DISCUSS: Skateboarders vs. the community?

Are skateboarders good-natured kids gathering to enjoy a healthy and ecologically harmless outdoor activity? Or troublemakers bent on enraging communities with their loud wheels and total disregard for the proper use of handrails?

Zidar, Skatepark........

Skateboarding doesn't just happen in California, just like moose hunting doesn't just happen in Alaska. Lot's of skateboarders paricipate in other sporting activities, track, cross-country, soccer. Skateboarding can also open doors for new career opportunities, like photography and auto-cad, and the folks can still go hunting. I mean really, "Go KILL a moose or something"?, brilliant terminology.

Skatepark.........

I think with the rise in gang-related activity there is no question that a skatepark is a good idea. Skateboarding is not a thug activity, it is a artistic means of self-expression, and it sounds like the more opportunities the folks have to express themselves while being active and not sitting in front of a video game, the better. The real challenges that face this project are finding a way to bring the community members together with the skaters and their parents and openly discussing the matter, w/compromise,and not assuming that a few bad apples represent the whole skateboarding culture. Thanks.

I WANNA RIDE

Well im a bmx biker and have been ridin the same old stuff for like five years and am ready for a new park I dont understand how they can build stuff like the green bridge by the native hospital for all that money but they cant build us just a park to ride the boniface mall could have been a really nice indoor park but all those years it was just sittin there we really do need a indoor park and im sure if all they wanted was money then bikers and skaters can get many sponsors to help with it. There is lots of talent in the extreme sports of Alaska we are doing the big things they are doing in the lower 48's but on really ghetto stuff so if givin a nice place to learn an ride we can have chances to change our lifes and do what we love for a living so who ever it is in charge set up a meeting and this time these meetings will lead to a park

build it soon, but right

My answer is yes to both questions. They're good-natured kids and troublemakers - and everything in between. Boarders are becoming more numerous each day. To make it accessible (to kids), build two or three parks! We (taxpayers) provide tennis, basketball, hockey, boxing, softball, and baseball, golf, and skiing! Why not boarding?

dude indoor park yeah

we dont even need this park its pointless, we need an indoor park, bad, there is only one in anchorage and it is on base, and most people cant get on base. if you want the park to be used to full potential make it indoor, otherwise itll be used like 5 months out of the year, and in winter well have nothing to do. since theres no indoor parks us skaters will do anything to skate, like a couple weeks ago me and some friends got arrested for skating in this abandoned building, no no trespassing signs, no locks on doors, we have to skate, as much as possible, every day, and if theres no park we might end up getting in trouble trying to skate at other places. MAKE AN INDOOR PARK.

yeah and why does everyone think all skaters are bad? thats gay. i bet the only reason those old people or whatever dont want the skatepark is that they dont want us skateboarders having fun, there dumb, its something we love, we dont complain when those old people make their little tennis courts or whatever, i dunno, just let us skate and enjoy life

Skatepark is needed!

