Saltarello, a period music ensemble featuring Laura Koenig, Dawn Lindsay, Linda Marsh-Ives and other notable Anchorage musicians, will present a concert of late Renaissance and Baroque music at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Lake Otis and Tudor.
The program includes music by Schmelzer, Schmikerer and Scarlatti – what a lineup! (That’s Alessandro Scarlatti, by the way.) Plus pieces by Telemann and Byrd.
A saltarello is an Italian dance in triple time with a “little hop” on the first beat. Originally it followed a slower and more serious dance, like a pavanne, and incorporated music from the preceding dance - kind of a chorographed tweak to the nose of the formal and beautiful court dances, a musical incarnation of the court jester.
