An idea first mulled in the czarist era - a tunnel under the Bering Strait - is being revived as part of an ambitious project to build a 3,700 mile transport corridor linking Russia with Alaska. What are your thoughts?
Stupid idea, Oh yeah it would be good for our economy - Not. Our state has more money than the whole country of Russia. Sure lets run roads across all our pristine land And allow a direct route for an enemy army to invade. Oh yeah n korea russia china - Im sure they would be happy. I would be happy to see our Marines blast that thing back to the stone ages if they ever try it. Let them talk about whatever they want. It aint happening as far as im concerned. Imagine - The most beautiful route for terrorists ever. Woo HOooooooH! Dumb is the only word I can think of for this idea. Let them keep there crime ridden country to themselves. Sorry guys im not racist this is just terribly impractical.
Maybe George Koumal considers Russia to be "Mother Russia" but I sure don't. Just who do these idiots think is going to pay for this ridiculous tunnel? This is something Russia is already asking. Naturally they would want Alaska to pay for it and our politicians would more than likely do it, because you know there's something in this for them!
Wow Alaska will be flooded with Russian illegal immigrants as well as all kinds of illegals sneaking into Alaska. We'll become just like Texas with their problem of Mexican illegals. And, for heavens sake, WHY in the world even begin to think about trusting Russia for anything.
I live in Spring, Texas. It buts up against Houston. We have over 400,000 illegal immigrants in the greater Houston area. I am not sure if you are good with numbers but that is 2/3 the population of your state. I am quite sure we have more ILLEGAL immigrants in Texas than you have people in Alaska.
I currently work for AT&T and am trying to transfer to anyplace in your great state.
It was 81 degrees here today and it was kind of cool for this late in the year. I was cold when I woke up this morning. I laid up in bed an extra few minutes. When I went by the thermistat it was 66 degrees.
I will gladly give up my high temps to immigrate to the "land of the midnight sun". It might be a little rough the first few years but I am willing to take the chance.
I will work hard and pay my way and try to be as proud to be an Alsakan as I am a Texan.I did spend 8 Years in the Marines, so I think I can handle some hardship.
Jimmy, all those immigrants that landed in your town sure left things out of balance for you. We old Alaskans up here have suffered just about the all the American immigrants we can stand for this lifetime, so please don't come.

Need I say more. Jimmy thanks for the kind words about our state, and this guy doesnt represent the majority. I was born and raised here. Please come up and enjoy our beautiful state. I was born and raised here and I love to hear your wishes to move here. Hopefully Bill Erickson moves out of state:)
It would be easier for an illegal immigrant to reach the U. S. from Hong Kong. The only way to make the trip would be in a freight container. Probably freeze to death trying. Traveling hundreds of miles over tundra is difficult and hazardous for an experienced and well equipped Eskimo. Even the four mile trip from Little Diomede to Big Diomete islands can only be done in the summer by highly skilled people. In the winter the ocean is just a big pile of big chunks of ice.
There should be absolutely no concern about illegal immigration.
Four or five of the comments posted are so sarcastic that it's not worth arguing their points.
I just wanted to add my view (so this thread isn't as lopsided) that this would be one of the coolest projects of our lifetimes.
There's an interesting Discovery Channel Extreme Engineering episode that covers the technological achievements that now make it possible to bridge the Bering Strait (dealing with the ice floes is a huge challenge), and while I think a bridge would be a very cool architectural landmark, any crossing of the Bering Strait is bound to revolutionize world transportation and trade. I say, go for it!
Revolutionize world transportation or expoit and damage an ecosystem already struggling with environmental challenges without the added pressure of increased air pollution and loss of habitat? Alaska's infrastructure is still in the developing stages, lets not strain our resources (financial and environmental) trying to support a one lane highway to another "bridge to nowhere". Spend the money on education, community projects and social programs we really need.
Does this mean a US invasion of Russia is imminent to expedite the transfer of natural resource ownership? (Reference: US imperialism in most of the world)
Sorry for the pessimism, but are we going to send try to send over 'democracy' again? I bet any initial plans will be able to accomodate something, say the size of a tank....
