A friend send me a link over the weekend to this Tundra Telegraph post by Elizabeth Medicine Crow, of the Alaska Native Policy Center, describing a commercial parody or skit called "Cash for Tlingits" that played on the popular KWHL Bob & Mark morning show.
KTVA did a story on Tuesday quoting Anchorage Media Group General Manager Dennis Bookey, who criticized the clip but said he had no intention of pulling the DJs off the air. Meetings on the topic were scheduled for Wednesday, the story says.
UPDATE: I recently asked host Bob Lester how yesterday's meeting went. Here's what he said:
"It was a great meeting that truly changed everything. The Native leaders in attendance were so thoughtful and forgiving and wise. We are moving forward from this day on to build a better partnership between the Bob & Mark show and the Native community. I was honored and blessed to be a part of this meeting. To say it was an eye opener does not do it justice. I Love Alaska and all the poeple who live here. I want to use the power of our show to celebrate our diversity, not build walls because of our differences. You would have been amazed at the unity created in that short 3-hour meeting. It was awesome! We have some work to do...but it will be worth the effort."
So what does the actual radio skit say? I couldn't find it online -- send me a link if you have one -- but other past Bob & Mark skits are posted to a fansite, including:
-- "That's What I Call Native Music"
-- "Village Oral Hygiene."
-- "Athabascan State Song."
Here are excerpts from Bob & Mark's "That's What I Call Native Music" and "Village Oral Hygiene," which appeared in 2007, according to the Web site:
NOTE: Anchorage Media Group has asked us to remove the audio excerpts that were posted on this blog item. I had also linked to a fan site, www.bobandmarksuck.com, which has long posted the full-length clips and many others. When you go to that site now, there's nothing there.
