Let’s do this again some time.

Politicians, citizens and Veterans Day

We have spent time on this blog writing about our favored politicians. How many will take the time to write those politicians about our Veterans?

Across town sits an elderly gentleman. He hasn't been able to take a full breath in many decades. He is a disabled veteran and a senior citizen.
He is one of the dwindling Veterans that served in two wars, he is 85. He worries how he will pay for his medications due to the 'donut hole' in
medicare and for those of you that don't realize it disabled war veterans pay for meds at the VA facilities.

Across the room is a man that has not been able to sit or stand comfortably and has not known a pain free day in decades. He still is employed. He couldn't eat for a week on what he receives from VA he must work fulltime. The vacation time he earns is always used up as sick days because he has used up his actual sick time. He is a disabled veteran.

Across the miles, in a faraway state there is a headstone. That disabled veteran did not die in the war, but due to constant pain and severe depression he came home from a war with. He had visited his VA facility every month for nearly a year trying desperately to get help and received no help. He gave up. He took his own life.

These are only a few Veterans that I personally know. There are many thousands of Veterans suffering as you read this. Needlessly.

Veterans Day.

For those of you that do not realize how much suffering these veterans do daily from far away wars I wanted to remind you.

For those of you that think our VA system cares for or about our Vets I would like to tell you that it is sadly lacking. The Vets I just told you about are from long ago wars. Yet as I am writing this we are creating more disabled veterans. We did not take care of the ones we already had. What do you think is going to happen to these new ones?

The waiting lists are long. The cost is not free. The treatment is severely lacking. If you need a formulary medication you will seldom get it through VA. You will need to seek private medical care for that and pay for that and the medication out of pocket.

If you do get disability you have to fight for it for long periods of time. Most of the time you have to go through many more months of appeals to receive what was glaringly obvious from the beginning of the process.

Whatever your political affiliation, whatever your beliefs, remember what our service men and women are paying, have paid and will continue to pay in service to this country.

Talk is cheap. Write your politicians. All of them. This is not about politics this is about the basics of being humane. This is about taking care
of those that have given so much to take care of us. If you have the time to write in this blog about the politicians you want elected, you have
the time to write letters to those politicians. These Veterans defended you with all that they had. Can you not defend them with words?

When you fly your flag for Veterans Day remember there are many that are no longer physically able to lift that flag, there are many that cannot even
afford to buy that flag and there are so many that cannot see that flag. Do more than fly the flag. Take time to write a letter, many letters. Take time to
really show the Veterans how much you appreciate their service and how much you do care that they are treated with dignity, respect, and the best of medical care. I know this is long, but then so has the plight of the Veterans been long.

To all you Veterans out there......Thank you......I do remember.

Thank you

I too appreciate the outlet this blog provided for me during this political season. Although the gubernatorial candidate I supported lost, I take solace in the fact at the National and the State level some Legislators recieved the comeuppance they so richly deserved. I may be optimistic in my view, but I look forward to finally seeing some checks and balances.

You Did It, Kyle

Kyle:

Thank you for taking the time in this forum to allow the truth to emerge about certain candidates. It always does, eventually.

Those candidates who will obfuscate the true facts from the public, will only hurt themselves in the end.

And thank you, ADN, for providing this blog site.

Yes

thank you for allowing us to tell the truth about the Corrupt Bastards Club and other corrupt Republicans.

Palin is a breath of fresh air for her party and us Dems -who are tired of scandal-ridden conservatives.

  November 10, 2006 - 1:21pm | turdball

You know so little

Little MikeyL- You don't know any of these guys. You cant prove any one of them are corrupt. You don't know the circumstances of the CBC and how it came about. So until the indictments come down in about a week be careful. Most Alaskans are fine upstanding citizens. I am in the political arena and I can say most are honest. Its like anything else there are a few bad apples. But don't lump everyone into the same bag. If youre so concerned start researching some of the politicians. See where their donations come from and how they vote. Look at their financial disclosures and see who gets contracts and how they vote on those issues. That takes time. Then blog like you know what you're talking about.