I am living in Ukraine right now and if anyone thinks that getting into any deal with Russia and Gasprom is wise, look what they did to Ukraine last year and Belarus this year. Putin shut the gas off at the absolutely coldest time of the year, knowing full well people could and would die. Many did, and he did the same thing with Belarus. Stay away from this deal no matter what.
and is there going to be border patrol here that is allowed to stop all illegals immingrants? or will there be a new breed of illegal immigrants?
A tunnel so it can generate heat to melt the Strait - hmm...less ice for the polar bears and humans changing the environment again.
And let's see...aren't there a lot of earthquakes around the Northern Pacific Rim...what if the tunnel is damaged from a quake - how many die, how long does it get closed? Like the pipeline, now you've got a crisis.
Who's thinking this one through - oh yeah, the politicians. Bad idea!
Yes those who are so concerned about global warming are not giving a thought about things such as less ice for the polar bears. My, my, how global warming is pushed aside when big bucks are involved. Wonder how much the politicians who are pushing this will be rewarded?
I don't think I could have said it any better myself! That's right, forget global warming and them polarbears, we have some stupid "continent connector" to build!!!
This tunnel will make possible passenger and freight rail traffic from London to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Alaska will be the rail center to divert traffic to various destinations. A study is underway by the Alaskan and Canadian authorities as to the best route for a rail line to the lower 48. The Darien Gap needs to be addressed. There is a 40 mile gap in rail lines and roads from Panama to Colombia which needs to be addressed to make possible your trip by rail to Mardi Gras at Sao Paulo, Brazil. Trade between the Americas and Europe will greatly increase due to the cheaper rail shipping charges. Very exciting project which I have been hoping for for a long time.
Great idea,Progressive thinking looking forward into our future. We can use the natural resources of Russia here in America. natural gas, oil, coal, and a rail system between the countries would be a great way to ship commodities as well.as long as "IVAN" pays for it all, I'M all for it.It would be a great idea to have a self destruct system in place as well in case the pesky chinese want to use it to move troops into alaska we could implode it when it is full of communists. hmmm. again a great idea. progress is coming to Alaska 1 nail at a time.
Once we have the tunnel in place, then all the goods we get by Russia (nothing) can now come by rail and will be easily accessed at Wales, where it will only cost a kajillion dollars to get them to population centers.
Russia needs infrastructure repairs not railroads to nowhere. They also have a TB epidemic. This is the most unsustainable project I have ever heard of. They need to invest their money in the energy systems that come after oil and gas, before all the oil, gas and money are gone. Just like Alaska.
Just WHY do we need a tunnel linking Alaska to Russia? Oh I know, this way they can use the PFD funds. Don Young already wants to dip into the fund; they need it for schools and who knows what else. As far as the schools, just WHY is it every working Alaskan is supposed to support schools to such an extreme measure. No one told these people to go out and have all these children. I THINK THE PFD MONEY FROM KIDS IN SCHOOL SHOULD BE DONATED TO THE SCHOOLS. We don't need a tunnel, another ridiculous waste of money!
Yet another idea that reveals a lot about people and their misconceptions and very little about the problem it's intended to address.
We are, no doubt, on the verge of great technological transformations that make this project possible, but the transformations themselves will make this project un-necessary. An example we should keep in mind is that during the early 20th century every city with a future was building transportation hubs for coal fired locomotives right in their downtown central business districts. Wouldn't a careful study of emerging technology back then have told planners with an informed vision of the future that steam locomotives would, within 50 years, be obsolete; replaced with paved roads and airports for oil powered trucks and airplanes and personal cars, and the temples to transportation would be empty hulks filled with society's outcasts. Let's push instead for a future of abundant, economical, non-radioactive fusion power for humanity's next big step: space.
I think that if the the "Global Warming" nuts are actually accurate, the need for a tunnel will be past before it could be opened. The ice pack that lies in the Straits would have been melted and ships and barges would be used to carry goods across.
