Magnificent moonrises

It's hard to resist the magnetic draw of the moon sometimes. Over the last couple days I've been darting around town trying to capture its dramatic rise over classic Anchorage scenes. Conditions have been just right: a full or nearly full moon rising at sundown in a clear sky. Out at Earthquake Park Tuesday, it seemed to come up over the Port of Anchorage just after sundown. The pink sky reflected in the open water between ice floes. On Wednesday evening, I made a few pictures from the deck overlooking downtown across from West High School, then raced down to the surface of Westchester Lagoon to position it between two office towers as my fingers froze.

I'm not the only one. I've seen a handful of other photographers trying to capture the scene as well. If you're in a sharing mood, consider posting them to our Reader Winter Photos gallery.
