UAA: Shyiak Is Still The Coach; He's Seeking A Green Card Again

UAA on its web site today posted a job opening for its head hockey coaching position, but don't jump to conclusions: Athletic director Steve Cobb emphasized Dave Shyiak remains on the job as bench boss.

Cobb said Shyiak, a Canadian citizen entering his fifth season as UAA head coach, is again applying to the U.S. Department of Labor for "permanent residency'' status -- that's commonly known as a "green card.'' As part of the process, UAA, which is sponsoring Shyiak's application, must conduct a national search.

"We are very happy with coach Shyiak's performance as our hockey coach, we are excited for the season and don't foresee any changes,'' Cobb said.

Shyiak, 42, is currently in the first year of a four-year contract extension he signed about a year ago. He said his intention is to remain UAA's head coach.

"This is a whole legal process for me and my family to ensure longtime security and to live in the U.S.,'' he said. "It's most important for me and my family.''

Shyiak is currently working under an H-1B specialty worker's permit. He said he believes that permit is valid through the length of his contract.

As for any candidates who apply for the job, Cobb said, the school will "review them and see if they do or do not meet criteria. We make a decision how to move forward.''

The posted position will remain open for 30 days, according to the job posting.

Shyiak and UAA previously applied for his permanent residency in 2006, but eventually removed the application, Cobb said.
