DISCUSS: Northern Lights powerline poles

Colony High School in Palmer doesn't hand out the letter grade D in an effort to discourage mediocrity, and the Mat-Su school Board is considering implementing this policy throughout the district. What do you think? Does this encourage students to work harder or does it simply result in more failures and leave below-average students behind?

Chugach Electric disrespect

The monstrous power poles being erected on East Northern Lights boulevard are an eyesore and the people that planned them should be removed from their jobs. At a time when the residents of East Anchorage are battling insensitive commercial developers and working to improve the safety and quality of life for its environs, the lack of community involvement in the planning of this project is inexcusable. It is also prejudicial, I do not think the power company would consider something like this in other more prestigious neighborhoods of Anchorage. This is a ham-handed slap in the face to the lower income, ethnically diverse populations of the East side.
Take them down, Chugach Electric. Bury the power lines and give the people back there beautiful mountains...

I think that Chugach is doing the right thing. These people who live around these need to realize that we are a growing city and we need more power. If they dont like them then, just move. I think they need to just get used to them, because their are going to be more and we need all them power that we can get.

Chugach Power Poles

The new view is "shocking" !! And wait to see how bad it will be once the wires are up........it will make today's view seem "nice". Welcome to the new industrial zone in east Anchorage. Isn't there something about social and environmental justice that should get those poles down now?? Homeowners were not notified. Not nice Chugach !!

They obviously are thinking ahead, this city is growing and more power will be needed. I think people don't like change and they'll get over this issue pretty quickly. In the meanwhile please respect the construction workers and slow down. Thank you!

There WAS and IS an alternative!

I don't think anyone who's against this powerline disputes the fact that the electricity is needed for current and future needs. The problem is that Chugach Electric did not adequately consider alternatives to the poles. Additionally, CEA did not adequately publicize that they were going to erect what we now know is an ugly eyesore that will be with us for decades.

In the ADN article, Phil Steyer, Chugach Electric spokesman, said the new circuit could have been placed underground, and it would have left the existing poles (carrying the two existing circuits) in place for the main transmission line. This is an admission on Chugach's part that they did not need to erect the new 90-foot tall poles and the six electric lines they will carry. Sure, it may have cost Chugach a bit more to bury a new powerline, but instead they chose to construct a monstrosity that will be a blight on east Anchorage. And to top it off, CEA apparently held only two meetings, one with the University Area Community Council and one with the Scenic Foothills Community Council, to discuss the project. This was totally inadequate, as it ensured that virtually no one was aware of this project until the poles went up.

Come on people, let's not sit idly by and let CEA get away with forcing this ugly, unnecessary eyesore on us for decades to come. Now is the time to rise up and demand of our representatives that this project be dismantled immediately, in favor of a buried powerline.

Who ever approved the installation of these mid-evil looking monsters needs to be hung. I don't care if they fall under different rules than billboards. Where is the fore thought? What were they thinking? These have to be the most obtrusive and unattractive items to scale the skies of this city. The neighbors across the street were notified but i guess we don't count. What is the alternative??? Were there any??? Maybe i can influence a change at the Board of Directors for Chugach Electric during the upcoming election...

Power Poles N lights

They are horrible. No property owners were allowed to vote on them being installed. I don’t care if it cost Chugiak BILLIONS to take them down it is on them not us property owners. Did anyone stop to think how our property value just dropped. They are going to make N lights property crash like back in the 80's. Who in there right mind would want to look out there window or drive down there street and see those ugly nasty things. I know i would never buy a house with them there.

I could be wrong but i believe our electric rates were raised so that all the lines in Anchorage could be buried. That does not look like what is happening. Did you think that ppl would not look up.

Take them down and eat the cost. We should not be responsible one bit for the cost.

Take it down NOW!

This monstrosity is and will be an incredible blight on our community. One of these poles is only 440 feet from my house, and the view from my living room will now include a spiderweb of wires. This thing towers above and absolutely dominates the surrounding neighborhoods. If you think this thing is ugly now, just wait till they string the wires - it'll be 10 times worse.

It is absolutely irresponsible on Chugach Electric's part to not seek broad approval for this eyesore. If it's been in the planning stages for a year or so, then why didn't the vast majority of people on both sides of Northern Lights know about it? Every business and homeowner within a mile on both sides of this powerline should have been notified in writing and there should have been more done to hold public meetings. The bottom line is that Chugach Electric knew from the start that this project would generate considerable unfavorable input and they did just the absolute bare minimum to play down the size and scope of the powerline.

