Anchorage pollster Ivan Moore sent the press a poll this week saying that Ethan Berkowitz would easily win the Democratic primary for the U.S. House if it were held now. Moore’s poll shows Berkowitz with 45 percent of the vote and neither Diane Benson nor Jake Metcalfe breaking 20 percent.
What Moore did not mention anywhere in the press release, though, is that he is working for the Berkowitz campaign.
Moore said Berkowitz didn’t pay for the poll (a client who didn’t want to be named paid for it). Moore also pointed out he’s made no secret of his ties to Berkowitz.
“Let’s face it, most people know I’m working with him and am close to him, I don’t hide that,” he said.
Besides, Moore said, “the numbers are the numbers,” and aren’t influenced by his relationship with Berkowitz. He conceded, though, he wouldn’t have sent the poll to the press if he hadn’t wanted everyone – including potential donors—to know Berkowitz’ numbers.
The poll shows Congressman Don Young beating his challenger in the Republican primary, Gabrielle LeDoux, by a two-to-one margin. Moore said his polling also shows that Berkowitz would beat Young in the general election, by a more than 5 percent margin.

Federal rules
The campaign in question is under federal rules, not state rules, APOC, etc.
I don't know what those rules say, but it is common knowledge that the White House, the 2 parties, candidates, and various interest groups are frequently commissioning polls.
Perhaps someone with knowledge can enlighten us on the federal rules, and how they differ from state rules.

state and federal law apply. The state law cannot be in conflict with a federal law.
It's that grey matter and loopholes in the law that politicians like to play with........................
It's called testing the waters ..........................
Let's see how much the DCCC paid for the poll if true.

Private individuals can pay for polls. So long, the polls are made public and not intended for the sole use of the beneficiary of such information.

I partially agree, but what I don’t agree with is the double standard being applied by some in regard to polls that companies or private citizens have paid for to show numbers for conservatives. (and please don’t bring up Kott or Koring, because this is not an attempt to stick up for them)
Just in case you didn’t already know,
The definition of a double standard applied unfairly is:
a principle, rule, or expectation that is applied unfairly to different groups, one group usually being condemned for the slightest offense while the other is treated far more leniently. (cough: Begich)
I would like some Liberals to read and repeat the above definition three times every night before bed.

It isn't IBEW that is accused of purchasing up to 100 polls and funnelling the information straight to the candidates. It is VECO. Now, find a string of 100 polls clandestinely fed to Democrats in Alaska, and you might hear some agreement on the double standard, but at this point, VECO supported primarily the R's.

I believe he would win the Democratic primary with no problem. In my opinion he is a much better candidate than Slimy Jake Metcalf.
I do not think, however, he will win the general. From what I have seen other than on this blog and in the media, Don still has many, many supporters.
Now what is the Mayor going to run for? He could not win a general over Stevens if Stevens were in jail during the election (not that I think he is guilty of anything).
Talk about support, Stevens has it and totally deserves it.
Perhaps the mayor is looking at Gov in 2010? He is already taking shots at blaming Palin for his overspending and not being able to fund things like pools for our kids. I personally think with 4th Avenue Theater, AWWU, his relationships with Hyde, Leonard, Bobrick, etc. that he has far too much Begich, I mean baggage, to win anything.
It is going to be an interesting couple of years!!!!!

Factual, straight forward, and realistic opinions with supporting evidence, tend to get shot down on this blog.
Remember:
Questionable ethics violations or frowned upon behavior conducted by the Boy Wonder tend to disappear every time they are brought up.
Also, to answer your question about what will Begich run for? My guess is Miss Alaska. Once the liberals have successfully outlawed any activity which discriminates by allowing only one gender to participate, The Boy Wonder will be a shoe in for Mr./Ms. Alaska.
His wardrobe, smile, and ability to answer any question at any time are unbeatable.
He will be crowned in 2010 by former Governor Palin.

and son, I have been reading up on any and all connections to that Pac-West no-bid contract. I still can't connect the dots, but there seemed to be a "rush" to get this particular contract steered to Pac West.

