I don't think we have to rely on this alcohol tax to drop the dramatic statistics. Our task is much more complex than that, I've been and alcoholic and I know that a higher cost wouldn't had ever stopped me from drinking. Rapid detox was the first solution for me, not higher taxes.

Well, it's hard to say what will the main effect be, but if that means that there will be people who prefer to quit drinking because they cannot afford it anymore, then I am very OK with that tax. Perhaps they will prefer to attend treatment instead.

I believe it was P.T. Barnum who once said "there is a fool born every minute!" Anyone who honestly believes that increasing taxes on alcohol is going to solve our public intox problem is a fool! This initiative is about more revenue for the Muni, and quite possibly more GRANT MONEY for self-serving organizations like MADD has become!

Kingdom of Anchorage

The Kingdom of Anchorage's activities seem to have an effect on the entire state. Problems there with street people & public inebriates result in more jail usage - but these people have no money to pay for these costs that the average working person has to if they are caught up in the system. I know I can't afford to live in jail at ninety dollars a day. In the old days, they were called hobos - those irresponsible wanderers who contribute nothing to society, but wracked up criminal activites by thier very life styles - the need to have 'good time' cash for drugs & alcohol. But it is becoming difficult to have compassion for those agencies and honorable members of society that are tasked with finding solutions to these problems. While looking for solutions, they sit in boardrooms, meetings and conferences being paid enough per diem and travel, not to mention a decent wage; to house and feed a small family for a year. The old Mental Health trust fund - being spent daily but with nothing to show for it. Get those wealthy companies & people to pay up their way over due taxes - then come back and talk to us about more taxes.

Exemption

What I want to know is, if they are going to place another tax on alcohol, will our politicians have to pay it while they swill away at bars, thinking up new, brilliant schemes for bilking the citizens of their hard earned money, or will they be exempt for their kind patronage? I don't even like to drink; let alone hang around bars and taverns; but it always bothers me that instead of trying to get to the root of the reasons for addictions, abuse, homelessness and joblessness; they simply find more ways to capitalize on the problems. I don't suppose for a minute they've contemplated that one of the biggest reasons for an increasingly dysfunctional society is a government that shows absolutely no concern for the people they're governing. The bottom line is always, here's the problem. How can we profit from it? Discovering there's an enormous amount of profit to be made from instituting laws that exact economic retribution for breaking them, their marriage with the court system has instilled a suppressive regime that reduces us all to numbers for increasing the financial gain of a select few; the few who are on top; the few who flagrantly flatter themselves as authorities; the few who retain their cushy positions as chairpeople, directors and custodians of the law. While two thirds of our legislature are under investigation for corruption, business as usual blithely continues its path of destruction into the affairs of the local people. We don't need stiffer penalties. We need better laws. We don't need more policing. We need police who are more concerned with real crime instead of petty infractions. We don't need any additional taxes. We need our taxes to work for us in creating a better society; a society that provides good schools, libraries, adequate housing for the poor, job opportunities and recreational facilities without costing everyone an arm and a leg. Take the money out of your pockets, law makers, and back into the hands of the people.

TAX TAX TAX

To all of you upset about having to pay more for your spirits.......................Time to join the ranks of the smokers. It is soooooooooooooo funny how the smokers get reamed, but when it comes to people whom partake in spirits, oh my goodness, the world is coming to an end.

Time to pony up, just like we smokers do, it is time for another group of "sin" partakers to flip the bill for some services. I do my part while partaking in the "sin" of smoking, therefore, it is time for another singled out group to take care of business. If you don't like it, then aviod the spirits. I myself am praying for the day that I can kick the smoking habit, guess it is time for others to stear away from the booze.

I am glad to see somebody else taking the reins to support the services that are sucked up by the over abusers. What gets me, is that they actaully allow a vote on the subject, where as we smokers get no say so whatsoaver, just pay the bill or get over it. That is the only choice we have. SO basically, quit howling, or quit drinkning.

