Orange bags dotted Anchorage's landscape May 3-10, 2008Have you noticed a difference along city streets, neighborhoods and highways? Please share your thoughts and ideas about how we can keep the city clean year round.
The 40th Annual Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup is complete and the transformation is phenomenal. City streets, neighborhoods look incredible!
The photo was taken after the Anchorage Chamber staff cleaned along the Boniface exit last week. I know many of you felt the same sense of pride my staff did when they got out last week. Across the Municipality, there was an elevated level of participation, nearly all of the 60,000 bags we ordered were distributed this year, and almost every single school from Eagle River to Whittier was involved.

We're half way through the 40th Annual Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup. Thank you to everyone who has already filled their Orange Bags with litter.
I have received a lot of nice comments from Super Sweeper Coordinators and area businesses. Everyone is enjoying the weather and taking pride in our city. One coordinator wrote, "The kids had a GREAT time cleaning up the school grounds and around Lake Otis area today. They wanted to stay out longer which is a good thing!"
Please share your comments here by posting a comment.
And thank you to those who have committed to cleaning in the coming days. Here's a look at how many people have pledged their time this week.

If you want to reduce your wait in line at Solid Waste Services (and are only hauling Orange Bags during Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup) then plan to visit a participating site Monday through Friday next week. Orange Bags are accepted free of charge May 3-10. Free residential loads (not in Orange Bags) are accepted May 3, 4 & 10 so expect longer lines on these days.
Recycling Area Closed During Free Dump Days at Regional Landfill
Due to the long lines, congestion and inability to get to the recycling containers, the recycling area will be closed off during May 3, 4 and 10. Recyclers can drop off their recycling during the week, May 5-9. SWS appreciates your understanding and cooperation.

It's hard to imagine that 24" of snow fell on Anchorage this past Friday. If you're thinkning that this will delay Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup - then think again.
The weather is working with us to clear what fell. Our Orange Bag Pick-Up Kick-Off is still a go for tonight at the Alsaka Wild home game. Starting tomorrow you can pick up your bags at 1 of 3 AT&T locations or at the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce.
And remember: The Clean Sweep Celebration is a RAIN OR SHINE event! So don't let a little Mother Nature stop you from getting our to cleanup Anchorage - or from joining us at the celebration.

Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell and his congressional campaign volunteers will take to the streets this afternoon (Thursday, April 24) for an early start on Anchorage’s Citywide Cleanup. You'll see them along Minnesota and the New Seward Highway. Parnell said he and volunteers will meet at the O’Malley/Old Seward Lowe’s at 3 p.m. and two crews will begin cleanup from International Airport Road south along Minnesota and from 36th Avenue south along the New Seward Highway. All volunteers are welcome.

What a stress relief... rip
Just snip the edge and tear... rip
Its okay... rip
They were an old pair of blue jeans... rip
No one will miss them... rip
They were dirty around the edges... rip
And starting to get a few holes... rip
Now braid the strands together... humming
Tie them up with the left over pieces... humming
Add a pocket to the front... humming
And voila!