I have been skateboarding since i was a little kid and i remember having that skate park over at central middle school, man i was happy because we didn't have any where to go.
My mom was happy because she knew where i was and i was getting a work out and also stayin out of trouble.
Over the years we had a skate park downtown which was ok.
We had a sick skate park called indo thanks too Scott Liska but it did get shut down.
What alaska needs is an indoor skatepark all these out door parks are just pointless and awaist of money. Skaters want to skate all day all night if possible. We all know how the weather is in alaska who knows how they day will go.
If we had an indoor park we could skate all day and wouldn't have to worry about it snowing or raining or it being to windy to skate.
The state wants too put all this money into this park by spenard, why not indoors? We will only get to skate it like 6 months out of the year and it will be cold. Why not put it some where everyone can get too? I understand skater are load because of the niose but if their is a time we can end the skate park i think that should be ok. We dont realy have anything to do here in alaska and an indoor park would be best to keep kides off the street.
Alot of people think skaters are all bad like we all fight and smoke and drink and thats not true.
We can actualy make a career from skateboarding if we had the park that we want instead of the state putting together all this concete and all this stuff that i know we dont want.
I know most of us kides in anchorage skate because the parks suck so we skate some where els. Most kides with alot of talent quit becuase their is no movement, and their is no where to practice to keep up with the competition in the lower 48.
Right now i am working on a project with A CHURCH AND LET ME TELL YOU IF THIS HAPPENS THIS WILL BE BIG! INDOORS? ALL THE SKATEBOARD STUFF SKATERS EVERY DREAMED OF WE WILL HAVE! AND TOO TOP IT OFF IF IT DOES GO THORUGH 5 PROS WILL BE COMMING UP TO SKATE AND DO A DEMO.
I am Preston Pollard and i dont drink or smoke, fight, sell drugs i just love to skateboard.
When i was in school teachers used to ask me what i wanted to do when i grow up haha i said i wanted to be a pro skateboarder they laughed and i toled them one day you will see me in a magazine!
God has blessed me and now i have been in a magazine twice and have sponsores that help me out!
All im saying is that if we have dreams we need to go forward with them mabe the state will not do it now but we will get something good one day we just cant give up.
If skaters out their or anyone would like a skatepark indoors should comment the more people the better then i can take it up to the paster!

Skateboarding

As a mother of two children, and a wife of a mountain boarder, I think a skate park is deff what we need here. I would rather have my children hanging out with skateboarders and getting their exercise then sitting at home playing pity I'm so dark and noone understands me. Even though I would be willing or my husband to take the girls to the skate park, I would think an indoor skate park would be more practical and useful all year round, to which if your worried about insurances then have the kids parents sign release forms, like you do when your kids are taking swimming lessons, or hockey, or shooting.

Just a thought...

Hockey rinks seem to be abundant in this icefield ridden state... is violence not inherent in hockey? What is the difference between an indoor sanctuary (or several) that condones this indoor sport in a climate which is more ice than thaw, but condemns skateboards to the outdoors in such a harsh environment?

OK kids, please trade in your skateboards for ice skates and beat the hell out of eachother. That is the way to get funded.

Skaters just want to skate

im a skater. i have been skating for about 4 years now. the parks we have are seriously crap. indo (which was our best spot also our only indoor park) went out of business and shut down, the C street park is about as big as my bedroom, has a very small amout of obsticals and easily becomes overcrowed, the park downtown is in a bad area and everytime i skate there i am harassed by drunks, and there was a shooting just outside the park this summer. also much of the park was burned a couple of summers ago and has not been updated since. skating is a very fun sport, but the lables that people give us is unneccessary and uncalled for. may times i have been called a "bad kid" because i skate. skaters just want a place that they can have fun at and skate things that they like to skate. we do not grind ledges at a school to destroy them, im sure if we wanted to destroy them we would be coming there with hammers and just smash everything. skating off loading docks and stairs does not desrtoy anything. i understand that grinding handrails can do some damage, but again, we do not do it to destroy them. we need a good skatepark that is fun to skaters of all abitities and in a good location. this can cut down on kids getting busted for truspassing for skating at businesses, and gives us a chance to do something we enjoy without getting in trouble. why support other sports but not skateboarding? Anchorage is always talking about how they are trying to keep teens out of trouble,so they go build ANOTHER baseball field when we already have a number of fields and they are all pretty much the same. why dont they do something for the kids that dont like baseball or want to try something new? we should treat every sport equally and treat the participants the same.

Skatepark

If the City is going to spend public funds on maintaining softball/baseball fields, basketball fields, soccer fields, football fields, and hockey rinks, then they should show the same amount of support to skateboarding. If presented with a clean, safe, appropriate enviornment skateboarders will show they are not the menace they are made out to be. I don't recall there being a rush to close down football fields in the wake of last year's violent incident involving high school players. Don't let one or two bad apples ruin the entire bunch.

