DISCUSS: Venezuelan oil to villagers

CITGO, a Venezuelan-owned oil company based out of Houston, recently announced it would donate 100 gallons of fuel for every household in 151 villages in Alaska.

However, in the wake of Veneuzelan president Hugo Chavez's remarks that George W. Bush is "the devil" who leaves sulfuric odors wherever he goes, many of the villages are declining the donation.

What do you think? Is free heat - in regions of Alaska where fuel is an expensive and valuable commodity - worth turning the other cheek for? Or is it an un-American act to accept aid from a public enemy?

Would you take the heat?

who's the real enemy?

I think its un-American to have allowed rural/bush Alaska to become so economically deprived the people can't afford fuel. $7 a gallon is gouging no matter where it is. In spite of a billion $$ spent on water/sewage systems, schools, and clinics there has been no economic infrastructure growth in these communities to pay for those amenities long term. Our legislature typically ignores the bush until disaster strikes or they are embarrassed by some world leader, even a despot like Chavez, even though none of them are standing up to condemn his offer. They haven't made a move in years to improve access, transportation, or economic opportunity and growth. How long do they expect the people to survive selling baskets? The corporations do have a responsibility, to the people they represent. Fact is, most of the corporations are dirt poor. Everybody hears about CIRI and NorthSlope and thinks all corps are doing as well, they aren't. Those high$ corps don't share their wealth with their lesser privileged brethren, they do not spread the "joy" around. Those that "own" the oil haven't offered to share, or help. Where's their 100 gallons per household offering? This isn't a new problem, much of Alaska has seen poverty deepen lately. Most have little hope that a natural gas pipeline will amount to anything more than bigger state government. Our legislature and leaders hope we won't vote. They hope we will never raise our voices loud enough to be heard. And because they stay secreted away in Juneau, they have no fear we will visit them en-masse. We don't need the hand of the government to feed us, but we should bite that hand hard enough to make it understand, we want a hand up, not a hand out. When our leaders have no shame, they are no longer leaders. I don't think our leaders are ashamed of themselves, they have fatted too long at the trough. I don't think they can hear us. If Chavez shames them by giving people fuel oil, it is nothing less than they deserve. In Alaska we will build a $350 Million prison, but won't make sure all our families are warm. There's something wrong with that. In this election year the most powerful weapon the people of Alaska have is the right to VOTE. This is not a year to stay away from the polls, it is a time for Alaskans to "stand our ground" against politics as usual. Could a real leader please step to the plate. -ab

opportunity

What has disappointed me most about this discussion is that no one is using it as an opportunity to start a broader discussion about energy policy in rural Alaska. Energy prices are spiraling out of control and pretty soon it's not going to be feasible to live in rural Alaska, which is good for no one. The fact that rural Alaskans are forced to take charity from a foreign government should be an indictment of failed policies in this state and this country.

Let's start talking about what we can do so that rural Alaskans never have to accept free fuel from anyone. Is anyone willing to have that conversation?

GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSE ABOUT VILLAGES, FOLKS!

...This whole state is on Welfare! We are one of the most undertaxed and over benefited populations under the American Flag. Uncle Sam sends more $ to Alaska than we send back in taxes. We got rid of the Income Tax in 1981, about the time that the PFD started to get distributed. Metropolitan Anchorage feeds off services to Rural Alaska and--by the way--the resource wealth comes from formerly aboriginal lands thank-you-very-much. The Four Dam Pool and the Intertie that feeds electricity to Southeast and Southcentral were funded from the same legislation that created the PCE that benefits Villages...

All this is not to mention that every man, woman and child in Alaska gets a PFD just for breathing...most of which flows to the Box Stores in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

And when it's time to cut the budget, you better believe that Rural gets cut first. After the 1985-1986 recession, the cuts to small community revenue-sharing were disproportionately larger than Anchorage and Fairbanks.

Programs like ISTEA funded by the Feds for Rural Road programs get spent in the suburbs of Eagle River.

And when you get on your high-horse about rural Alaska, consider this--everytime Alaska's Congressional Delegation gets Hell for pork like the Bridge to Nowhere and the Knick Arm Bridge they all stand up and trot out the "...poor Villages..." to justify the pork.