Tax won't fix anything.

Putting a 10% tax on alcohol is not going to curb a drinking problem that an individual has. People that are addicted to drugs or alcohol do not care about cost, they will find the money and means to get what they need for the "fix" they are craving.
I think the tax is a bad idea. I don't go to bars much, but if it will cost even more, then I will stop going all together. Why should I pay more money to occasionally meet a few friends at the bar? I don't drink everyday so none of the tax money will go to anything that can help me. Also, people that are addicted to alcohol don't always want help.

Where's the MONEY?

When the last alcohol tax passed it was supposed to help fund many of the programs that are being referred to now and accomplish the very same things the “Allens” are regurgitating now.
Last year I had the opportunity to hear a couple of people that run some of these same programs talk about problems they were facing. I asked if they felt whether the funding to their programs and like-programs had increased or decreased since the last alcohol tax. With no hesitation, both commented that the funding was LESS. No surprise here to me. Perhaps if those that are supporting this initiative were to audit the current resources and demand what rightfully belongs to every community already, we might be farther ahead. The millions of dollars raised thru the last tax are simply padding other budgets. Sure, we all know that you can not earmark money in the "General Fund"- that was a key argument at the time. But, Lisa Murkowski was adamant that a specific percentage was to be allotted for alcohol related issues. It’s a shame that she never followed up on her “baby”. Now the claim is that we should trust this to happen this time? Where is the accountability for the last run around? Who, specifically, is in charge of administering those monies? Did the "AA Team" (Allen T and Allen B) ask for any of that money from those that already have it before proposing this initiative? I challenge the AAs and every other Alaska community to ask for their share of the millions already collected. Why are they coming back to me with their hands out? At least the panhandlers on the street corners aren't masking their intent. In my observation there are more panhandlers on more corners now than before the last tax. Hmmm, is it any coincidence now that a 6 pack of beer costs $7-$8? Now you imply that although I choose to drink responsibly, I owe everyone that has ever been negatively affected by alcohol some type of compensation. Sorry, I already gave! I challenge anyone that feels that they might have been spared some hardship suffered from an incident involving alcohol over the past few years to call Mr.s Allen (since they wish to be the champions of us citizens) and ask them what they did to make sure that the programs that were promised all these new tax dollars actually received them. The last tax, in effect, was for the vitims, law enforcement and people with alcohol issues. Maybe their hardships could have been prevented. I say the city or state owes them something-not me. Maybe law enforcement could have spent less time on transporting inebriates and more time tracking down criminals that robbed homes or broke into cars. If Mr. Bailey or whoever was the president of the local chapter of MADD at that time was so concerned with the situation why wasn’t some action taken to follow up on the last tax increase? Surely MADD applied for a grant. I would have if I were them. Maybe they got it and were happy to leave it at that. I guarantee that the heads of these programs were expecting and asking for more money. Who told them no? Who cut their budget requests? These are the people that need to be under the spotlight answering questions. If the Allens and their group of fellow "citizens" is so concerned about the welfare of their neighbors, then why haven't they gone after what is already owed? Maybe because (at least for Mr. Tesche) they realize that the finger might point close to home and to the rest of the assembly and those in Juneau. Get a clue-the General Fund owes Alaska some money for alcohol related issues. Mayor, go get it and build your work farm-I support it. But stop coming back to me and every other responsible consumer of alcohol for more money to be squandered. Mr.Mayor, you didn’t propose the initiative, but you say that an alcohol tax can help pay for the farm so you stand to bear some of the burden of defending it. As a matter of fact it is you that should probably be answering many of the questions regarding where the money owed all these programs and agencies is. Also, as a gray collar worker, I hardly think that I would have the access to, or ear of, Mr. Tesche or any other assembly person that an ex-prosecutor and former president of the local MADD chapter has. So, please don’t try and pass this off as a “citizen’s initiative” yet. Clean up your acts Allens, assembly, mayor. Go get these programs and law enforcement agencies the money they are owed, from those that owe it to them. They deserve it. Trust me, you don’t want to come to my door with your hands out and holes in your pockets. Buy some new pants! If you can’t afford them, I’ll go up and down my block and get you a good pair of Carharts. Alaska was built in Carharts. By the way, Mr. Tesche, you have assured your opponent 3 votes from my house in the next election and I certainly won’t consider you, Mr. Begich, to represent me in Washington. If you guys can’t get Anchorage what it is owed from our own state, how could you get Alaska what it is owed from a nation screaming for its share? I believe that every person in law enforcement, every person involved in any agency that should have benefited from the last tax increase and didn't, and anyone who has been negatively affeced by alcohol the last few years should consider very carefully who they elect next election. Don't let them ride the magic carpet of taxing alcohol like others in the recent past. You see where that has gotten us. Make them accountable for yesterday. I certainly would love to know what has been done with the additional funds generated since the last tax increase, but in the current political climate in Alaska, I take everything with a grain of salt-and as we all know salt is bad for us. Hey, maybe you can tax the salt we are all having to swallow, and since politics seems to be the major influence, you can tax yourselves.