Then it should be voted on and funds appropriated thru a bond issue and NOT built in a residential area next to people's homes running roughshod over the people that live there's feelings about it.

You're missing the point

The public does not vote on every single city budget item, that's why we elect people. By singling out a skatepark you are again denying those who do support the idea of their right to have their tax dollars put to use in a way they support. It's clear from your prior posts that you really don't understand how taxes, budgeting, or government really work.

Why doesn't someone open an indoor skatepark?

Vans - the shoe and clothing line - has opened a few indoor skateparks down in the Lower 48. I saw one in California at an Orange County shopping complex. Its massive and incredibly popular. A huge skate facility that has strictly enforced rules about protective gear, liability waivers, etc. They have different sessions for different age groups and skill levels. Kids pay to go there, but it takes this issue in a different direction. Besides, with our 9 months of winter weather it might make more sense. Someone should consider opening one at the perpetually-vacant Valley River Center out in Eagle River...

you pay for it then

If YOU want a skateboard park because YOU think junior needs one, then YOU pay for it and leave me out of it. I've got enough bills without worrying about being taxed (bilked) for a skateboard park. AND if these moronic assembly people think one has to be built, then it should be voted on and listen up: you DON'T build one of these in a residential neighborhood where the folks that live there do NOT want them there. This city is infested with morons that have no respect for other people's feelings on things like this. If these bureaucrats want them, then build them next to THEIR homes with THEIR money and leave us taxpayers alone.

A Park, or URBAN ASSULT, your choice!

Young folks DO need a healthy, supervised outlet for their hormonal hyper-side. They also need a safe SUPERVISED area - away from private property owners to participate in these activities. I agree age differences and bully proofing should be considered.

As a parent of a BMXer, I know that sport is a little more effective in working out kids hyper side, as well as more organized. When it is run like a sport (not like Wasilla does it), BMX has an association with well tested guidelines including wearing of safety equipment, that help keep kids safe.

My son has introduced me to a term used in skateboarding/biking, urban assault. This is the act of using whatever obstacle available, usually handrails, curbs and benches paid for by either businesses or public funds, to do their maneuvers on.

I for one would rather pay for a "Park" where these things can be monitored, than let young people ever get the idea that because we won't give them 'their place' they are just going to take it from anyone, and it is an OK thing to do.

Build it and they will come, even if it is a little out of the way.

Skaters are scum

This is a sub-culture of self-centered jerk offs who don't play regular sports cause they can't find any teamates who will put up with them. They have no respect for public property. Who is going to pay for their cat-scans and broken arms on city property? We can have slimeball lawyers who specialize in suing the city for skateboard injuries. Let em go live in LA if they want to live the California lifestyle. This is Alaska. Go shoot a moose or something.

what's a skater?

A skater is a kid who comes home from school and finds his alcoholic mom on the couch gettin it on with her latest boyfriend. Cartoons on the TV, ice beer on the coffee table. The kid picks up his board and goes downtown to trash public property in the name of "constructive activity." I have no problem with skating except for the need to destroy public property. I lived in San Francisco and the skaters were really making a mess of the place. Worse than the bums. It's the lack of respect. That's a big part of the culture. Anger over mom doing the wild thing at 3 in the afternoon with a complete stranger while Barney signs his song on the tube.

Astute observer

I'm just an astute observer. Did I mention that Spenard trailer parks produce a lot of skaters? I like to watch the skaters crash on Whacked-Out Sports. Skaters must hate their bodies. Destroying your joints to perform some goofy trick the world doesn't care about? Is that good mental health? It all comes back to anger over mom and her pink bathrobe and her flabby white thighs there on the couch with that new guy.

wow, nice attitude buddy

You really must have had a problem growing up, and you must have had some major problem with your mother if you can’t stop talking about one with a new guy every day, or was it because yours was like that. You don’t like it here go back home, obviously you don’t belong here. You want to talk about skaters being God awful people take a long look around you; there are people hundreds of times worse than them. So every now and again one or two decides to set a bad example. Let’s take a look at the crack whores, drug dealers, drunks, homeless. Get a clue and in touch with reality. The kids you’re making out to be awful and out of their minds are doing a "real" sport, Lets see you get out there and try to do half the things they are on a board, let alone one. They're not the problem, people with "your" mentality are

Ooo, so much anger!

