Around The College Rinks

Wisconsin junior defenseman Alev Kelter will play for a second consecutive Division national championship Sunday after the Badgers beat Boston College, 6-2, in a semifinal today in Duluth, Minn.

Kelter furnished an assist and a +1 rating in the victory. Last season, she was +2 in a 4-1 championship win over Boston University in Erie, Pa.

The Badgers will face Minnesota in the championship game. Today, Alev's twin sister, Derya, was not in the lineup.

Alaskans will be part of the Division III championship mix too. Defenseman Kayla Parsons of Fairbanks was in the lineup for Norwich today in a 4-3 OT semifinal win over Gustavus Adolphus. Norwich on Saturday plays host RIT in the championship game.

In the WCHA, Denver, which won its quarterfinal over Michigan Tech in overtime (Jason Zucker goal) on Thursday, today beat defending national champion Minnesota-Duluth 4-3 in double overtime in St. Paul, Minn. Caught some highlights on NBC Sports during intermission of a Hockey East semifinal and Mr. Between-The-Benches, Pierre McGuire, was ripping on Pioneers goaltender Sam Brittain for two goals he surrendered, saying he really needs to stop those two shots -- not to put too fine a point on it, but both shots in question were right up under the crossbar, and evidently (this was before the DU game started overtime) McGuire didn't note Brittain's 47 saves in regulation. Dude made 67 saves in the game -- an apology from McGuire should be forthcoming.

Almost forgot -- the Pioneers' game-winning strike 8:14 into double OT came from one Zach Larraza (and, hey, he's probably never heard of you, either), a freshman who scored (this is awsome) his first college goal.

The Pioneers on Saturday will play North Dakota for the Broadmoor Cup after the Sioux fell behind Minnesota by three goals, then rattled off six unanswered, including five in the third period for a 6-3 win.
