Discuss: Quality of health care for veterans

The quality of health care for the military and its veterans nationwide is under attack.

We want to hear from current service people and their loved ones and from and recently discharged or long-time veterans.

Discuss the quality of care you are getting or have gotten, either in Alaska or Outside.

In 1981, Ed Hardy and his

In 1981, Ed Hardy and his wife formed Hardy Marks Publications. In 2004, Christian Bale licensed the rights to produce the high-end Ed Hardy UK line, which is based on Hardy's imagery. Prior to the Ed Hardy Clothing line, Bale was the Head Designer at Von Dutch Originals, which marketed the imagery of Kenny Howard. Don Ed Hardy, commented, As demand for my artwork continues to skyrocket, I felt it was Ed Hardy Clothes time to take on a partner that could help me manage the demand and opportunities for the Ed Hardy T-shirts name. Iconix is at the forefront of brand management and clearly has the capabilities to dramatically grow the Ed Hardy UK business. I'm thrilled to have them as a partner. Cheap Ed Hardy are located in everywhere. We also believe that by owning the brand alongside Ed Hardy Clothing, the founder, there will be opportunities to further leverage his iconic name along with his new artwork. Largest selection of Ed Hardy T-Shirts and Ed Hardy here.

one more thing...

...after reading some of the comments here about poor care at the VA, I hope people realize this can and does happen at any facility. My daughter fell on her wrist and snapped a bone in her hand in two. The doctor at Alaska Regional in Anchorage took x-rays, but unbeknownst to me at the time , she x-rayed only the thumb because that is what my 10 yr old daughter said hurt, and the entire back of her hand was a large blue bump! I kicked myself many times for not asking to see those x-rays. When the pain did not subside, I took her to a hand doctor in Anchorage, who was appalled, as was I when I saw the x-ray he took. Anyone could easily see the bone snapped in half. Fortunately, she healed well. Doctors in the country all have to meet the same basic standards of education and performance no matter where they work. As patients, we have to look out for ourselves and educate ourselves at least a little. We also have to double check all prescriptions. Whenever I get a new drug, I do an Internet search so I can see a picture of the tablet or pill and make sure it's the correct med. VA or not, we all have to be careful.

Quality care

The care I received at the VA facility in Anchorage was top notch. I base my assessment on my years of working in civilian hospitals and as a paramedic. Now I receive my care in my new city of Lexington, KY (I'm so homesick though!). Lexington facility provides the same great care. Not too long ago there was a segment on national TV news about the VA being ahead of mainstream medical care in many ways. The computer system used by the VA was one of the things highlighted. I like it that when I go to any provider, he or she can access all my records, enter notes, ask for tests and appointments for me, and see all my labs etc. I also always get my prescriptions by mail in a timely manner as scheduled, as well as my letters of appointments scheduled and test results. The Lexington facility is on the campus of the University of Kentucky, and many of the doctors and surgeons practice at both the VA and UK Medical Center. I've had two surgeries in the last two years here, and my post op care was exceptional. Although I only visit a few times a year, I am very happy with all my care.

VA health care

My experiences with the VA Medical Center in Anchorage, AK have been outstanding for the most part. Only once or twice in the past few years have there been minor prescription mixups.

VA Still Has Good People

Some years ago, I used the VA facility in Loma Linda, California. I received overall good care and left positive about the VA. However, things do change and each facility is different.

My recent experience with the VA branch in Kenai has been very positive. That comes from dealing with the people who run the place caring about the veterans who come in and performing their jobs well.

Having said all that, I have yet to see a doctor there. When I finally get to see one, I still feel optimistic that my experience will be positive.

However, when I read and hear about the serious problems others have with the VA, I am concerned. VA has the potential to be one of the best medical care facilities in the country. When it falls short, I, as others, blame funding and committment from the federal government. Today, as others have mentioned, that especially means your President is personally responsible for not making sure VA has the funding and quality staffing needed.

Alaska does need more VA branches in the state. It is still too far to commute to get care for many of us.

I have had good experiences. I have met many good people working there. But, I'm very concerned about the failings and lack of committment to veterans by the government. We need to bring what should be a good system back to what it really can be.