You can't have it both ways Alaska...either you pay YOUR own way or shut up about the Villages.

Y'know the sticker that says "Alaska-Land of the Free..."? Take a Magic Marker and just add the word "...Loader" to the end and you've got the story right.

Sure, Im willing

to have the conversation. It maybe short but is all that is needed; HAVE THE BIG BUCK NATIVE CORPORATIONS HELP OUT THEIR OWN PEOPLE WITH A LITTLE AID FOR FUEL. Ok, discussion concluded. By the way, its not feasible RIGHT NOW to live out in rural Alaska, what percentage do you think is on welfare and unemployed out there? Closer to all of them than none of them, time to crawl out of the cave (or igloo) and join the 21st century people.

Opportunity

I think it's a clear-cut solution. I do believe the Native Corps should be taking care of the oil needs of the folks living in Rural Alaska. They are the one's who can afford it. They need to stop driving their fancy cars and shelling out big bucks to their chosen few within the protected organizations. Sorry but the way I see it, it is protected racism. Let them spend some of their big money on their people who they "claim" to help. Yeah right.

private profits

Wouldn't it be nice if those private businesses spread their wealth a little more often rather than line their executives’ bank accounts? I would look upon this more favorably if it was a long term commitment. Sadly, next year it will be profits as usual. The American Dream would be much more attainable if the just some of the disposable wealth was spread around. If I were those villagers I would ask; "where were you last year?"

Shocking,

but nice to see that some villages have the intelligence to decline this PR stunt by the wacko from Venezuela! With all this talk about how the Govt should be helping out these poor villagers more, where are these Native corporations that are raking in the big bucks? Why aren't they helping out their own people, they more than have the means!? Anybody who accepts this fuel from this nutjob is a sellout and uneducated.

Cut The Bull!

"Wacko", "nutjob"?

You don't know anything about the history of the program, do you? Didn't think so.

You don't know anything about the history of U.S. intervention in Latin America, do you?
Didn't Think so.

You learn everything you need to know from Fox News and Rush Limbaugh, Don't You?
Thought so.

Wake up and read about the world before you open your mouth and embarrass yourself.

riiiight,

Im awake and can tell you are most likely an angry villager??? I also know the president of Venezuela is a moronic dictator using the rural residents outstretched hands as a lame PR stunt. By the way, I really enjoy Foxnews especially Bill Oreilly. Thanks for the kind response though, grump.

Native Corps

Thanks for pointing out about the Native Corps. If any organization should be helping these villages it should be the large Native Corporations. They are another group that line their own pockets and do very little for their own people; I have seen this in action so I know what I am talking about.

Chavez is trying to establish a foothold in the world, one which he can influence policy and change. Dangerous, because he is anti-american and pro-our enemy. He has called for the downfall of America, our destruction.
He is giving fuel oil to minoritys that he believes he will be able to draw into a'hand-out' addiction. Drawing these minoritys to his political left, thus establishing a further foothold of POLICY influence. You will not see this influence flexed at the local or state level. He will flex it at the national and world level.
As the dumbest of editorials states 'Venezuala helps Alaska' and 'who cares about the political ideas of a person if they're giving you free fuel?' is the evidence of zero understanding of an enemy that is trying to gain ground. Where do we and where does this editorial writer draw the line? Which is more important? The gift or the giver?

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INFORMATION?

I'm having a hard time keeping up with all the empty rhetoric that is being thrown around here.

Chavez is a socialist, yes, but he is also a deeply religious Catholic and a very well-educated man.

He's pro-"our enemy"...hmmm...if you mean the non-aligned world, then you are talking about 3/4 of the planet.

Chavez despises Bush--for excellent reasons. He does not hate America.

He is democratically elected and hugely popular in his country (unlike Bush). He has chosen to invest his country's wealth in hospitals, education and infrastructure. The rural Venezuelans are NOT paying $6 a gallon for oil, that is for sure. By 2010, he wants to eliminate poverty in his country.

Tell me, my friend...what comparable goal does the United States have?

Hardly a "dangerous" man to me...

A mind is a terrible thing to waste!