B'Bye

Thanks for liking my name. I'd say something about the Gov's race but it would be sour grapes so I'll keep my mouth shut.

Things are looking great on the Nat'l front - talk about sunshine & fresh air.

Mike_L, I'm with you on the donuts (I'd vote for Dunk'n Donuts) but you'd better cool it - we need you around to help mau-mau the Republicans.

I'll leave you with a quote that made me think of certain politicians:
"There is nothing worse than aggressive stupidity."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832)

Peace out.

I agree

I agree with the sentiments of the other bloggers - a sense of relief that this chapter is over -- and that another is just now beginning.

Although I was initially hopeful of another outcome for the gov's race; all things considered, I'm getting excited about watching Sarah take a turn at running the show.

I think to the extent she can turn a clear ear towards Sean and other more centered voices in the Party and the State, she will do well - and hopefully so will the rest of us.

One thing I'm pretty sure of - we've got to have the most attractive governor in the country.

In contemplating the race further, I think Sarah's accessibility alone could have gotten her to the finish line first. She does an amazing job of communicating an openness and warmth to others. Indeed, this is a far cry from what we Alaskans are used to in our State's top leaders.

So, more power to you, Sarah.

To the rest of you bloggers - it was fun meeting in cyberspace and listening to what you had to say.

To Kyle and the ADN, thanks for offering the blog. All the best. See you down the trail...

and she being brand new

as much as I hate to admit it, I look forward to seeing a new face in Juneau -esp an attractive one. Though I will miss Kyle's handsome mug next to the blog link every day, and some of the hypo-manic posters and their psycho-babble, I too am running out of steam. Kyle -I do hope you get a blog going for the MUNI elections in 2007. They provide a good forum for the public and the arm chair quarterbacks.

I sincerely hope Democrats will reach across the aisle to cooperate with Sarah and her administration. We have too many important issues to waste on partisan politics.

My only suggestion is that Palin NOT hire Susan Harvey, Jerry Ward, or Robin Taylor for any position. Even though some of these folks supported her from Day One, don't let them taint her administration.

Also, please relocate the capital to Anchorage or McCarthy. I prefer the latter.

Doogan won by 40 points, which just tickled me silly to see tlamb99503 get such a whuppin. Remember -he said on this blog that he will NOT run for school board in 2007. Hold him to those words.

Lastly, and most importantly, please do whatever is necessary to bring a Dunkin Donuts and/or Krispy Kreme store to Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau.

"Angels can fly because they take themselves lightly; devils fall because of their gravity."
-G.K. Chesterton

"Humanity I love you because when you're hard up you pawn your intelligence to buy a drink."

Mike, it's been fun. I think

Mike, it's been fun. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the folks Sarah brings to Juneau. Some of the worst obstructionists on both sides of the aisle won't be returning, so there's an historic chance for cooperation. Let's keep our fingers crossed. As to Doogan, if I lived in his district, he would have gotten my vote, based on his wife's commercial alone.

  November 9, 2006 - 12:40pm | tlamb99503

Mike L

Mike I always enjoyed your posts. Even when you were wrong.

I told you Palin by 8 points. And I said no run in 2007.

Palin was the key to turning things around.

Doogan has his work cut out for himself. In two years things will be different ..... bank on it.

  November 9, 2006 - 11:39am | truthseeker

Nice post mike.....

despite our good natured jabs at each other during the campaign, in the end we are all alaskans. I like some of the demos that got elected to the legislature, including doogan, wilechowski (buy a vowel dude) and the two that took out seekins and holm in fbks. Those two were shameless pimps for the oil companies.

Hopefully a coalition can be put together that will present a united front to them. They don't respect weakness, the only respect stength.

