Alleged drunken driver charged with murder

An alleged drunken driver involved in a fatal car crash in January has been indicted on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter, according to the district attorney.

Lawrence Brewer, 39, is accused of killing cab driver Dale Allen Pokarney, 55, on Jan. 30 in a crash at the intersection of Arctic Boulevard and Fireweed Lane, prosecutors said. Brewer, who police say had a blood-alcohol level of more than .2, has also been charged with driving under the influence.

Third man arrested in home-invasion robbery

A man wanted in connection with a home-invasion robbery last year that left two wounded by gunshots was arrested Thursday night at a home in Wasilla, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Ath Som Chhay, 22, was arrested at the residence off Ella Mae Road about 8:30 p.m. and booked in the Anchorage jail on charges of robbery, assault and conspiracy to commit robbery, troopers said.

Three charged in home-invasion robbery

Three men have been charged in connection with a home-invasion robbery last spring that left two wounded by gunshots, according to police.

Lanolan Anderson, 35; Jack Espinoza, Jr. 28; and Ath Som Chhay, 22, were indicted Tuesday on charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and assault, police said.

The men are accused of raiding a home in a mobile home park at 1200 W. Dimond Blvd. on May 4, 2009, while the resident, Tupou Satini, was home with his five children, his brother and his brother’s girlfriend, according to police.

Police are seeking two associates of the “person of interest” in the Dimond Center shooting that left one man dead.

Police say they want to talk to Anthony Neal Williams, 23, and Warren Brooks, 31, in connection with the potential involvement of their associate, 28-year-old Terence Gray, in the Feb. 27 murder.

Edwing Matos, 29, was killed after being shot several times outside a barber shop in the crowded mall. The killer, wearing an Afro wig and a fake mustache, fled the scene in a blue and white 1989 Chevy Suburban.

Meth conspirator gets 43 months in prison

UPDATE: Amy Itta has been sentenced to 43 months in federal prison for her role in a methamphetamine conspiracy.

Here's the story were ran back in September:

Two people who were the victims of a home-invasion robbery that ended last May with gunfire have been hit with federal drug conspiracy charges.

Tupou Satini Jr., 31, and Amy Renee Itta, 23, are each charged in a federal indictment with plotting to receive a package from California containing 573 grams of crystal methamphetamine hidden in a pink Barbie Tough Trike box.

Satini's sister, Nanasi Kalala Satini, 24, was also charged as a co-conspirator. She told investigators the package was intended for both of her brothers, Tupou and "Tony, " whom Itta is dating.

Jailed man arrested on Outside murder charge

Anchorage police have arrested a man wanted for murder in connection with the death of a woman whose body was found in Colorado in 2006.

John Michael Angerer, 40, is being held on a charge of second-degree murder following his arrest last week, police said.

Police say the badly decomposed, naked body of Angela Wilds was discovered near a shallow grave southwest of Lyons in the South St. Vrain Canyon in Colorado on June 4, 2006.

Former candidate charged with assault

ANCHORAGE (AP) — A Fairbanks man who unsuccessfully ran for the state House two years ago has been charged with felony assault after Alaska State Troopers say he choked a woman during a drive to Anchorage.

Schaeffer Cox, 26, was arrested Monday and charged with second-degree assault involving domestic violence.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that a warrant was issued and Cox turned himself in Monday afternoon. He was booked at the Fairbanks Correctional Center. He posted $3,500 bail and was released.

Messages left for Cox at phone numbers listed on his campaign Web site were not returned Tuesday.

Woman causes ruckus on jet, arrested in Anchorage

A Japanese woman in an uproar on a trans-Pacific flight caused the jet to divert to Anchorage and forced pilots to jettison some 70,000 pounds of fuel to make the landing, according to court documents.

Fumi Hirakawa, 42, has been jailed in Anchorage on a felony charge of interfering with a flight crew since the Feb. 12 incident.

According to an FBI affidavit filed in court, Hirakawa was aboard a Delta Airlines flight from Tokyo to New York when, about 45 minutes into the flight, she began accosting a flight attendant offering beverage service.

