Community Bulletins

The Alaska Bulletin Board is a place for announcements and items of interest to the community that reach the Daily News but that may or may not become news stories prepared by our journalists. The content usually originates with press releases from government agencies or non-profit organizations. The Bulletin Board is not intended to be a comprehensive calendar or a news report, but rather useful information our editors consider to be of sufficiently broad and immediate interest to publish here.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Victoriah Haakenson of Anchorage has been crowned Miss Preteen National
Sweetheart at the 2012 America’s National Teenager Scholarship Program, a program for gifted young women ages 9-25 hosted this year in San Antonio, TX.

The homecoming weekend will begin with her arrival at 5pm on Thursday August 9, 2012 at the
Ted Stevens International Airport and a reception following at 6:30pm at the home of Jon and Lori
Walker in South Anchorage. (13100 Elmhurst Circle) Victoriah will be participating in both Governor’s Picnics this weekend as well as other events including the Old Navy/Dimond Center event with Alaska Athletics.

Victoriah is the 10 year old daughter of Keith & Amie Haakenson of Anchorage. She will be in the 5th grade at Rabbit Creek Elementary and participates in the Ignite Program and volunteers with the Life Skills Program. Victoriah is a level three competitive cheerleader with Alaska Athletics, formerly Denali Cheer and volunteers with many organizations in the community.

Contestants who attend ANTSO are among the brightest in the country, having won their state
representation through academic, community service, interview and onstage competitions.

“America’s National Teenager was founded in 1970 upon the principles of celebrating a young woman’s
smarts and big heart. Therefore, while the world around us has changed, our company has not. We still focus on the female’s academic potential, contribution to community, and the ideals and power that women have, at any age, to make a difference,” states CEO and Owner, Jenny Telwar.

The 2012 National event in San Antonio, TX will consist of several days in competition and fun city events like a Celebration Party at the Alamo. Winners will walk away with more than $40,000 in scholarships for college along with various other prizes.

“ANTSO truly promotes a positive and enriching experience for all young women involved and their
families. While each young woman competes for several thousands in scholarships, she also gets to
spend quality time in positive, self-esteem building activities with her family. It’s a win-win for all
involved,” states Telwar.

Parents, young women and educators interested in any of ANTSO’s programs, at either the state or
national level, are encourage to contact the America’s National Teenager office at 615 405 5107 or visit its website at www.nationalteen.com
