Are protest songs becoming more tame?

Today's protest songs are coming in bubbly packages, according to an article running on the cover of the Daily News Friday.

"They can be so hummable that people may mouth the words and never know they're dissing the president," the story reads.

Think John Mayer, Norah Jones and John Legend.

Ever found yourself singing along to Mayer's, "Waiting on the World to change" without thinking about the words?

These songs slip below the radar.

Here is a list of popular lyrics that you might have found yourself singing along to at one point.

The artists are making some powerful political statements behind there breathy, soothing exterior. The story mentions how even Pink's "Dear Mr. President" sounds like a campfire song.

The question is are protest songs becoming more tame or are the "in your face," angry ones just not heard on popular radio? Are there edgy anti-war songs? If so, why doesn't America hear them?

See politics and music collide in the flesh: Local reggae act Seeds of Blessing and socially-conscious rockers Wupt and Kickin Rocks will play Snow Goose Friday night in an effort to gather the signatures of 23, 831 Alaskan voters for the Alaskans for Clean Elections Initiative. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the event is free.

acclimated ignorance

Being in an unpopular war for this long, people seem to have grown accustom to the violence happening in the Middle East and to the grievances of our own mismanaged government. They ignore the news. I believe they get tired of hearing about the war, or about people "complaining" about the war. And in addition, most people are not saying/doing anything about it, even though they will tell you they have questions or complaints with how events have unfolded.

Thus, subtle and tame make it to air, while the more "in your face," angry songs are filtered out, whether it be by record labels, radio programmers, or artists themselves because they still think the message may be thought of as unpopular. Speak from the heart! Grow a pair! Stand up, take notice, and do something!

I'm glad the free event at the Snowgoose is happening tonight. I'll be there!