Flight attendants tried to calm her, but Hirakawa continued screaming profanities in Japanese and separately hitting four flight attendants before being handcuffed and seat belted in her seat, according to the FBI. She continued to struggle and unbuckled her seat belt several times, prompting flight attendants to set up a 30-minute rotation to watch her, the FBI said.

Strip club owner, cocaine dealer, loses business

The owner of PJs strip club has been sentenced to one year of home confinement and time served for his conviction of maintaining a drug-involved premise, according to the U.S. attorney.

Hallie Dean McGinnis, 66, has already been in custody for 2 1/2 months since pleading guilty to the charge, prosecutors said. As a result of the conviction, he will also lose the strip club and its liquor license.

Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Thoreson said in a statement that McGinnis used the Spenard landmark nightclub as a front to distribute cocaine, both through his employees and himself.

Troopers uncover major pot grow at Wasilla home

Alaska State Troopers have seized more than 500 plants and $82,000 in cash from a commercial growing operation in Wasilla.

The Mat Su Drug Unit also seized guns, vehicles and growing equipment following the search on Monday of the Wasilla home of Trace Thoms, 46, and his wife, Jennifer Thoms, 35, troopers said.

Investigators found 511 plants weighing 214 pounds — for an estimated dry weight of roughly 36 pounds — as well as growing equipment and processed marijuana, troopers said.

They also seized $82,945 in cash, two guns, a Ford F-250, a Volvo front-end loader, a large enclosed utility trailer, five snowmachines and an ATV, troopers said.

Naukati man beaned with skateboard, then jailed

A Naukati man involved in a series of violent encounters was arrested after cutting himself with a chain saw chain and getting hit in the head with a skateboard, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Richard Pitcher, 22, was charged with fourth-degree assault and misconduct involving drugs following the incident Friday afternoon, troopers said.

Officers in Klawock were summoned to Naukati about 3:30 p.m. to a report that Pitcher was in front of the general store, screaming and bleeding from both arms, throwing up and refusing to accept medical attention, troopers said.

Troopers got on scene about an hour later and found Pitcher at a nearby home off Heather Street.

Bethel cold-case murder solved, troopers say

A Bethel man has been charged with murder in the death of a woman whose body was found more than three years ago, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Carl Fox Jr., 51, was arrested Thursday on a warrant charging him with second-degree murder in the death of 40-year-old Agnes Evan, who was found dead in brush on Dec. 5, 2006.

Police in Bethel initially said Evan appeared to have died of hypothermia, but an autopsy later determined her death was caused by blunt-force trauma to the abdomen.

Evan’s death was one of two that hit the short-staffed Bethel Police Department in December that year, prompting an outcry for assistance as months passed and the cases remained unsolved.

Teen admits guilt in abuse of 6-year-old

FAIRBANKS (AP) — A 17-year-old Fairbanks boy has pleaded guilty to molesting a 6-year-old girl.

As part of a plea agreement, Jabez Woody will be sentenced in July to 15 years in prison with 10 years suspended. He will be on probation for another 15 years and must register as a sex offender.

Woody surrendered to authorities last summer. According to charging documents, he told Alaska State Troopers the 6-year-old wanted to have sex with him and it was "all her idea."

Teens who are at least 16 years old can be charged as adults if they sexually abuse someone younger than 13.

Superior Court Judge Douglas Blankenship said Thursday there needs to be an emphasis on rehabilitation, given Woody's age.

Ketchikan man gets jail time on drug charge

ANCHORAGE (AP) — A 48-year-old Ketchikan man will serve 6 1/2 years in a federal prison for trafficking methamphetamine.

U.S. District Court Judge Ralph Beistline sentenced Rodolfo Lastimosa, who was convicted of nine trafficking counts in December.

Federal prosecutors say Lastimosa sold the drug by hand, and also mailed the drug through the postal service.

Man accused of killing father charged with murder

A Kongiganak man who shot and killed his father this week has been jailed on a charge of murder, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Gary E. David, 30, was charged with first-degree murder following his father’s death Tuesday night, troopers said.