As far as the risk to the public, doesn't the city have skate parks as it is? If so why don't you look into the lawsuits that the city has dealt with on this issue and fill us in.

Scum eh?

That sure was constructive. "Self-centered jerk offs"? C'mon. Skateboarders are no different than anybody else. Including gun-toting moose hunters. Just because you fail to appreciate the skills necessary to roll around town, let alone balance, on a skateboard doesn't mean you have the right to decry someone else for being able to do so. Typical mentality expected from someone who can't grasp the concept of alternative fun. Ever think that maybe skateboarding is good for a community? Keeps kids focused on something constructive. Broken bones are good for the local economy. Bone and joint clinics make money. What kind of parent sues a city for something that is completely the fault of a child? Not saying that its never happened, but most cities have the foresight to cover their behinds regarding proper liability issues. As a washed-up skateboarder turned fly-fisher, skateboarding opened my eyes to a unique appreciation for urban life. Team sports are so eighties man. And how much fun is it to shoot a moose? It just stands there. Yay.

skateboarders

YES Anchorage needs a skateboarding park. The majority of the skateboarders are good natured kids who would benefit to have a positive place to go. It would help to have a place for them to go because they are going to find other places that are not appropriate, ie. business places. If there was a way to monitor the skateboarders for the few less ruley kids then I think that would make all the difference. If the municipality would invest in a positive thing like this then perhaps it would benefit the community rather then having to call the police for other things that the kids might get into otherwise. Its a matter of perception, skateboarders get a bad wrap because of a few, but I would rather have the kids skateboarding then doing other things kids do when they get bored. Invest in this sterotype and see what happens.

They can be both...It just Depends on the Kid.

I've lived in the neighborhood (Spenard Rec.)for almost 36 years. In those years we have had our property vandalized 3 times. 2 of those 3 within the last year.
I am all for kids having fun. I am still a kid at heart. But not at the expense of my property. This is my biggest fear with putting this park right next to our homes.
There are so many other areas in Anchorage that are not residential. Why can't a skate park be placed there? Kids can then scream, play their music and be kids without disturbing the residence of a neighborhood!

Anchorage needs a Skate Park

For the most part any skate park user is there to enjoy themselves. Every major city and most smaller cities i.e. girdwood and Wasilla have these facilities. Anchorage is the only city I have lived in that hasn't publicly supported this activity with a proper facility. There has been talk of one but never any action. Please offer support for the BMX'rs and skateboarders in Anchorage, Alaska to have some good hearted fun.

Skateboarding Kids

I am a 32 year old skateboarder. I understand why these people would not want a skatepark near there home. Its too bad that these parks are usually unsupervised. The people that go to these parks to ride for the most part are there to have fun and hone their skills in this wonderful sport. Problems usually arise when loiterers who have no business being in the park start causing problems. Usually graffiti, loud baseing music from cars, fighting, and harrasment of younger children are terribly common at these places. What the city of Anchorage should do is open an indoor supervised park. The employees could be paid with free park time and a small annual fee that could be charged. The people who want to be there will be willing to put up the money. And those who shouldnt be there arent going to want to fork over cash to loiter. You could have strict policies concerning breaking park rules including people being banned from the park. How about hours for different age groups. The only reason these places are so out of control is because there is no one enforcing rules and guidelines. These people have my sympathy, and the troublemakers who are ruining everyone elses fun dont. I love skateboarding and it is a wonderful pasttime. Skate or die:)

Skateboarders

Kids are kids and they need a place to go and have fun. That sometimes involves a little rowdiness. We need lots more activities for kids in this age group, that they want to do, so they're not out there getting in trouble instead. It's an important age for that.

