Rural blog

The Village is a Daily News blog about life and politics in rural Alaska. Its main author is ADN reporter Kyle Hopkins. Come here for breaking news on village issues, plus interviews, videos and photos. But that's just part of the story. We want to feature your pictures, videos and stories, too. Think of The Village as your bulletin board. E-mail us anything you’d like to share with the rest of Alaska -- your letters to the editor, the photos of your latest hunt or video of your latest potlatch. (We love video.)

A road-side memorial in Hoonah

I spent some time talking to Hoonah Police Chief John Millan yesterday as he stood along Front Street -- the same spot where two of his officers were shot and killed days before.

His voice quaked as he recalled arriving at the scene minutes after one of the officer's mother called "officer down" over her son's police radio. While the chief talked on his cell phone, Hoonah residents stopped to ask how he was doing. To give him hugs.

When two school kids approached, I could only hear half the conversation:

“No I’m fine thanks. I appreciate it. I appreciate it.”

...

“You guys doing OK?”

...

“I know you liked Tony and Matt, fellas, I know. Things going good at school?”

Millan today forwarded these pics of the roadside memorial to Sgt. Anthony Wallace and Officer Matthew Tokuoka. Photos courtesy of Hoonah Police Department:
