Photos on leaves

Many photographers take pictures of plants - but Adam Ottavi Schiesl has an exhibit of photographs ON plants.

Scheisl's show is on display this month at Fairbanks' Well Street Art Company. It includes more than 70 photos made over the past three years. Some are ambrotypes, an antique technique from the dawn of photography using glass plates.

Others, like the untitled picture above, are much more experimental chlorophyll prints. These are direct positive prints made on a living plant leaf that is then dried, mounted and framed.

"The chlorophyll prints are really best viewed in person," Schiesl says. "The technique is quite simple but the results are always dramatic."