Loud wheels?

I hadn't heard of any harley powered skateboards.

Juneau has a dry sheltered skate park.

Tiny little Haines has HASL or Haines Amateur Skateboard League, (pronounced hassle) which is what Anchorage seems bent on here, a hassle. Not only do the kids skate, but learn civics in pursuit of their passion and obtain funding for a park.

Seems like healthy enough exercise to me using proper safety equipment.(brain bucket) All real sports come with some injuries.

Come on Los Anchorage, be more progressive!

stupid topic

don't these old fogeys have anything better to whine about? I mean yeah if you give skateboarding negative press then ofcourse misfits are going to be attracted to it, just like anything else.I'm 44 and I get less irritated by a pierced, tattooed skateboarder using natural horsepower to get around, than I do two blue hairs driving their oversized motorhomes towing some other car behind them, driving under the speed limit and basicly holding up traffic and polluting the world.....Now think to yourself, what irritates you more?

skateboards

I live down in Nevada and here we have stopped about 95% of the kids using sidewalks. In the park system there is want is called skateboards parks. This is where anyone at all ages can go and do anything on their skateboards and bmx bikes. I do not know the cost to put one up but you can write to the park area here and they can tell you what you need and might even send you some plans. Next to that is a place made for families to have whatever, places to have a bbq and also a baseball park. Might be something to look into cause we were all kids at one time and if the kids have a place to go and do their thing all the better. Least that is what I think.

build them next to your house

Well, I think these skate parks should be built by the parent's homes of the kids that do the skateboarding. OR how bout building it next to City Parks Planner Mr. Dunker's house. Wonder how fast that would happen? Old fogies my ass. People have a right to feel secure in their own home. Boom boxes and noise is pollution that invades homes like smoke. These people have a right to their privacy and a right to not put up with noise pollution and punk kids that have no respect for a person's privacy.

Not the issue

Let's look back a little further, like inside the familys and how there kids are raised. Don't knock the sport, I have seen trouble makers in all sorts of sports. As I said before most of the misfits are from homes that have no respect in them. Most parents are letting mtv and movies decide how there kids act. Or simply say its just a phase and they will get over it. There are some nice kids in the world and I keep seeing them lose privliges due to kids that are not taught right from wrong. If you should blame anyone, blame the parents for not raising there kids properly. Skateboarders are hardly the issue here.

skatepark

check out www.skatersforpublicskateparks.org
Take some time to look through this website, and you will see where the city of Anchorage AND the skaters went wrong with the now-closed park.
Use it as a learning tool to see what to do to prevent or minimize the same problems with a new park.
No reason to re-invent the wheel. And if the city is planning anything besides concrete, they will be wasting money. Don't make the same mistakes, check out the website!!

Concrete or nothing!

Excellent point of reference here. Parks should be public and free whenever possible. And whats this I hear about $250,000+ being spent on a new metal skatepark for Anchoragua? Are they nuts? And how much of this $250,000 is actually going to go towards materials? Metal is a waste of money not to mention a notorious rip-off. Go concrete or just forget about it. Look at the rest of America. Concrete has taken over. It's permanent and virtually maintainace free. Oh, and extremely conducive to honing a better skateboarding style. Metal parks obstacles are so banal and restrictive. Concrete flows. A nice concrete park can be formed with $250,000. Wake up skatepark commission. No offense, but a serious injustice will be done to the kids of Anchorage if the city goes with metal all around. Take my word for it. And if concrete should take preference, please, please don't invite the Wasilla park builders into the bidding process. Those guys messed up big time. That park is literally uphill. Anywho, good luck Anchorage.