I would also like to see some of the military-trained PA's and other trained professionals used fully in VA facilities without making them jump through hoops just because they are not working in a strictly military setting. I feel we're losing added care by screening out quality people with unnecessary state requirements or fund-raising efforts by the universities by requiring unneeded coursework perhaps to keep their professors working or because legislators are being misled by the health care lobbyists and don't have the background or guts to say no to them.

Old Back and Treatment for Vets

I travel between arizona and alaska..as a retired vet and sufferer of degenerative disk disease, I receive outstanding spinal decompression therapy in Phoenix from an outfit that referred me to a solid practice with outstanding coverage for vets here locally.

I am very pleased with the medical facilities and treatment that my wife and I get in both states.

Thank you

Co-pays

I signed up for medical care thru the VA in in the latter part of 2006. I recently received a packet from the VA wanting information relating to my income. It seems that the VA is going to base my co-pay on my income from 2005. I lost my job in 2005 and during the entire year of 2006 I made about 2/3 less than my income from 2005. I called the VA and asked why they were basing this on my income from 2005 and not 2006 they told me that federal law required they use the figures from the year prior to enrollment. So, because I didn't wait for a month and enter the VA medical system in 2007 I now have higher co-pays because they are basing it on a higher income. According to the financial counselor I have no options and no avenue for appealling this. I understand that my co-pay is still lower than it would be if I was covered with a health insurance carrier but I can't afford that either so I guess I am stuck with the current co-pay.

VA health care in West L.A,

My experience, over the years, with the West Los Angeles VA hospital has been less than satisfactory. I have received poor services due to incompetence (errors) and a staff whose members personally don't care about the quality of care they administer.
It is frightening at times, knowing that if my health condition was dire I might be subjecting myself to a life or death situation due to the care I receive. This is probably common with many VA hospitals around the country. I recommend that if at all possible a VA patient should remove oneself from the VA health care system and move to a private health care system just to ascertain that a high quality of care is received

VA medical care in Alaska needs improvement

I fell on the ice and dislocated my shoulder and broke bones in the shoulder area. I went to Elmendorf Emergency. The doctor that saw me told me to go home and put ice on it as I had bruised the bicep muscle. He never ordered any X-rays or other tests to see what was really wrong. Several days later I returned in pain with bruises the length of my arm and across my chest. The new doctor asked what did the X-rays show? He was appalled to think that an emergency room doctor would not order an X-ray for an obvious trauma case. I still have problems with my shoulder after two surgeries to remove bone fragments and repair a torn rotator cuff. Maybe being correctly diagnosed in the beginning would have helped get proper medical care.

  18     March 21, 2007 - 3:20pm | barbara_keene

Poor Care at Elmendorf Hospital

I was given inadequate and improper medical treatment at Elmendorf Air Force Base Hospital when the VA doctor who was covering in Emergency treated my injury inadequately. I broke both the ulna and radius in my left arm and wrist. The VA doctor set my arm in a short arm cast which did not hold the bones in place.

Five weeks after severely breaking my arm, the VA doctor removed the cast. I asked if he was going to take an x-ray of the arm, and he responded that “It was not necessary as all bones heal in five weeks”.

The bones did not come together properly and five weeks was too short a time for complete healing. I was told by four other orthopedics surgeons that the bones should have been pinned and plated or at the very least a long arm cast used to hold the bones together until they had healed.

Throughout this ordeal, I begged the Orthopedic staff to help me as I was in horrible pain, but they refused to make appointments for me, refused to obtain a consult to a specialist and canceled and rescheduled my appointments several times. It took 11 weeks to see the hand specialist who then told me “It is too late to correct the mal-union as the bones have healed in a crooked manner.”

My arm is now deformed and I continue to experience pain and stiffness in the wrist. I have limited use of my hand. My left arm is nearly 1 inch shorter than the right arm, due to the mal-union as bones slipped past each other and healed in the wrong position.

Health Care for retired veterans

I am a Viet Nam Vet. I served two and one half years in RVN. I get fairly good care for my service connected health issues from the VA. I will say that I have never had a bad experince with the medical care I get from the VA. On the other hand, I was proud to serve 21 years in the US Army. From my first enlistment in 1959 we where promissed full medical, dental, and vision at any military hospital after a 20 year career. They did change that to until 65 and eligible for Mecicare. None of this service has been provided. If I need dental care I have to pay for it out of pocket. If I could not get some care from the VA I would have no health care at all? The biggest problem with the VA is that it is under funded. That is the FAULT of the President.

