Refugees debut Alaska song in Anchorage Concert

When the folk/rock trio Refugees performed in Anchorage two years ago, they promised they'd have an Alaska song when they came back. On their return to Sydney Laurence Theatre in Anchorage Saturday night, they sang the song for what they said was the first time - or at least as much as they could remember. (It appears to be a work in progress.) The three verse song is a minor key chantey about Captain James Cook's expedition to present-day Anchorage. The words are sung by three different characters, Cook, a sailor and a Native watching from shore. The chorus goes:

"Turn again. Turn again. Turn around hard.
It's a long way from London to Turnagain Arm."

The crowd greeted the words with appreciative applause.

Refugee Cindy Bullens said the song was written about a week ago when the group was in Calgary.

The group performs on Sunday at Vagabond Blues in Palmer.
