Goaltender Ty Conklin of Anchorage cleared re-entry waivers today and will start for the Detroit Red Wings tonight on the road against the New York Islanders.
Conklin, 36 at the end of this month, is the only Alaska goalie to ever play in the NHL (still, his backup tonight is Jordan Pearce of Anchorage, who has done back-up duty in the world's best league, but not yet been in net). This will be Conklin's first NHL start since being yanked Feb. 2. Lately, he's been at AHL Grand Rapids, where he has gone 8-4-0 with a 2.40 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.
In Detroit this season, Conklin is 3-5-0 with a 3.40 and .878.
In his NHL career, he's 94-66-22 and 17 shutouts, 2.68, .906.
Conklin will start tonight after being summoned because No. 1 goalie Jimmy Howard has a sore groin.
