This week singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile returns to Alaska, and Daily News correspondent Paul Flahive spoke with her about her decision to drop out of high school at 16 years old and her rise to prominence. Read the story on the cover of today’s issue of Play magazine.

If you haven’t been to Crow’s Nest atop the Hotel Captain Cook, things have changed in that neck of the woods. For one, former Jack Sprat chef Rebeun Gerber took over as chef de cuisine at the Nest about six months ago. Josh Niva spoke with Gerber about his philosophy to cooking and trying to find the right work/ play balance.

Desert soul

Fun and games
The family-friendly Bear Paw Festival continues this weekend, with carnival rides, games, exhibits, food vendors and competitions. Festivities begin 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday in downtown Eagle River. Visit bearpawfestival.org for full schedule of events.
