Part hero, part myth: simple human, wife and mother

My condolences go out to Susan's Butcher's husband, family, and children. It has to be hard for these children to wrap their arms around the notions that their personal-life mother was so loved and idolized by people who never even met her for things that occured before they were born. I beleive, first and formost before we in the public hoist her memory and symbolism, which apparently gives us the existencial meaning in life we so crave, we remember those close to the simple mother, wife, and human ans allow them time and space to grieve.

I am pleased that the state honored her with a special day within the year of her untimely and premature death. It was appropriate that it was bestowed upon the day coinciding with the event that defined her public life, the Iditarod. I believe that in perpetuity of her memory measures should be taken in proportion to those that honored the passing of Iditarod father, Joe Redington, Sr.. Those measures consisted of commemorative signage along the sides of the road where Joe resided and a statue and Iditarod headquarters.

Most respondents to this discussion board concur that Susan's fame was derived from her association with the Iditarod. Many concur that the Iditarod grew in recognition, monetary gain, and status because of Susan Butcher. Therefore it would be fitting for the organization that received such a largess give back to its human contributor. So therefore, it would be selfish and ungrateful for the Iditarod not to shoulder and take responsibility for her honor.

I humbly submit that any individual who sought person recognition and monetary gain by offering their services and persona to corporate sponsorship should be eliminated from consideration by the State of Alaska for perpetual annual recognition. It opens up the potential, though entrepreneurial it may be but unethical for Susan's previous sponsors to co-opt the day for financial gain. I do not want to image a GCI Susan Butcher Day or Providence Hospital Susan Butcher Day. Cold as it may sound, I do not believe that our state designated heroes should have been bought for commercial ventures.

Again, Susan Butcher evoked to many a symbolism of mythical proportion of a simple female from the outside who became an Alaskan folk hero of word and deed. It is good for those who gain personal encouragement to keep these images in their hearts. And it is equally as good to remember the family who has lost the humble human touch of a mother, wife, helpmate.

Susan Butcher belongs to the world.

I am flying to Anchorage tomorrow because I met a very sick lady from Alaska at the San Diego Airport last May. She had luminous eyes filled with spirit and I swore to her that I would see a dream of mine... the Iditarod. My dream to see the Iditarod began with Susan Butcher.

Reading about her awakened my interest in the Iditarod and what it represents.

She was living a dream I once had...this girl was actually living her life to suit herself - and winning!
She was no ordinary girl...maybe in Alaska filled with Wonder Women ... but not to us living elsewhere.
She is an example to girls, to woman, that they too can live their dream.

She proved that Alaska takes girls, soft people from another place, and turns them into strong woman living life as it is meant to be lived. Fully, completely. Daring to live and meeting the challenge of life in God's Country - Alaska.

I see her as one of Alaska's national treasures for what she represents to the rest of the world.... a girl making her way into a life most girls are afraid to live. Susan Butcher led the way.

She was inspiration to those of us not living here...she gave us strength and a sense of wonder...she represented Alaska and infused me with a desire to see the Iditarod some day.

Susan Butcher represented the woman of Alaska...bigger than life...stronger than the rest of us... she was an Alaskan woman!

Susan was very competitive, a lady that gave her all in all she did, but we need to think twice about putting a day a side for one great person. My thoughts and prayers are that more and more time should be set a side for our American military as they are giving it all too. Sure there is a veteran's day, but when an Alaska GI dies in combat then are we going to make a day for this person also, soon we would run out of days.
My feelings are make Susan's day this year at the start of the Iditarod race and those who know her will not forget. May God be with her husband and children.

Sometimes people are bigger than Life. I think this defines Susan Butcher. She gave so much to this state and to dog mushing. She will not be forgotten.

"Shining Star"

Susan was an incredible woman and will be greatly missed. Alaska's young girls don't have many women to look up to and her loss will be evident. Genuine

As I sat on the snowy banks of Kaltag, eagerly awaiting the first musher to arrive, Susan came and sat beside me. She was so nice and she laughed as I chided her about coming back to beat the boys. She will be missed.

Our Queen of the North

Our "Queen of the North" is gone from our presence but her memory will live on forever in our hearts. To Honor Susan Butcher

To honor Susan Butcher and her achievements, we should make certain we always remember her. We should make certain we pass her story on down through the generations. Too often, as a society and as individuals, we grieve for a short while and then we go on with the business of living our lives and before we know it, we have forgotten those who have gone on before us. There should be a monument to mushers in Alaska where people can go to pay their respects, share their memories, see a pictorial history of mushers in the magnificent State of Alaska. There is such a rich history in these courageous, dog-loving people. Let's not lose it, let's keep it alive. Let's keep the memory, all the glorious memories of Susan Butcher alive. Honor her, her life here on earth, her contributions to the Alaskan and dog-loving community, by always remembering her, by sharing her story with the generations to come.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Alaska and the family of Susan Butcher. I met Susan in 2001 and found her not only a gracious woman, but a woman full of love for her family, country and her life. She will be missed by many. Her touch will stay with me forever. Her final farewell

If she will be buried in Alaska she should be brought to her final resting place on a sled pulled by her beloved dogs. It is a farewell most fitting for such an inspirational and determined woman.

I also agree with a previous poster that a statue should be erected in her honor.

A Real Loss for Alaska and Family

We are so sad

Susan Butcher - A True Legend in Her Own Time

My heart hurts for her family, and for me. Susan has always been an inspiration to me - I am angry and upset that she is gone, she fought so hard! I know that she is in a better place now, and I know that she will forever live in our hears.

I am hoping that your fine state will declare a "SUSAN BUTCHER DAY" in her honor, she deserves nothing less. She fought the "good fight". I believe that I speak for us all when I say that, "She must not be forgotten."

I followed Susan's career

I followed Susan's career after leaving Alaska many years ago and relocating to Seattle. Although I was saddened to hear that she died yesterday, I remember watching her, the fledgling female musher, leave the gate on 4th Avenue in Anchorage on more than one occasion. I was in awe of her athletic prowess, spirit, determination, and open affection for her dogs. I am again in awe of Susan's courage, spirit, and essence which carried her through her final battle. Blessings and prayers are being sent to her children, husband, and extended family....most of all, to her.

I have followed Susan Butcher's career since the early 1980's. It is because of her that I became very interested in the Iditarod. She was a wonderful person and did so many positive things for the Iditarod, Alaska & women. I fell so badly that she lost this last big fighe. My thoughts and prayers go to David and the girls.

Although I only saw Susan from the deck of the Discovery, when you think about Alaska, the name Susan Butcher is always in one's mind.
My family lived in AK for a long time from the late 1940's, with relatives still in Wasilla.

Will miss Her

My family live her in Fairbanks and we always supported her. Both my daughter, Mandy, and I were so moved by her need for bone marrow testing that we went down to FMH and contributed.
We both are truly saddened by the loss.
