A jury today convicted a man of calling in fake bomb threats to a downtown probation office in order avoid a surprise urine test, police say.

The first phony threat emptied the probations office at 800 A Street on Nov. 22, police say. Bryant K. Brown, 44, was on probation on a drug charge when he learned of the urine analysis and made the call.

The drug test was rescheduled for the next day. Brown called in a bomb threat that day too, police say.

“I cannot think of any other reason why he would have called the bomb threats in on those days other than his desire to avoid that urinalysis test," said Lt. David Parker, a police spokesman.

Parker said he doesn't know if Brown was ever successfully tested.

Convicted in Bomb Threat

Bryant K. Brown 44, was convicted in jury trial on 4-25-12 on 2 counts of Terroristic Threatening 2nd degree. The jury found that on 11-22-11 at 1505 hours and on 11-23-11 at 1539 hours he telephoned in bomb threats to the Alaska Department of Corrections Adult Probations Office (800 A Street). In both instances the building was evacuated and searched for the presence of explosives, but in neither case were any explosive devices found.

Working in conjunction with Alaska State Trooper investigators, the threats were traced back to Brown. Brown was on probation for a prior drug charge and had a history of missing his appointments with his probation officer. Brown was scheduled for a surprise urine analysis on 11-22-11 but the test was cancelled due to the bomb threat and subsequent evacuation of the DOC building. He was called in to repeat the urine analysis test the following day on 11-23-11 but this test was also cancelled due to the second bomb threat.

Bryant K. Brown is scheduled for sentencing for 8-6-12.