Next tax after this one

will be on fast food. We need to do something about the obesity problem in this town also. I mean if you make it more expensive then folks won't buy it, then we will have less fat people, right? I said, after the smoking ban things just become easier and easier to ban or tax. It's never going to stop now. Dog poop! hahahaha

Nonsense

Although it's true this is by citizen initiative, the Mayor has come out strongly for it. He's just never met a tax he didn't like. We already have among the highest - if not THE highest - alcohol taxes in the country. A 10% increase in cost will not have the slightest impact on consumption by addicts. In fact, an unintended consequence might be to increase crime. Those that are addicted but don't have the extra 10%, may well steal the money necessary. Money doesn't stop addiction. This is simply another way that MADD is operating outside its basic mission statement.

Alcohol Tax

Whenever there's a problem, the quick answer seems to be "tax it". What's next, a tax on books to solve the literacy problem, a tax on condoms to solve the homeless child problem? Where does it end? In order for new programs to work, you must have willing participants. I don't see where a tax on alcohol is going to fix the problem.

1) At least you get to vote on the tax, unlike us smokers, who just have to "cough" up the dough and get no so say in the tax.
2) I think it is just fine to TAX the Alcohol, maybe some other people than the smokers can flip the bill for services.

Alcohol is like any other drug, when someone is an addict it does not matter how much it costs. The people that wander around drunk now will be the same ones that wander around drunk if a tax is imposed. There are already many programs available to help people try and beat their addiction, but most choose not to participate. What makes anyone think that this "honor farm" will be any different. If someone is not forced to go and complete a program, they won't. I don't think an alcohol tax will do anything, except waste more money on solutions that don't work. What will work? I don't know...

I have little respect for an organization like MADD. They have become a political and prohabition group. Putting more tax on alchohol (as if we don't pay enough taxes) to fund more socialistic programs is not going to solve the problem!

For the record - I don't drink alchohol on a regular basis. My viewpoint is based more on the principle of what this group tries to do rather than myself supporting drinking.

Could work the opposite

It may not deter crime, but in fact, could increase it. I'm not saying they would, but think about the fact the inebriates may start robbing people. I personally don't care if they do increase the tax on alcohol, just not sure it will cure the problem. So now everytime Anchorage has a problem it can't control, what are they going to do, raise taxes on it? Wow, so much for this waste of a "10-year homeless plan" the Mayor has.

Alcohol Tax

While I am all for ridding the streets of the inebriates, an alcohol tax isn't the way. Whether the assembly or city wants to admit it, those inebriates are going to continue to purchase alcohol regardless of how much they hike the cost up. Perhaps improving the laws on public intoxication to include better punishment would be a better idea. That way the only person paying for it in the end would be the one causing the problem, instead of the rest of the city.