Other items -- such as a company-paid ticket to the Superbowl for Randy Pugh, the father of one of Sen. Lisa Murkowski's former staffers -- were legitimate business expenses, he said.
He testified repeatedly that such expenses -- including trips on corporate jets for Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, and Murkowski, plus AIC-paid trips by Stevens and other politicians, friends and family to a Bristol Bay fishing lodge -- were justified because they help build important relationships.
"You've got to have those relationships to deal in business. It's not just about going out and bidding on contracts. ... You do have to wine and dine people," Marrs said.
After a news query this year about Stevens' stays at the lodge -- a possible Senate ethics breach -- the senator sent checks to CIRI for his 2001 and 2003 expenses at the lodge.

Supporters? I guess half a million will buy one lots of supporters. If it cost Don a half a million dollars in campaign contributions and he has not been indicated, YET, I can imagine how much he will spend on attorney fees after he is indicted. Alaska is tired of slime-ball politicians...just ask Frank. Alaskans voting for the candidate just because they have an R next to their name is over. Biggest bunch of slime-balls in the history of our State.

Yes, Alaskans are finally waking up and isn't it good to see? There are some decent Republican politicians out there, (although besides Palin/Parnell I'm having a little of trouble thinking of any...Gary Stevens maybe?) but many of them have just become too arrogant, too beholden to industry, too out of touch with everyday Alaskan voters. I mean the R's have been that way for years, but people are finally beginning to realize it. I don't think Young will win another election this lifetime. And since he's coming back as a dung beetle, probably not next lifetime either. (I jokes! I'm sure he's a wonderful grandfather or whatever, let's just get him out of office already!) Lisa probably will win her next (lucky for her, she fell far from the tree), and probably Stevens will too, unless convicted or at least indicted. But even with all his money, Young is history and this is a great thing for Alaska! I don't totally love the D candidates, but any of them will be a major improvement, and even Benson could beat Young this time.
Or am I just naive? Time will tell...

D's can only win by discrediting the wrongdoings and alleged wrongdoings of others. They do nothing to win on their own merit.
The D's were going to save the world by taking over control of Congress, and the approval rating of Congress has gone down and they have accomplished nothing.
Even if something happens to DY, another R will win in his place, and don't tell me we do not have any good R's in this state!!!!!
Example.....Knowles ran because he thought he could easily defeat Frank.....in steps Sarah, a fairly unknown politician, and beats him as a R.
If something happens to Don, don't be surprised to see a new R step out and win against any one of those D candidates.

I did not say we have no good R's in this state. I implied we have few good R politicians, a statement I'm happy to stand by.
I agree about the D's in US congress, but the reason their rating is so low is because they haven't cleaned up Bush's mess!
You're right about another R maybe stepping in if something happens to Young. Like I said, we have a FEW good R politicians in this state.
But you are absolutely wrong that D's do nothing to win on their own merit. Sure, there's some mudslinging but it's usually totally warranted, i.e. R's have done some bad stuff that Alaskans need to know about.
Johnny Ellis, Hollis French, Les Gara, Beth Kertulla, Kim Elton, David Guttenberg, Harry Crawford, former politicians Eric Croft, Fran Ulmer and Kay Brown, etc. -- all D's, all won elections on merit, all have done and continue doing great things for the state.
O yeah, and all not the LEAST BIT CORRUPT.
Maybe I am a little naive to think enough Alaskans have finally awakened to realize that Republican majorities in our legislature are ruining our state. But like I said, only time will tell -- not you. Thankfully.

