Bear cub gets caught in a salmon dipnet

A black bear cub whose family was sniffing around a chicken coop got himself caught in a dipnet at a Hillside home this week, prompting competing rescue attempts by mother and homeowner. The homeowner used his truck to pull the net back from the tree line, but the growling momma bear wouldn't let him close enough to cut the net. Eventually, the man uses his pickup to pin the net on the ground, allowing the mother bear to rip the cub free from the net and pull her cub into the woods. ~ Video courtesy Dane Havard

Why is it that every time a story like this happens there is a myriad of "Why the hek ya let em get in yer yard..." "Bear free yada yada"

You people amaze me. It's like having a traffic accident and comment on how we need a vehicle free intersection. Bears live among us, deal with it or move to Southern California.

Cooter

"Why not just shoot em?" Calm down Cooter - not everyone wants Alaska to be the Alabama of the North.

SHOOT THE BEARS!!!

Why not just shoot em? I'm sure they'll be back to this guy's yard and/or some other yard if they aren't shot.

Why would you have a chicken

Why would you have a chicken coop on hillside and not have it fenced in? This is just as bad as leaving garbage out, (and if you pay attention, there's open garbage cans in the yard...). This isn't like a moose dieing in your yard and having bears coming in to check it out, the home owners created this bear encounter through their own negligence.

Yes yes...negligence! Lets

Yes yes...negligence! Lets charge them like criminals for allowing a one in a million encounter with a fish net to happen! And lets find a way to gripe about seemingly any news story regardless of how harmless the outcome is!

This is what I like to see!

This is what I like to see! Why can't ya all just appreciate this little item instead of gripping about bear free yards, put your nets away etc. It is cute, it is relaxing and it IS warm and fuzzy. These men know how to live in harmony with the area they love. NO threat because these men are smart

Lucky ending

Luckily there is a good ending to this story. The man could have injured the cub when draging the net. This would not have happened if we keep our yard "bear free".

Glad there was a happy ending to this little bear's adventure! I agree - you KNOW momma was scolding him/her and the other cub was making fun of it!

Nice work, but if the nets

Nice work, but if the nets were put away better, probably would have just had some bears poking around, instead of snagged up in it. glad it worked out for all involved.

Just my $0.02.

Yes the nets

My god your right! And they should have built their home 30 feet in the air to avoid spiders, carpenter ants and other stupid humans!

Makes me realize

that maybe if you live on the hillside where bears used to be able to roam freely, you shouldn't have chicken coops. Seems just as dumb as leaving your trash laying all over the place.

Great thinking!

I'm happy to see the little guy/girl didn't get hurt. You can just hear the mama bear scolding him/her all they way into the tree line..."Don't you ever do that again!!!"
LOL

thanks

Many thanks to the homeowner for handling this so efficiently and well. Let's home this scared the mom enough that she stays away from chicken coops.