V A lack of care

Hello, I'm a veteran of Desert Sheild/Desert Storm. I had a problem with my foot and went to the va hospital in anchorage in 1992 and 1993. I had a sore on my foot that made walking difficult and the docters at the va hospital took one look and said nothings wrong. No samples were taken, no questions were asked.I insisted that samples be taken and look at in the lab. Then i was told that I have foot fungus of some sort and they can't do anything for me. I still have problems now and then and refuse to go to the va. More so with a piss poor and above the law president that that we have.

VA HEALTH NOT CARE

Just the facts ma'am.. just the facts.

DENY & DELAY IS THE VA WAY! A GOOD PLACE FOR DYING BUT NOT FOR LIVING! YOU CAN GET AN ASPIRIN BUT DON'T EXPECT TO GET WHAT YOU NEED. IF ANY QUESTIONS, READ THE VA BILL OF PATIENT NO RIGHTS.

VA Care

Yes I agree with lot of the other comments here. I also am a Vet and was in Vietnam. I have over 30 year working for the gov't. And for the last 5 of them years I am working with the VA in Reno Nv. We have about 28 Vets that come down here to Reno to see doctors or to get treatment that are from Alaska. After this mess in in Wash. CNN had a special on and they stated that the Reno VA is the best in the nation. We handle over 1500 vets that come into the hospital each day that have appointments or need to see a doctor. Before I started to work here I came here once and this VA saved my life cause of heart problems and asked if I wanted my health care to come here and I did.
I know that there are some that feel that the VA that they go to is the best and that is great and there are some that think it is a pain or that they would be getting better care outside of the VA, then I ask you how can you make it better, don't just sit there write go to meetings and make the changes. You got more say then you think you do. I do feel that ALL of the VA hospitals are funded better and it should be able to hire the best doctors and rn's that is out there. And if that means making funds to put up another station someplace closer to where they are more vets then do it. Also the last report that we got here was that the VA system is in the top 5 in the nation for health care to our brothers and sisters. And those who don't think it is that good all I can say is please do some checking on reports and findings and you'll be surprised. Or help others do something to help it better just don't sit there. Thank you for taking your time and reading this..

VA Health Care

I am a viet nam era vet who is in the VA system here in Alaska. I have always been treated great, all my health issues from cataract surgery to a broken leg heve been have been met in a professional and caring manner. You won't hear a bad word from me about the overworked folks at the VAMC in Anchorage.

  12     March 19, 2007 - 8:40am | gjinak

Health care

I can only comment on the health care recieved from the VA here in Alaska, as I have not dealt with them outside the state of Alaska. I can honestly say that within the first two years in the VA system, I recieved more quality care than I did in almost 22 years of active duty. Within three months of retirement I couldn't pass the eye test to get my drivers license renewed. Within four months the VA had secured the needed cataract surgeries to correct my vision. At every turn the VA has been there for me. The people at the Anchorage VA center are head and shoulders above ANY medical facility I have ever visited, bar none. Every single person I've dealt with, no matter the reason, has been polite, helpful and extremley competent. My primary care providers, I've had two in fifteen years, are people I would trust my life to without hesitation. All of the clinics I've visited regularly are not only staffed with absolutley the best quality technicians, but they are also people who genuinley care about your health and well being. I can only give a heartfelt "thank you" for your time and services. Guess everyone has a gripe, so here is mine. In all this time, there has been a couple of times I've had to drive around a couple of times to find a parking spot. Fix that and it will be absolutely perfect, for me.