And I agree with you on appointments of the weirdo hotheads like ward, etc. Hope she will avoid them. They are wreckers, not doers. I would love to see her appoint eric croft to do something.

Let's all hope for the best.

Thanks

for bringing campaign discussion to life. With so many people willing to discuss Alaskan issues its a wonder there isn't an Alaska discussion website. There's still plenty of issues facing Alaska after the fervor of the election calms. Happy Trails, North to the Future!!

My most sincere thank you.

It has been a pleasure to blog with you. A big heartfelt thanks to all of the staff at ADN who allowed this blog. While I don't agree with your paper 100% of the time, you have talent in your press room and editorial floor that money just can't buy. The ADN is full of intelligent, enlightened individuals with insight and integrity. I am also honored by the mention of my bloging name. Some day I will walk up to you and introduce myself and chat over coffee.

Yes, all of us are glad this campaign season has concluded. As we look back we will see this one was an exception to the rule of political campaigns. It was a clear mandate of the people which defined the outcome. There were concerns from every Alaskan Citizen, and now there are some very important issues to addressand hopefully a pipeline to build.

Again, Thank you for the past few weeks, and the best to everyone at the ADN. We would be less informed without you. And you do your job well and with temperance. In 20 years I hope to read some of your staff have won journalism awards and pulitzers. Each of you has the potential.

A pleased reader and blogger.

  November 9, 2006 - 10:51am | mike_l

fair weather friend

why do I think Turdball would be saying something else if Sarah had lost?

The hypocrisy makes me want to go out and do something crazy -like an eat an entire dozen donuts by myself.

I'm just glad we don't have to listen to Fagan shamelessly plug another conservative. The man needs to be duct-taped and thrown on to the dance floor at Mad Myrna's.

  November 9, 2006 - 6:05pm | turdball

Id be saying the same thing-----

I know some of these people. I know the hours and hard work they put in to do a job I couldnt do. They are intelligent compassionate people who usually report the right issues and sometimes have the somewhat correct opinion. A little controversy never hurts a democracy. And that we have here folks. Every word typed in this blog since the beginning can be attributed to every soldier who has fought for our freedom. Enjoy it, we would not be jabbing each other in China or Russia. Be thankful for everything you have, hug your children, and stop and enjoy the sunset. We are all very lucky to live in a great State in the GREATEST NATION in the world. And with that until the next campaign season. With gratitude to all of you, Turdball says good night and good luck.

  November 9, 2006 - 11:05pm | mike_l

As a veteran myself

I can honestly say -you need to be b*$#@-slapped for that kind of comment. Don't use our military service to serve your sick personal/political agendas. Patriotism is much more than any party or any party platform. You want our gratitude? Then don't mention our service. I feel like you slimed me...

  November 10, 2006 - 7:49am | turdball

I am from a military family and shame on you.

We are very fortunate to live in Alaska and in the United States. I work very hard to raise money for veterans issues and serve veterans every day. And you are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine simply because of our freedom. You can also use that freedom to turn it into a negative comment. You don't know me sir. You don't know my allegience, and you have no idea how much I love my state and my country. I can track my family's military service back several generations, some gave their lives, some came home to enjoy everything our flag represents. It allows you to flaunt your ignorance, and hostility. It also allows me to express my appreciation for the process, the freedom to vote, discuss issues freely and attend church. I can own a gun, and have certain rights that cannot be violated. And I am deeply grateful for each and every one of them. I am also grateful to every soldier who has ever defended those rights and freedoms. I could not ask for a better life or place to live. And I pray you are not my neighbor.

  November 10, 2006 - 2:53am | Black3

To the very end

you remained an effing idiot. If you are indeed a veteran, your attitudes dishonor your service.

  November 10, 2006 - 11:12am | mike_l

I keep forgetting

I'm dealing with people from the Valley.

But it just chaps my backside that some people out there who have never worn the uniform use our service to justify their political agendas.

You dishonor all veterans when you try and connect our service to your own party or your party platform.