Chavez, a deeply religious Catholic? Interesting. Even the Pope is on record in June of this year telling Chavez that he better back off on his threats and intimidation of the Catholic Church in Venezuela. Chavez has threatened the Bishop to Venezuala of expulsion if he makes anymore comments against Chavez. Chavezs' recent speach at the UN was ended with him stating "Praise be to Allah". Doesn't sound like a good Catholic to me.

He gained office in a military coup. In the last elections he was elected, although the UN was present to witness pro-Chavez troops set up around voting booths not letting anti-Chavez citizens vote.

And his investment in his country is buying the poor, their vote, and their loyalty. While at the same time he has created vast wealth with anyone that supported his coup. Additionally, he has spent over $17 billion on arms, and military growth. His neighbors are growing concerned over this military might that is not justified. If his country loves him, why is he arming for war?

The Venezuelan Information Office (VIO)in Washington DC, funded by Chavez goverment is his media watchdog. As of January 2007 all media in Venezuela will be their under permit, if the VIO withnesses any media writing anti-Chavez articles they will yank that media permit and cutoff the network. Cencorship, so you only get articles of praise. The VIO's mission is to be the watchdog, to create support and sympathy in the American public. If something anti-Chavez is written the VIO sends out 'action alerts' to regional 'would be writers' to counter the claim. As you may be one.

The VIO was duplicated from the Communsit Party of the United States which was shut down in the 1950's "as an agency of a hostile foreign power'.

Is this enough empty rhetoric for you? You have a mind don't waste it.

Where did "you" get your info

Hmmmm...I am thinking maybe you should move there and get a job working for Chavez. America is not perfect, nor will we ever have perfect leadership from either party, be it the Dems or Republicans. They are all basically the same!! However, Chavez won you over and that is what he wants to do with the American people; it will help along his grudge with Bush. I don't like or support Bush or any Dem as far as that goes, but I can see Chavez for exactly what he is and it ain't good!!!

Who declined the fuel? Not the villagers....

The leader of the Native corporation, who lives in Tucson, was the one who made the patriotic speech and declined the fuel. I guess it's hard to think about heating oil when it's over 100 degrees every day. Besides, how does it hurt Chavez if we refuse the gift? What a crock. What a bunch of phonies we have posing as American patriots. One more thing...it's not lost on the locals around here that Chavez is also an American Native.

Chavez

I don't feel Chavez was doing this out of the goodness of his heart; he was doing it to make Bush and our country look bad. Now I am not a supporter of Bush but I did not like Chavez's remarks about Bush or our country. As an Alaskan, I think it's pitiful that the big oil companies up here who just got their big break (thieving, lying greedy ******) should have volunteered oil well before Chavez did.

What in the Heck is the Point?

Refusing the oil may feel good, but it's nonsensical. As Congressman Young said in his interview with Mike Carey..."look, this whole country runs on Venezuelan oil, why shouldn't they accept the gift?" For once Young makes sense.

All this flag waving is foolish when the patrots are standing on the sidelines watching someone else make the sacrifice. And passing the hat to replace a one-time gift isn't going to provide a long-term solution to an a situation that in endemic to Alaska's economy.

Villagers decline free fuel

I say good for the villagers! Goes to show there are still people in our country who will stand up for what they believe in instead of selling out. Reading the daily news throughout the United States you begin to wonder. Again, from a former (30 year) Alaska resident, good for the villagers ! ! ! !

Easy to Judge

You may say "good for the villagers" from your warm home in New Mexico because you're not paying $7/gallon just to stay warm!!! Just because you take MUCH NEEDED help from an idealist whose ideas aren't in line with American imperialism doesn't mean you're selling out.

Clarification

NOT American imperialism, BUSH IMPERIALISM!

Chavez even supports the rights of gays and lesbians, how big a tyrant can he be? Are we to believe he is a tyrant just because "Honest-yeah-right-George" says so?

Chavez does NOT hate America! He just hates Bush. So do I!

Bush Imperialism

I do not support Bush but I do not support a tyrant leader whose own people are very poor making accusations. Chavez is NOT a friend of America. I don't care who supports gays and lesbians, the fact remains Chavez is a dictator with starving people in his own country simply trying to win the friendship of the American citizens!
