UAA anthropology colleagues enjoy Denali Highway adventure

Running the Denali Highway: A support vehicle and runner on the road in early July.Running the Denali Highway: A support vehicle and runner on the road in early July.Anthropologists frequently go to annual conferences to share research papers and listen to the work of others. But sometimes those sessions are long, hard on the backside, and leave room for some creativity for how to incorporate movement into a sedentary experience.

UAA's anthropology contingent invented and have hosted nano-marathons (2.62 mile runs) to work the conference-going kinks out. Their last one was this past March at the 39th annual conference of the Alaska Anthropological Society in Seattle.

And this July, the group, who label themselves the "Scampering Hominids Anthropology Running Troupe" raised the bar. They ran the Denali Highway, for fun! That's 135 miles, two relay teams, two support vehicles, covering 33 miles a day. They even had team T-shirts.
Gorgeous scenery: Runners were blessed with two sunny days, two rainy days, and zero bears.Gorgeous scenery: Runners were blessed with two sunny days, two rainy days, and zero bears.
Read a short account of their adventure here.

Two of the runners brought some very nice camera gear and captured the beautiful scenery of the central slice of
Alaska. Marianne Pederson's images are here and Aubrey Morrison's images are here.

Enjoy!