As stated in the ADN article, Chugach Electric admitted that they could have kept the two existing electrical circuits and buried the new one. This would have negated the need for the new 90-foot poles and 6 new electric wires snaking across the sky.

We, as citizens, homeowners, and business people need to start taking an active interest in the planning and development of our community. We DO NOT have to blindly sit by and accept the idea that "progress" is inevitable and that there's nothing we can do about it. WE CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! The entire University/Medical District is the fastest growing and developing area in Anchorage. How long are we going to idly sit by and watch our last remaining green spaces and aesthetic values be devoured by relentless and ill-planned development projects?

If you care about your neighborhoods and quality of life, please contact your community council members, your Anchorage Assembly members, and the Mayor and let them know your opinion on this ugly and unnecesary powerline project. Demand that all work be immediately stopped and that comprehensive public meetings and input be conducted. In the end, I think most people would agree that the right thing for Chugach Electric to do is to remove the new poles they put up, maintain the two circuits on the existing wooden poles, and bury the new circuit that is needed.

Chughach Electric Power Poles

I think that Chugach Electric knew full well how the neighborhoods would react to the power poles currently being erected. They knew that they were ugly and totally inappropriate for Northern Lights Blvd. Rather than solicit the comments they knew would be inevitable, Chugach Electric felt it would be better to go ahead and install them, then plead it would be too expensive to pull them down. I am appalled that these kinds of decisions have been made with little to no public comment. It affects property values and neighborhood quality. A company that plays such a public role should not have acted in such a irresponsible and unilateral manner regardless of their easement rights. Chugach purely paid lip service to the idea of community input in order to satisfy their needs.

This is the worst blight on our city in a long, long time. I live in East Anchorage. The beautiful drive home from downtown is totally obscured by these ugly monsters. Worrying about a sign ordinance pales in signifance to these things. They must be dismantaled immediately.! Whoever authorized them should be fired. Our quality of life has been diminished.

N. Lights Powerline Poles

I don't even live in this community, but upon traversing down this stretch of road I said to myself what a hideous site these poles are. I have to assume that there is another means to succeed in this upgrade without having to look at towers of rust. I mean a color change may even help.

Powerline poles

They are ugly - plain and simple. I'm sure there was a better solution (like burying the lines) but nobody was willing to pony up the money... I think this was the cheap & easy fix, not necessarily the best solution.

Progress without impact is achievable

Any "public" upgrade that is performed within the city by the State(ADOT), Municipality(MOA) and/or Utility companies have various options or alternatives for the proposed upgrade. The guiding light is "money". Yes, the powerlines could have been placed underground, just like they were on 15th Avenue or on Bragaw Street, it is expensive, but the difference there was that the upgrade was part of a road improvements project.
But still, and giving that undergrounding has been done before, these poles did not have to be erected, the lines could have been placed underground, all it would have taken was more money.
The Federal Government likes to pay for these upgrades and the cost to ADOT, MOA or CEA would be much less.
So as you can see Progress can be achieved without impact, and you don't have to get used to it.

This project has been on tap for more than a year and a half and has been well documented. This project may have been modified if ANYONE was awake out there. The Assembly members who represent that area have known about it for at least a year and did nothing. Why? Because none of you seemed to care a year ago. Pay attention to the world around you and you might be surprised what you can do.

power

The poles give our residential area the appearace of a commercial zone. These poles would be appropriate along the Glenn or Seward Highways but not in our neighborhoods. The once lovely view of the mountains from any direction is now blocked by the ugly poles.
There was no prior notification or public comment period for those of us in the adjacent neighborhoods. I am a member of Chugach Electric and received nothing from the company. This should have been an underground project.
The poles are a major detraction and disrupts attempts to improve both Anchorage and particularly Muldoon.
I want to see them removed.

planned development

Change happens, regardless of how much people whine. Its called progress if you like it and destruction if you don't. So make change happen for the better, we can work towards consensus and progress. Chugach Electric should have worked with the city and communities on this better. We can accomadate change and make a nice, livable city in the process. Zoning, height limitations, public notice, public dialogue, etc....business serves the public, governement should help facilitate that service, public runs the government. Make it happen.

Power Poles and Greed

All done for money. Progressive communities across the country go to great lengths to preserve natural beauty. It appears that Chugach Electric does whatever it wants regardless of its impact on the community and all for money. They are not good neighbors, should be embarassed at what they have done and rectify the situation instead of pathetically try to justify why. Too bad we don't have a choice or I'd switch, maybe that's part of the problem.

