Mariano Gonzales' installtion artwork, titled “Nine Flags, One Shroud & One Question” - which came down earlier than scheduled after sparking controversy at Alaska Pacific University - will be reinstalled at Out North, 3800 Debarr Road. An opening reception will take place at 5 p.m. on Feb. 19. The show will remain on display through March 15.
A press release reads:
"This installation consists of nine U.S. flags and a wall on which to write.
With this installation the artist is asking his fellow citizens to consider the human cost of these wars, and to express an opinion, in their own hand, in the light of day, about the reason for these wars.
"Mariano Gonzales’ 'Nine Flags, One Shroud & One Question' was first installed in APU’s Conoco Phillips Gallery in October of 2009 until it was deemed objectionable and removed early. Plans at that time were to swap the installation with one in APU’s Carr-Gottstein Gallery. However, Gonzales found the space’s lighting and layout were not suitable to the recreate the solemnity of the exhibition."
