening

to see a sort of safe-haven schedule included in the post that started this thread. Of course there is no clear standard relative to obscenity. If in doubt, review the KUDO thread on the "Letters: Unfiltered" board. On the other hand, it's refreshing to see Big City standards, as appropriate for perhaps San Francisco, seeming to apply in this small community. A step toward becoming more cosmopolitan?