Hit And Miss

As a former long time Alaska resident, soon to return, I am reading horror accounts of V.A. care here that are equal to and similar to ones at V.A. facilities elsewhere. An example: I have a 50% disability. I was receiving care for over two years at a new primary care clinic in Bremerton, WA. Everything went well until my wonderful care provider decided he wanted to move on. When I showed up for my next scheduled appointment with him (I was notified the appointment had been cancelled}. I was informed that he was gone and there was on one available yet to take his place. I was told I would be put on a waiting list and called when a new health care provider had been hired and an appointment was available. I waited 6 months with no word. I finally walked into the clinic and demanded to be seen for my medical problem that was becoming critical. At that time I was told that a temporary physician was hired and I would be called for an appointment as soon as possible. Several weeks later I was contacted and given an appointment for the following month. That doctor who saw me had all my medical information in the V.A. system available to him, he spent most of the short office visit rambling on about something non related to my condition. When I mentioned to him that my previous provider was planning for me to see a specialist at the Seattle VA he briefly reviewed my record and said he would be sure to schedule that appointment for me. (He appeard to NOT know how to operate the V.A. computer entry system). I knew it would take several weeks before I would hear from Seattle with an appointment time. However, I waited another 6 months. I returned to the Bremerton clinic to follow up on the "supposedly scheduled appointment." The front office person said she saw no Seattle appointment scheduled for me, I explained my situation and she said she would see to it that the clinic managing doctor would review and schedule it. Several weeks later I recieved a letter from another physician at the Bremerton clinic asking me to come in to discuss that medical situation. However, someone, somewhere in the vast V.A. system erroneuosly changed my Bremerton, WA address to some unknown address in Oregon. By the time this misdirected Oregon letter was found and forwarded to me (resulting from my own investigation)I called to make an appointment and was told that the physician who made the request was gone as his 30 day contract was complete, so my appointment was no longer available. During this period, all my critical medications also were mailed to the same erroneous address in Portland. It became necessary for me to drive to the Urgent Care at the American Lake Hospital in Tacoma in order to have my address corrected and to receive meds that day from the pharmacy. As an example of ineptitude: When I spoke earlier by phone to a pharmacist at the American Lake pharmacy about the address error he over and over again insisted to me that I didn't live in Bremerton, WA, but that "I did live in Oregon and if there is an address problem I need to put in a change of address form with the Post Office." Here,s the final chapter: I now have another appointment in Bremerton scheduled for later this month. It was obtained by the doctor at the American Lake Urgen Care I saw about my meds. He spent well over 1 hour on the phone attempting to make this appointment for me and was totally "incredulous" on how the system works or doesn't work. It has been 14 months since my original (caring) health care provider departed and i am still waiting to be seen for the original problem I saw him for way back then. Stay tuned for more. And remember, we vets need to be on top of our congressmen/women insisting we get the treatment we are entitled to and deserve. Dan

CARE? WHAT CARE?

There is not a lot positive I have to say about the Anchorage VA clinic. It is true that some care is better than none, or so I thought. Some care is what happened to me with this system. I have to live with chronic pain due to a serious back injury while on active duty. A doctor I had some years ago at the VA ordered me to go to a contract "pain" specialist. I say ordered because if one decides not to go to an otherwise setup appointment the VA will drop you like a hot rock. A vet must make all and any appointments given to them or loose any currency in the system. So I went. This contract doctor was a pill pusher and soon had me physically dependant on opiates for pain relief. After two years of seeing him the VA pulled the rug out and quit paying for appointments to this doctor because, wait for it, he was illegally prescribing opiates! My VA doctor at first refused to supply the opiates and I went through withdrawal, something I would wish on no one. Six years laterr and I am still battling the VA for my monthly opiates, a drug they started me on. Every month I have to worry about withdrawal again because some clerk decides I have had enough. The details are something I don't want to go into here but suffice it to say that the VA is a rough organization to rely on. They even forgot my last six month appointment and when I called in to ask about it was scolded for not calling to tell them their job. Incredible.
The VA is something of a guesswork operation. Sometimes it seems okay and most of the time it is a place to raise the frustration level of even the most genial person.
It is too bad that we have an administration running this stuff that cares not one whit about the veteran. This is not surprising I guess when one considers the so called pResident is still awol and now a deserter. He can't stand to take care of those who really did the job and didn't run. What is it, 10 biliion a month in Iraq? Man what that money would do for the VA.

Thoughts on the VA health care system

Medical care for the most part anywhere in the community is engineered first for money, avoid patient liability, provide testing, ignore patient comments, and get them out the door. Next! That'll be $126.00 to $225.00 for 20 mimutes of robotic physician behavior. Nothing more defines this behavior then the story at the end of this article.