Bush's mess??????? I suppose you are among those who think terrorism does not exist. Let me tell you, it certainly does. Bush will go down as one of the great Presidents in history because of his foresight. Without safety, we have nothing. I think the country is doing just fine. I have a military family who prays that Clinton does not get in office. I think the military are the experts on the war, not the news media nor you if you are referring to the war as Bush's mess. The only mess is the division in this country because the D's want to gain control and the biased media. The division makes us look weak to other countries. We do not need another Jimmy Carter!!!!!

The War is Bush's Mess
He started a war of choice to enrich his defense industry buddies, among other reasons. And Americans are less safe now then before the war.
Or are you saying the war isn't a mess?
I do think terrorism exists, but it is blown WAY out of proportion for political reasons by Bush and the NeoCons.
I'm in a Muslim country right now. And you know what? It's pretty safe. Amazingly safe. Safer than Anchorage with way less crime. I was in Syria last year. Our sworn enermies, right? Wrong. Nicest people I ever met. Even after they found out I was American. A very very small percentage of them are terrorists. One young woman asked me how they could communicate to Americans that they don't hate us and aren't terrorists. I told her all she could do was continue being incredibly nice to American visitors like me.
Terrorists are our enemies, but we need to carefully separate them from the vast majority of good Muslims. And invading Muslim countries is obviously not the answer.
And thanks I get my news from a variety of sources (thankfully not Fox News or CNN), including the right-leaning Drudge Report.
I do respect your families sacrifice for the war and pray for their safety. And for what it's worth, I don't want Clinton to win either (I'm hoping for Obama, Richardson, or Edwards.)
But we are way, way off topic. Why don't you just insult me one more time and then we can be done with it.

if the prom queen's hybrid PPT goes down in smoke, and AGIA doesn't produce a VIABLE contract before 2010, anyone can beat Palin. Poll numbers are like fair weather friends. And rumor has it that Palin is now down in the 60's -a 20 point drop in just a few months of doing absolutely nothing -aside from royally screwing up MatMaid.
Personally, I'd like to see Hollis French run against Uncle Ted. The Mayor is busy running the city, and his programs are increasing the quality of life for MUNI residents. Plus, it scares the disco out of me who will be elected the next Mayor.

Your disparaging comments notwithstanding, we elected Sarah because we trust her to stand for what's best for Alaska and no matter how you cut it Knowles proved himself totally spineless on issues from IFQ's to giving our resources away for temporary expediency's sake. We knew we would have gotten more of the same with much more at stake. By the way, don't get all smug presuming all Dems are going to walk away unscathed from this scandal biz, the statute of limitations have not run out for all actions, just most. Just ask your mayor's former best man, Bill Bobrick.
Take your mind off the petty back-biting and try to get it through your venom tainted Demo party insularity and look at the big picture of who is standing up for the future generations regardless of party affiliation. If you were thinking of what this place (Alaska, not just Anchorage) will look like in 25 years you'd probably stop licking your election wounds and start helping out.

Stags, you impress me. Hollis would be awesome! And if anyone could beat Ted, it would be him. He's not super well known, but once people get to know him, what's not to like? He's smart, reasonable, politically viable, and seemingly incorruptible.
I disagree with the former poster who suggested Ted could win from a jail cell -- those days are over. Aren't they? Even if he's just indicted, I'm going to go out on a limb and say he'll be vulnerable. (Waking up to the glorious sunshine of the new Alaskan political scene!)

David Dittman
You could say the same about Dittman.
His polls are about as useful as Cialis in Pete Kott's medicine cabinet.

Wow, that’s funny, cop-out, but funny.
In regard to Dittman’s accuracy (not that I really care because I think polls are pretty meaningless, especially in this State) his numbers the last few major elections have been very accurate.
Unlike Ivan Bore who called or generated numbers that showed:
Ulmer over Murkowski
Knowles over Lisa M.
Knowles over Palin
Where does Ivan conduct his research, Seattle?
Aaron, I’ve got an idea:
We should ask Ivan and Dittman both to conduct a poll in regard to your radio show ratings; now that’s one I know they could both get right.
