Gina and I had to grab lunch on the run yesterday. We don’t eat out a lot. But when we do, we’re pretty faithful to our favorite places.
We’ll venture out and try something new occasionally -- how else do you find a new "favorite" place? But, generally, if we love the place we go back again and again.
Here are our most recent five restaurants, all of which were wonderful. (The list includes a first-timer.) While it’s not a Top 5 list, you won’t go wrong eating at any of these places.
Yak and Yeti: This was our stop on Wednesday. It was wonderful as always. The place is billed as a "Himalayan restaurant," with Indian, Tibetan and Nepalese dishes. We went with the channa masala and the baigan bharta. The restaurant is at 3301 Spenard Road, which is a bit outside the downtown area for visitors, but it is well worth the effort to get there.
Bear Tooth Theatrepub: We stopped at the movie theater Sunday night for Day 3 of the Telluride Mountainfilm tour (all three days were sold out; we tried to go on Friday but couldn’t get tickets). The focus of our visit was the films, but one of the best things about the Bear Tooth is the dinner-and-a-movie concept. We went with the nachos and a bean and rice burrito. Thankfully, the food came before the movie started; it can be a challenge to eat those messy but tasty nachos in the dark. The theatrepub is also in the Spenard neighborhood at 1230 W. 27th Ave.
Lahn Pad Thai: When we dine out, this is our most likely destination. We love Thai food and we love Lahn Pad Thai, 2101 Abbott Road in South Anchorage. While we were on vacation in Texas for a week, we ate at a couple Thai restaurants. Sadly, they couldn’t hold a piece of lemongrass compared to our local place. The food is always fresh, the service friendly and it's reasonably priced.
Snow City Café: This is our breakfast hangout. The downtown restaurant also serves a great lunch, but it is the eggs, grilled tofu and hash browns that pull us in. It is popular, so it can get crowded and slow, especially on the weekends. We usually try to hit it on a weekday morning. (1034 W. Fourth Ave.)
Sushi Ya: This was the one first-timer on this list. I have a co-worker who says this is his favorite sushi place in town (and there are lots of them to pick from). Now I know why. We got a couple rolls and some nigiri. While I got it to-go, the restaurant was pleasant and we’ll be sure to go back. Again, not super-convenient for downtown guests with its 1111 E. Dimond Blvd. location.