So let's talk about the Anchorage VA. Initially I started seeing a VA physician in 2005. The initial process went extremely well. Everyone was helpful and considerate.
I was referred by my VA provider to a "contract" in house Urologist who behaved much like a nerd lost in a shoe store looking for his feet. He was obnoxious and arrogant and immpatient. Close the door he demanded! What are you waiting for he said, let's drop 'em. Hmmmn, "you are a prime candidate for a biopsy" he happily shouted. Next! I literally ran out of the door faster then he ran in the door. Next he announced! As I was doing paperwork at the desk a man came out of his office deeply sad with tears in his eyes. The experience with this academic nerd scared me so much I decided to do my own research. I checked out the DaVinci robot prostate machine, talked to the Physician who operates it and found with other research the good old method was preferred by some Urologists. I later found that the "Contract" Physician was tied to the DaVinci procedure.

I paid to see a "Community Urologist" for a second opinion who put me on antibiotics for BPH (prostate swelling) and in 60 days of rigorous medication dropped my psi 2 full points to base level.

The thing I liked about the community doctor was he listened and gave me intellectual comfort. He helped settle my fears of cancer. He helped me help myself by answering my questions with answers, not rhetoric. This fine Doctor moved the next year and I miss him.

The VA providers are definitely over booked and they attempt to listen but in essence they cannot because it is impossible to complete a viable question and answer sequence in the 20-25 minutes alloted and treat the patient effectively so the patient leaves the office basically as vacant as when we arrived.

What I find missing is the same thing we all miss and rarely experience when we see a physician...intellectual comfort, that discussion that calms our inner fears of What is it Doctor? Having a physician move us robotically thru an office meeting without engaging in a active conversation is wasteful. Physicians can learn alot about a patient's condition by listening to the patient's experiences. Trouble is, it is almost impossible for the VA Physician because he is strapped for time so he goes to the 'follow up technique" to achieve efficiency so he can get on to the next patient.

There is a lot of accuracy and input lost between the Triad nurse and the physician. Nurses are trained for this and that and should be trained to receive input and transmit it accurately and most times it is not. They are taught to listen to the Physician and to follow procedure. To question the wrong nurse is to cause antipathy with her and if you do you are in deep kimche. Kinda like the fastest way to a man's heart...thru his chest with a sharp knife. Overwork cause's these nurses in some cases to stifle conversation and they become abrupt and annoyed with us. That creates a disconnect between the patient and the VA. Once I had "the" nurse tell me "My retirement and my job come first before you, Sorry! I wrote a complaint to that one.

On the other hand I had a great experience with a VA contract Opthomologist who treated and removed my cataracts and he was the essence of what I thought a physician should be. He was engaging if I asked a question and he was professional to a fault and his artistry with cataracts was flawless. His contract expired and he is gone.

What I have noticed at the VA is that the VA because of it's great follow up program cause's without knowing a medical dependency for the patient. Guess that is the cost of persistance but a medical dependency...that is, a reminder for follow up care for existing conditions and testing develop time over time, year over year and if we are not careful this follow up time cause's us to pre-occupy ourselves with medical thoughts and time-frame thinking and there is a tendency for us to think health all the time and this may interfere in our daily plans for everyday life. Oh, oh, I see I have another appointment in 2 weeks and then another in 3 weeks and another in 4 months and before you know it the entire summer is planned around the appointments. VA does a great job with follow up's and it is important for the veteran to be careful he doesn't live his life around appointments. True our health issues become acute later in life and so we become more aware of the importance of our health and the VA reminds us of the importance of our health but we need to understand that unless we have an acute condition, we probably need to get on with our lives and accept certain conditions as a part of aging...not needing to tie up our remaining lives being too over-reactive with our health fears. We need to put our health care into perspective and get on with our lives while maintaining our health.

I rate the health care at the Anchorage VA an 8 on a scale of 10 with 10 being the highest score.

