Today we begin a regular Q&A feature talking to tourists about their trip to Alaska. Our opening visitors are Reid, Cindy and Jared Osaki of Oahu, Hawaii.
Q: What have you been up to on your vacation?
Cindy: We've been to Seward. We went kayaking in Kenai Fjords – to Aialik Bay. Boy, that was beautiful.
Reid: We went fishing in Soldotna. We were on the Kenai River. We didn't catch anything; that was kind of disappointing.
Cindy: We went up to the Matanuska Glacier; that was pretty cool. We were hiking right on the glacier. This is the most outdoor-type vacation we've ever taken. Usually, we do city and urban things. This is very different for us. It's been fun.
Q: What would you say have been the highlights?
Cindy: We've seen lots of wildlife. We've already seen three of the big five. We saw Dall sheep right by the side of the road on our way to Seward. We saw moose five times on our trip to Matanuska. We saw a black bear in Aialik Bay. We haven't seen caribou yet. We might go back to the Matanuska area to the Reindeer Farm to see them. We didn't realize it was out there when we went.
Reid: We've been eating lots of reindeer sausages. We love those.
Q: What do you still want to see?
Cindy: We want to see Denali. It has been cloudy while we've been here. We were going to go flightseeing up at Talkeetna, but we called and they said it wasn't very good that day. We want to do a glacier landing. We're going to call again today and see what it's like.
Q: Why did you want to visit Alaska?
Cindy: We wanted to see nature and bears and glaciers. We had friends take the cruise, but we opted not to take a cruise. We're not really cruise people by nature. We want to get out and explore and see things. We want to be able to explore the area at our own pace. So far, we're having a wonderful time.
