Visual or performing artists: MTS Gallery now accepts proposals for visual art exhibitions and performance art events. For submission guidelines go to mtsgallery.wordpress.com/hours.

Art Educator Grants: Awards may be used to defray the costs of tuition, fees, room and board, travel and other costs associated with advanced arts study or residences; purchase of materials and equipment to create a new body of work. The grant awards are up to $3,000 for K-12 visual & performing arts educators whose primary responsibility is arts instruction, have been teaching a minimum of 3 years, & are permanently assigned full or part time in an Alaskan school. Call for Art: Multi-media with the theme “Snow, Sweat and Tears.” Entry deadline is January 31. $2-$5 fee per entry. The show will open with a reception on February 6. Girdwood Center for Visual Arts, Olympic Mountain Circle. (783-3209).

Intergenerational Arts Contest: Artists of any age throughout Alaska can participate in creating paintings, video, drawing, collages, photography, essays, poems or quilting. $2,000 in cash prizes. Categories include visual and textile arts, literary arts, and video and photography. Deadline for entries is Feb. 12, 2010. (276-1059, opagak.com).

Railroad Art: The selected artist will be commissioned to create artwork for the 2011 Alaska Railroad official print, poster, lapel pin and other gifts and materials. The artist will be paid $3,000, and be given 10 artist proofs and 20 posters. The artist must agree to participate in sale-and-signing events in Anchorage and in Fairbanks. The Alaska Railroad will pay for the artist’s travel expenses. The Alaska Railroad retains all and exclusive rights to the artwork. Mail or deliver the sketch to 445 West 9th Avenue, Anchorage, AK 99501. Deadline February 19, 2010. A selection will be made by the end of March 2010.

LITERARY ARTS

15th Annual Statewide Poetry Contest, sponsord by the Fairbanks Atrts Association, is seeking submissions FROM ALASKANS ONLY. Get information at www.fairbanksarts.org. Winners will be announced on March 6.

Call for Women’s Stories: Alaska Women Speak. The theme for the Spring 2010 issue is “Reader’s/Writer’s Choice”. Call for Women’s Stories: Radical Arts for Women short story contest open to women living in Alaska. The fiction pieces must be between 250 and 5,000 words and contain some lesbian content. Each entry must contain a cover sheet with author’s name, address, phone number, e-mail, story title, and word count. Unpublished submissions only.