I rate Elemendorf ER and health facility a 9. The care I have had at Elmendorf has been efficient, professional and caring. Everything I asked for they gave me. I was seen within 15 minutes on 4 separate ER occasions for an automobile accident I had. I had an MRI done and the female technician was superb in her patience. I developed a condition called BPPV a serious Vertigo (dizzyness) problem and could not lay down without passing out and this technician helped me on 10 tries to get into position. Her supervisor thought I was afraid of closed spaces, but she understood. That was so important to me then. I was impressed when I called for a CD for my MRI and X-RAY's and another technician at the desk had everything ready for pickup when she said they would be ready. I was impressed and told her so. I love going to Elmendorf. It is clean, structured, and the care and concern for a veteran is superb.

My experience in the community for my Vertigo was abdominal. I was treated for a hearing loss and the Vertigo was ignored. Finally, I stopped the testing after 4 months which the physician seemed to thrive on and he suggested I evaluate myself when I countered and refused to take his last testing and it caused him to refer me to a Neurologist. Something he should have done on my first appointment. Folks, we are left to our own devices to survive these medical nightmares but truly, compared to the community, the VA health care I have received is way above what I have experienced thruout the U.S. and I feel lucky to be a Veteran for that very reason. I can be reached at AKLARRO @aol.com for comments or questions.

VA Health care

I am a Viet Nam-era veteran; my late husband was a disabled veteran. We both used the VA system for a number of years. Initially, it was in very sad shape, but the last few years it has seen improvements in patient care and timeliness for appointments, etc. The providers here are excellent and provide very good care. Some of the specialists who are on contract are hard to deal with, although they have told me that the VA limits their patient appointments to 15 minutes per patient. That is absurd. In some cases, the VA health care is very good; in some cases, not so good. It's a huge system, and it is over-whelmed by the number of veterans using it. It will take lots of money to fix it. Bottom line: It won't be fixed any time soon. I always had the feeling that the VA was waiting for all of us Vietnam-era vets to die, so that they could shrink the system. My prediction is that things will get worse before they get better.

Indifference

The VA care in Alaska is declining rapidly because of indifference of senior management. This is risking the health and welfare of our veterans and their families and community. If you don’t believe me just go down to the VA on Debarr and look around. Or better yet try and call in to get an appointment to see a provider.

They call it “open access.” This is the government’s newest dog and pony show. It keeps patients from seeing their providers unless they can get past the triage nurse. Or unless it is your 6 month appointment or you’re close to death or threatening to kill yourselves can you get past the “open access” barriers. Patients have to wait months to get in to see their providers after their initial appointment. NO MATTER WHAT SENIOR MANAGEMENT IS FEEDING THE COMMUNITY. The VA has set up a series of kiosks in the building that asks very specific questions that are set up to make the VA look good no matter what the results of the survey.

It’s the “Fox guarding the henhouse” approach to managing information. If you ask the patients in the lobby how long they have to wait to get an appointment and then how long its takes them to move from one service to the other. You’ll find that the “official story” and the “reality” are different.

This is not the result of lazy employees. They (VA Employees) have to push through a pile of paperwork designed by the VA to “show” that the VA is providing quality care- Instead of providing the care. I ask that you talk to the Doctors, nurses, and other line staff and them about the challenges they are facing. What you’ll hear is the turnover rate of staff is higher than the fast food industry which is around 36%. Patients don’t know who is going to be their provider in mental health from one week to the next. I have had at least 5 different providers and they went from being doctors to being social workers. I need treatment for my problems not a discharge plan. Maybe they are trying to tell veterans something.

As a veteran, I’m telling all other veterans if you’re upset with your care NOW is the time to call our Congressman and Senators. Now is the time to let people know the type of care we are receiving. Whether the care is good, bad, or indifferent. I just feel it’s more indifferent these days. If you want information on how to contact your Congressman or Senator email me at jsmithanchorage@yahoo.com.

Alaska VA

It's been my experience that the level of care and the committment of the providers and other health care workers at the VA Clinic in Anchorage is superior to health care I've received elsewhere, in or out of the Veterans System. Recently I broke my leg, and was seen immediately in the ER at Elmendorf, an appointment was made within days with an Orthopedic Surgeon to make plans to repair the damage. within two weeks, the surgery was done and the follow-up care has been awesome. The VA Health System in Alaska gets 2 thumbs up from me.

Veterans First?! Apparently not Anymore!

