DISCUSS: Army tours extended

Beginning immediately, all active-duty Army soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan will serve 15-month tours - three months longer than the usual standard, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday.

What is your reaction to this? Please maintain respect for the troops and their families.

Same old lies

from this administration. I think Bush and his "group" are criminals and just one of their many lies was getting the people whipped up with enough fear to support going into Iraq.

I fully support our troops! I would like them all home today or tomorrow.

Bush somehow convinced many good people to believe that any person that disagrees with him is "against the troops" or "wants the terrorist to win". What garbage! He is truely evil and history will surely show it.

Quite a Shame ...

Yes it is quite a shame that the Army is having to extend the Active Duty tours to 15 months on with 12 months off. It's a shame that the DOD is making it so that National Guard / Reserve troops now serve a full year and can go back for more (most Guard & Reserve units were "capped" on their Iraqi deployment status).

It's a shame that they're putting the weight of this on the Army alone. None of the other branches are staying any longer ... I guess they figure the Army is used to it.

What's more of a shame, however, is that we're having to do this at all. There are other actions that the Department of Defense could take to alleviate the stresses it's feeling at the moment. Just a for-example: Move our troops into a border securing policy, cordoning Iraq off from the rest of the world and letting them have their civil war without any outside interference (U.S., Iranian, or Otherwise) and using our diplomatic and political powers with whomever comes out on top. Such an action would take a lot less troops than we have there now, so we could actually bring some of them home and get them properly trained and equipped to do their job.

Or - and a far less popular set of options - we could do a massive IRR call up; fully activate the Guard and Reserves indefinitely; or even enact the Draft to stand up a couple more Brigades or even Divisions that would provide the numbers our "leaders" say we are going to need, without having to extend tours.

Look, I'm all for helping the Iraqis get their freedom, but I believe we've done what we can do with what we have and to continue on the course we are now is just going to grind our military down and destroy this generation's best patriots.

We haven't been fighting this war the right way from the beginning, putting more of our guys there for longer periods of time to just do the same thing isn't going to help our situation there either.

It's high time the Iraqis started fighting for their OWN country, and high time we quit fearing the influence of braggart nations in the region. It's not our back yard. Let them do what they want. Bring our guys home, train them (properly), equip them (properly) and make sure they're still here and willing to fight when we need them to defend our own country.

I know first hand what an extension feels like. It sucks, wehther you're expecting it or not. And it's not just the troops that are paying the price.

Extension

My younger brother (Marines) served his tour (6 months) over there, my son (Air Force) served his tour, and now I have another family member (Paratrooper from Ft Richardson) there in harms way for 15 months when the 6th month period was heartwrenching enough.

I dont believe for those who have never had to hug your child or family member that last time before they got on the plane to go there, or held their breath and prayed on a constant basis for their safety and for strength to endure while they were there really can understand what it feels like to have a loved one there in harms way. To know real fear every time the phone rings when your not expecting a call, or worse yet a knock on the door with military uniforms on the other side can really comprehend what the ones left here feel. To anyone else I dont believe they can truly understand how severe this can be. The heartbreaking thought of having to live life (a part life) without them in it. We're not just talking about those who have sacrificed their lives, but their limbs and mental or emotional disorder caused by surviving the IED's and the conditions they face there on a daily basis, having to take the life of another, or even something simple as missed family time (holidays and birthdays). Individual lives and real families that are forever impacted because of this war.

What have we accomplished being there all this time? Can we truly bring 'freedom' to a area where they have no concept of what true freedom is? Or is this claim of giving them freedom a smoke and mirror's ploy where oil is the main reason and in that case, how many gallons of oil is a human life worth? The sad part is that none of them really want us over there. I believe this is their fight for freedom, not ours. We've already had our own battles and crosses to bear, and they claim this to be a holy war as if God (any God by any definition) would condone that. I think if we wish to bring them a Constitution & Declaration of Independence maybe we should give them ours. Evidently we're not using them!

I say if we are afraid of the terrorism coming to our soils, bring them home NOW and let them guard our borders where we can stand with them. Let them see how strong America REALLY IS! That our true strength is with those that we love (Regardless of Race, Religion or Creed).

In case my words do not reflect it, I do very much support our troops, and my heart goes out to all who have loved ones in harms way. May God protect them all and bring them ALL home safely, may he give strength the wives and families who have loved ones who serving there. May God comfort those who have lost loved ones and help them find peace.

Extented

The wife that spoke about not knowing there was going to be an extension was in denial. Many Brigades had put out a warning that this day might be coming. Better to know now than like the 173rd Stryker families. None of us like it and especially after hearing a story much like my own. We did Afghanastan 2003, that got extended 2 months, had a daughter born, so he missed that. Then he left for Korea, with another child born, then to Fort Richardson for another tour to Iraq, with another extension. We can't sit and complain, but we can help support eachother. My children are both under four and their daddy has been gone for almost their entire lives so far. We must have faith in God that he will protect our loved ones and give us strength to fight this together as a supportive military family. God Bless Our Troops!

extentions

I think we all knew this day was coming, but to have it official is still devastating. I talked to my husband last night who is currently deployed to Iraq and the depression and sadness was seeping through the phone. I tried everything imaginable to cheer him to no avail. All he kept saying was that his daughter had just turned one when he left and she will be 2 1/2 before he sees her again. I just wish the Army could offer the troops some hope. I really wished they would have said that all troops being extended will get an extra 2 weeks R&R. My husband would have taken the news much better if you told him he could come home for 2 additional weeks. I think they should keep there monetary compensation and allow them all to have additional R&R. I am telling you the morale there is low and they need something to lift their spirits. They are not focused on their mission and for all of us who have loved ones over there, we know that is dangerous. Please give them something. They deserve it.

Amen to that. Only the

Amen to that. Only the military & their families understand how absolutely hard this is. If the morale is low how in the world can they take care of what they have to do?
We need to pray always for the LORD to handle this & work it out.
He can if its his will.
GOD BLESS all you families waiting & you troops wanting to be home.
Just remember "this to shall pass"

Army tours extended

As parents of a soldier stationed at Fort Richardson currently serving in Iraq we watched this issue unfold. Of course we hoped our son would be home on time but we expected this extension. While it is difficult for us it is, of course, much harder on the Army's young soldiers' families. We just hope for the best at this point. We appreciate Anchorage's hospitality to the military and their families and hope the city doesn't get too worn down by all this depressing news.
