TBA keeps on pushing the boundaries of what local theatre can do here in Anchorage. They've capped off an ambitious season (including the reflective parable The Magic Little Snowman and the incredible Mother Goose on the Loose) with a stellar performance of a really challenging musical.
I really never was a big fan of Sound of Music. It is high praise indeed that this production totally made me rethink that. The show really focused on the beauty of music. The heart of the play is Maria's relationship to the Von Trapp kids, and I really had a sense of the joy of learning about music, of discovering its basic elements and of having the sort of once-in-a-lifetime teacher who can impart the basics while at the same time keeping open the doors of artistic passion.
In a sense, this is a perfect show for a company like TBA, which continues to work the fine line between being an organization that teaches theater skills to all ages and one that provides high caliber entertainment for the public. Hopefully some of the folks who've been paying top dollar for all the big touring shows that have come through Anchorage (Annie, Lion King, etc etc blah blah blah) will come see Sound of Music and realize how much magic this community is making on its own.