Several years ago the Alaska VA had a policy of Veterans First, it was plastered all over the walls, one day all of that disappeared, all the posters and literature advocating veterans first disappeared. Then the hospital out at EAFB was built originally as a joint VA/Military and but then except for the ER, veterans couldn't use the hospital you still had to go outside to get surgeries, it was just recently that the latest base commander opened up the hospital for veterans care. That's great but it shouldn't have taken so long. It's worse out there, they are even more understaffed than the VA clinic. Regardless it takes months to get an appointment. The mental health department is badly understaffed. I believe some of the people who work there care but they don't make the rules, they are as powerless as we veterans because the people up top don't care. All the money going for the war, I feel sorry for our wounded veterans, not much of that money has gone for their care. There needs to be people in charge who understand that these men and women coming back are often broken as much in spirit as body and be prepared for that.

Anchorage V.A. Much better than the "Lower 48"

I was honorably medically discharged from the Navy in 2000. I received a 60% disability rating with the Department of Veteran's Affairs. When I came home to Anchorage to start over, I was quite impressed with the level of dedication that the staff of the Anchorage V.A. gave me in trying to help me overcome my disability.
If I ever needed to see my primary care provider, I was able to have an appointment made within a week or two and when I arrived, I was treated with dignity and respect.

On the other hand, I moved from Anchorage to Charlotte, North Carolina a few years ago to attend school here under the V.A. Vocational Rehabilitation program.
From the moment I walked into the V.A. Hospital here which is 30 minutes away, I was treated as a nuisance.

After about 5 hours of getting the run around with employees stating that they couldn't help me get situated and that it was another person's job, I finally became "checked in" to their system. That’s where the real headache begins.

Getting an appointment at the W.G. Hefner V.A. Hospital in Salisbury, N.C. is like pulling teeth. Appointments for even 60% disabled vets are over 2-3 months long. When you arrive at your appointment you usually wait 3 extra hours to be seen do to the whole place being undermanned from the nurses to the doctors.

When you do finally get to see your doctor, you are treated like a cow being herded from one area to the next and you are lucky if your doctor listens to even a tenth of what you have to say.

Because of the lack of quality care that I've received here in N.C., my second disc herniation was undiagnosed until I literally could not walk anymore. Only when the V.A. doctors saw a 30 year old man crawl through their hospital on his hands and knees did they start to ask what was wrong with me. This was after taking a 30 minute drive from Charlotte to Salisbury because I cannot be seen at any other hospital for emergency services unless I want to pay out of pocket.

Thankfully I qualified for the Fee-Basis program which allowed me to see a local civilian neurosurgeon for my injuries due to the fact that if the V.A. were to take care of my second herniation I would have to wait a few months, and drive another 3 hours to the Durham V.A. Hospital which has a neurosurgeon.

To close, it has been a little over a month since I've undergone a spinal fusion of my lower lumbar through a civilian neurosurgeon and I wonder every day how I might have been treated and how this would have been handled if I was only back home in Anchorage.

Depends on where you are

VA care varies from hospital to hospital. In the San Francisco Bay area, care is first rate, as good as anyplace. Portland is good. The VA hospitals are a reflection of the medical culture which surrounds them.

Vet Care

The VA medical is quite good given the conditions the worker bee level VA care provider is forced to work under. The VA is a huge unmanageble blob run by politicians and butt kissers. They have no incentive to provide quality care or improve conditions and are in fact charged to do the exact opposite. As long as there are no people named Bush or Chenney or Clinton or Stevens getting shot at, the VA is just an expensive drain from their pet projects and their wallets.
The VA staff the vet sees each day are doing the best they can. They are caring healthcare professionals that display compassion and concern. Sure some are numb and seem deadpan. A person can only expend so much personal emotion, only to be squashed by uncaring, uninvested non-stake holder burauecrats, before they do become numb or go elsewhere.
I am a retired vet with a 60% disability who has been treated by the VA for over 10 years. The best care in the world? Probably not. The fastest care? I don't know, have you tried to get in to see a medical specialist or a medicare doctor in Alaska lately? Solid care? Yes. The people you see in the local VA medical facility have done a lot with less for vets. Bush has cut funds to a long list of vet services. He doesn't care, he has no concept of military service.
My solution? Let vet organizations like VFW and American Legion process disability applications and place VA medical under the DoD.

