Dog Blog

The Dog Blog is a community of ordinary dog lovers who have come together to discuss our extraordinary dogs. Each Monday, a new topic is introduced. If you've got an opinion, share it. If not, look for the current "anything goes" topic and introduce a discussion of your own. On Fridays, weigh in about your training questions and successes.

(Late) Friday training talk -- anything new to report?

I'm a day late on this weekly ritual, but what's new with your pack when it comes to training? Any successes to report? Setbacks?

I've had some good progress this week on some issues I've been having with my trio. Lucy, the Chessie, was finishing her bully stick first and harassing the Yorkies for theirs. Solved it by giving her an interactive toy instead, stuffed with treats and placed in a kennel.

I was delighted to discover she's kennel trained. She's perfectly happy in there, though I do need a slightly larger one. In fact, I can open the door and she'll stay there -- even return to it when she wants some peace.

Our other success is Jillie finally mastered the sneeze trick. It took much longer to teach it to her because she's not the fetcher Eddie was when he learned it. But persistence, 10-15 minutes a day, paid off. I can now sneeze and she'll bring me a tissue. Well, she'll at least pluck it out of the box and toss it in my direction. ;p

The toughest part was finding a way to work with Jillie with Eddie in the house. I typically don't kennel him, so I just snuck into the bathroom to work with Jillie. Eddie knew what was going on -- he'd be scratching at the door. But it gave us the time we needed away from him.

All in all, a good week. :)