The Village Public Safety Officer in Kongiganak called troopers about 11:45 p.m. Tuesday to report David was in his home and fired a gun, troopers said. The officer went inside and found Kenneth David, 64, dead.

Troopers say the younger David fatally shot his father in the chest with a rifle, which he was still holding.

The officer talked David into putting the weapon down and surrendering. David put the rifle down but struggled with the officer briefly before being arrested, troopers said.

Sheep hunters guilty of wasting three animals

A sheep hunter and his guide who killed three sheep, leaving meat from all to waste, have pleaded guilty to charges of wanton waste and evidence tampering, according to Alaska State Troopers. Here's the press release they sent out this afternoon--

At the conclusion of an investigation conducted by Alaska Wildlife Troopers and National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers, two men were sentenced in Glennallen District Court in connection with an illegal hunt of three Dall sheep last summer. On Jan. 26, 2010, guide Justin Norberg, 36, formerly of Anchorage, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to aiding or committing wanton waste during a Dall sheep hunt in Game Management Unit 12, near the end of Nebesna Road. Kale A. Trangmore, 30, a hunter from Wasilla, pleaded guilty and was sentenced on Dec.7, 2009 to the charge of attempted tampering with physical evidence. The investigation began on Aug. 14, 2009 after three Dall sheep were taken illegally near Cabin Creek within the Wrangell-St. Elias National Preserve.

Back-to-back burglaries thwarted by homeowners

Two Anchorage men were arrested this week after a pair of back-to-back botched burglaries.

Brenton Kehoe, 20, and Gilberto Gutierrez, 18, were arrested at a home on West 31st Avenue after police rushed to the scene of the second burglary report inside of a half hour. Gutierrez was in the driveway. Kehoe was arrested in a bedroom where a child was sleeping, police said.

“They got all the way in the houses and people just sensed that somebody was there,” police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker said. “In each house, it was the lady of the house that was awakened.”

It began about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 2200 block of Arctic Circle. Judith Powell woke to find a strange man snooping around the bedroom and bathroom and woke her husband, Elisha Powell, police said.

Sleetmute man charged with attempted murder

A Sleetmute man who attacked another person with a sharp-edged weapon early Wednesday was charged with attempted murder, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Colten Evan Zaukar, 19, is also facing charges of first- and fourth-degree assault, misconduct involving weapons, criminal mischief, vehicle theft and underage drinking, troopers said.

In a statement, troopers in Aniak said they were summoned to Sleetmute about 12:20 a.m. to a report of a man who had been attacked with either a hatchet or a knife. The victim was taken to Anchorage for treatment of his injuries, troopers said.

No further details were provided on the assault. A troopers spokeswoman said she was unable to find out more Wednesday.

Homeless man robbed of jacket, shoes and cash

A homeless man was beaten and robbed of his jacket and shoes by a carload of people who offered him a ride in Mountain View, according to Anchorage police.

The victim, Alfonzo Cano, reported he had been walking near Thompson and Hoyt streets about 8 p.m. Tuesday when a light-colored Chevrolet Suburban pulled up and its six occupants offered him a ride to the Red Apple Market on Bragaw Street, police said.

Cano, who was intoxicated, said he got into the back seat but the driver stopped after going only a block. The occupants then pulled him from the vehicle, beat him and stole his leather jacket, shoes and cash, police said.

Driver slows fire truck, forces it off road

A Willow fire truck responding to a structure fire slid off the road after trying to pass another vehicle whose driver failed to yield to its flashing lights and siren, according to Alaska State Troopers.

There were no injuries in the incident, though troopers are investigating why the tanker could not get a clear path to its destination.

Troopers say they were called to Mile 84 of the Parks Highway about 11:30 a.m. Monday and found Jake Griffin, 32, had been driving the tanker with 3,000 gallons of water north along the highway en route to a cabin fire at Mile 92. The truck’s lights had been flashing and sirens wailing, troopers said.
