DISCUSS: Death of Fur Rondy

Only a month ago talks were underway about how to revive Anchorage's historic Fur Rendezvous. Instead, it has been announced that the 72-year-old winter festival will be canceled completely. Is it best to bid farewell to the carnival? Or will the city be missing something significant in winter's to come?

FUR RONDY PARADE SAVED BY ROBERT HAYES & RICK RYDELL

AFTER ROB & RICK GAVE THE CITY A GOING OVER ABOUT LETTING THE 2007 PARADE CANCEL DUE TO SCHEDULING (CONFLICTS) THEY FOUND A WAY TO FIT IT IN!

The blame is us

Fur rondy events began to die when the government got tough on DUI's. Gambling, drinking, and smoking are no longer acceptable in our town for community events. This was a fun loving celebration during our dark winters. With citizens told they are evil for having fun, it's no wonder the crazy characters of days past will not come out. The boring born again Christians got what they wished for...No more Rondy.

Fur Rondy demise was about money?

If it all came down to the money, then I'd be interested in what the annual budget for Fur Rondy was spent on. Advertising? Payroll?
How much revenue was brought in annually? With every vendor booth, contest entry, commemorative button, ride, concession, parking, and a multitude of other revenue generating fees, I'd be interested in where the money went? Was there a board that had oversight of all of this? I'd like to hear their comments on the matter. Anchorage Lost AFN, and now Fur Rondy is kaput. What's next...the Iditarod?

When the organization let the huge signature event Monte Carlo night go it was just a matter of time. This is a sad day.

This is a little distressing. We've just moved here and I was so looking forward to the mid-winter festival! After 72 years, it has to die THIS year?

Fur Rondy

I have attended the Fur Rondy for many years. My children were raised to look forward to and attended this event every year for the last 24 years. I really hate to see the Anchorage Fur Rondy cancelled. Especially due to lack of funds. This is an historical event to all and also breaks up the long winters. Can anyone do anything to save the AFR for our future generations? Maybe the State of Alaska or the City of Anchorage can come up with some funds.
I hope so. If not it will be a sorely missed event.

Just part of the Mayor's plan to take over everything

I think part of the reason Rondy is going away is because the Muni really wants to take it over so it can make more money for the city. The city seems to be getting more and more involved in what really should be private (or non-profit) enterprises. I think that's what Begich sees as a way to make more money. That's great, but he should be concentrating more on the crime in this horribly crime-ridden city.

As far as going downhill, yes, Rondy was, but not to the point it should have closed it's doors.

What this city (and state for that matter) needs is fresh blood, not the same old people doing the same old things. Keep the ice scupltures, keep the rides, keep the dog races, (which didn't happen this year), and keep some of the events, but hold them in a central location like the Egan or Sullivan. Work with the school to have kids sell tickets and some of the proceeds go to the schools.

There's lots of ways around it, but the city should not be planning it - private enterprise should.

I hate to see the Fur Rondy

I hate to see the Fur Rondy die...but it has been dying a slow death for years. I enjoyed the event the first decade of my 25 years in Alaska, but over the years saw very little change in the events offered. I know many long-time Alaskana who lost interest in the Rondy becuse it didn't offer both the NEW with the old. I have a collection of the pins for the 25 years I was there and will always cherish them. I hope the city can give the event new life. It was great years ago. May she rest in peace!
