Earlier this week I met two couples vacationing here from Georgia. They're pretty lucky.
By the time I talked with them on Wednesday, they'd already visited Hatcher Pass. Thursday they were headed for a drive along Turnagain Arm and a trip to see Whittier. Today they were scheduled to take the train to Seward, where they would leave on a cruise Saturday evening.
They packed quite a bit into a few days in Southcentral Alaska.
And the weather was outstanding. If they had come a week earlier, they would have been shivering. As it was, they were basking in record-warm temperatures and bright sunshine.
I wish that kind of vacation for everyone. Of course, at some point it will rain and be cloudy and cool. But not this weekend.
If you're out this weekend, watch out for the animals. Moose are giving birth to their young, and mother moose are quite protective. Also, bears have been out around town. In fact, black bears have been causing trouble and one was shot and killed Wednesday night. Also the DNR closed a portion of the Turnagain Arm Trail between Potter and McHugh Creek because of bear activity.
Apparently, the animals are out enjoying the warm weather too.