Very few drivers have heeded the 35 MPH speed zone signs installed in this construction area. Like the Lower 48

I think they are very obtrusive. Other than the beautiful mountains in the backdrop it reminds me of the lower 48 states. But then more and more it seems they are taking away what is so unique in Anchorage. The politicians and those who come from the lower 48 want to change it from a frontier town to a metropolitan type city.

If they like it so much they should stay where they came from. But then builders are also ruining Wasilla/Palmer; every stretch of land that housed beautiful trees is being used to build their ugly apartment buildings/condos. Just WHY are people so intent on changing Alaska?

Lower 48 states...

Most cities in the lower 48 states today bury their power lines. Alaska should do the same. The majority of any obtrusive and unattractive sites one sees in and around the rest of the country are billboards lining the roadways and sides of buildings. Just wait and that will be next in AK!

Chugach Electric Power Poles

Yes, it is too bad that the poles must be erected. But this is the price of progress and you can NEVER stop progress. I know that many people run to Alaska from the lower 48 in an effort to escape it, but inevitably it catches up. The flow of people to Alaska requires that homes and apartments be built to house them. If there was no demand, they would not be building the supply. Along with the housing demand, more power must be supplied and this requires highpower transmission lines which cannot be buried in that area, which was at one time a swamp. How many of you remember that area in the 60's? I grew up within a stones throw of that area. I look past the power poles and see the mountains. Now if people like Alaskapat want to live their lives like they were back in the 1800's they can always move to a bush community. But I don't think anyone really wants to do that as life was very hard back in those days; no sofa, TV, stereo, cell phone. They want their sofa, TV and room with a view too. Price of progress folks.

palmermt, Progress doesn't

palmermt, Progress doesn't have to be painful. We can have our TV and a view too. Chugach says it would increase the repair time if they buried the power line and, OK, I'll accept that. But there are other options.

For instance, the verticle spacing between the lines is HUGE. Surely that could be reduced, or at the very least the lines could continue to be horizontally placed. And there is nothing saying that both sets of lines have to be on the same poles. The new capacity can take a different route and that would allow the much lower profile poles that are currently there to be used.

This isn't really a question of if more lines are needed, but how Chugach chose to fulfil that need.

Going forward, I want to know how much it will cost me to have Chugach redo this project the right way.

Thank You

I agree with everything you had to say palmermt. I have come to these dicussion boards several times and all I hear is constant complaining about the lower 48. If there wasn't a lower 48 there would be no Alaska. Even further more, the things that really make Alaska beautiful are not found within the city limits. Not one time have I said wow I want to see more of Alaska , I think I'll drive around down town!?! I think once again I agree with palmermt, you need to go live in the bush and see how long you miss progress and technology. Even better, take all your die hard, tree hugging friends with you. Maybe then Anchorage can progress and become the up to date city it needs to be.

Excuse me???

If you are referring to me you need to listen up. I have been to the Bush many times. Tree hugger? NO, just don't want to see Anchorage look like a lower 48 city. YOU obviously are one of those "politically correct" ones invading Anchorage wanting to bring your ideas with you that don't even work here! Go hug a tree where you came from and if that is in Alaska, then use some common sense....you sound like a yuppie!

What in the world????

Ok People, I may not live in the same town but I have been down that road many times. I moved here from the "lower 48". Before I moved here I just assumed it was like all the rest of the 48 but my first time seeing the senic veiws (from the passenger side of the car) I about died! It is breathtaking. While progess will go on, There is no reason to destroy Alaska for it. So you want some big cities and want them to be modern yet rustic make a freakin compromise and learn to go about it other ways than just yap at a computer screen. Get out there and talk to the people in cahrge make a petition if you must. Please Don't think that this will change it. MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!! Heck send me the darn thing in fairbanks and i will sign it even! If you care do something dont just complain about this travisty adn burden on your eyes.

Bury the Lines

The power poles don't need to be erected. I don't believe there is any reason why we cannot bury our power lines up here like many states in the lower 48 do. It would preserve what little beauty is left in this city. These new power poles are hideous.

If it's not broke

I agree that progress has it's price, however I do not understand what these new poles are accomplishing that the old poles didn't. I live in this area and I don't see any new construction, or any comming up soon that would call for new lines. I think that this is a good time to use the old addage, "If it's not broken, don't fix it."