Access to providers at the VA clinic

I like to comment on the time it takes to see a provider at the VA clinic. My father who is retired from the Army after 24 years has been using the Va clinic for the last several years. Compliant I hear from him is the time it takes to see his health care provider and the referral paperwork that takes a long time to see a provider outside of the VA clinic.

I recently hear how we can build VA clinics with magnificant view of the mountains, but what use is that if you can't even get in to see the provider for at least three weeks or sometimes months. Timeframe to get in and see providers is unacceptable especially when you are in pain.

Soldiers when enlisted are asked to get the job done. I like to see the VA healthcare step up and get the job done. Some accountablity, bench marks from health care industry needs to be implemented.

VA Health Care

You know way back when I was in nursing school in the 1980's we did a clinical rotqation at the Brecksville, Ohio VA hospital. My family has long been in the military and what I saw there was disappointing. The vets got and probaly still get the worst care I could have ever imagined. For a student nurse to see such treatment, especially of our vets made me angry. This is nothing new its been going on in the VA system for more than 20 years now. Its about time that the news stops making stories out of old washed up Playboy playmates and there gold digging and look to find some of the real stories out there in life. What goes on inside the VA is terrible.

Active duty & veteran healthcare

Health care differs between active duty & veterans due to the mission of each. The active duty health care system is for service members in their prime( under 55 y/o) with the mission of keeping the service member fit to fight(the primary mission). The services also deliver health care for dependents but the primary goal is to support the active duty force untill the member completes their service and is discharged, retired or disabled beyond the capabilities to perform their job. Retired personel can receive care from the joint services essentially for life, all others are mostly, refered to the VA system. Both systems have advantages for the service member or the vet but both also have drawbacks. Dependant on dollars allocated thru DOD or the VA will determine the quality of healthcare facilities and the personnel that staff those facilities can be.During war the active force dependants and personnel not in the fight will not get the top priority,it must go with the fighting force to save as many lives and to stablise and get to safety as many wounded as possible. This happens to support the service member doing their primary job, as hard as that may seem that is where the care is needed and building maintiainence, dependant care and training will fall to less than what may be normally expected. Once stable, discharged or disabled the service members care is provided by the VA and it's many facilities. The trasition to this system is as dramatic as it is slow. In defence of the VA the system it is HUGE, there are 100 or more vets for every active member resulting in many more short comings than we are used to navigating. Unless 100% disabled, Former POW, or a Medal of Honor recepient you are just another veteran in a very long line. There have been improvements over the years but the VA is still "behind the curve" due to many delays that must be approved by our legislators and commander and chief before implimentation. Unfortunately veterans and their nomalities aquired during the service of their country must wait (in lines)at the pleasure of others, just as we served when we where strong and full of fight. We live in a nation that is just scratching the surface of recycling and they have not gotten to those that have and do defend this nation as yet, I'm not sure they ever will in my life time. Thank you to those that do serve.

VA Health care

I am a honorably discharged Viet Nam veteran, eligible for care in the VA system. I have been going through the system since 1999. At first the care was good, but the level of care has gone down. The caregivers were receptive at first. Then they started to ask why I was going through the VA clinic and not the NATIVE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM. I have fought the caregivers to receive the benefits accorded all veterans who qualify. Many of the rural veterans who qualify are not getting the care they should be getting. There is no service officer that comes to the villages save the "hub" towns. All who served during the Viet Nam war are now finding the results of the war have finally caught up with them. I was fortunate to enroll and qualify for care. There is a strong opposition for 'native' veterans in the Alaska VA to get them quality health care. Health care benefits are for all veterans who qualify, not just 'outsiders' who have moved to the state to get healthcare.

Bush vets have it rough

The VA does not understand that Alaska is a big place, and a high percentage of veterans come from remote areas. Imagine being a sick Vietnam vet and having to travel from Ambler to Kotzebue, Kotzebue to Anchorage, and then maybe be sent to Seattle. It would be easier to fly to Ramstein Germany to see a doctor. The VA needs to recognize the service of Bush and especially Native Vets, and to recognize their circumstances.
