It’s another big week for local music, with a couple of relatively new Anchorage bands playing CD release shows. Play contributor David Harper spoke with The Super Saturated Sugar Strings about the band’s new album, “Harmonic Toast” (see my review here), and plans to tour the Lower 48 this summer.

College rock
Local band Historian has been making waves this past year with a dark, Goth-tinged brand of indie-pop, and the quartet celebrates the release of its first album, “Dream Crusher,” Saturday with Ghost Hands and Alex the Lion. The show kicks off 10 p.m. at S Lounge, $5, and will be the band’s last until the end of summer.
It only takes one
What do Merilee Rush, Boy George, Radiohead, Little Eva and your kidneys have in common? Well, the musicians all had exactly one No. 1 hit, and you only need one kidney — so don’t be shy about donating the spare. The Arctic Sirens wrap a seventh season of Cabarets with a program of one-hit wonders, and proceeds will benefit the National Kidney Foundation. Hocus pocus
Dubbed the Bay Area’s best magician by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, Chin-Chin brings his stage show to Alaksa for a couple of shows at the Anchorage Community Theatre, 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, $12.50. Visit actalaska.org for info.
Date night
Tap Root might feel a little like high school Friday, when the venue hosts the Spenard Prom. Emma Hill, Mike Gorder, Hawkins Wright Ghost Hands and The Young Guns and D.J. Alex the Lion will perform while attendees vote for the prom king and queen. All proceeds benefit Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. 9 p.m., $10-$12. Visit taprootalaska.com for info.
