Dog Blog

The Dog Blog is a community of ordinary dog lovers who have come together to discuss our extraordinary dogs. Each Monday, a new topic is introduced. If you've got an opinion, share it. If not, look for the current "anything goes" topic and introduce a discussion of your own. On Fridays, weigh in about your training questions and successes.

Should boarding facilities/vets provide 24-hour care for your dogs?

Would you prefer/demand that any boarding facility or vet who cares for your dog provide 24-hour supervision during their stay? I'm not sure of the policies of local boarding facilities -- I always assumed there was 24-hour care -- but I know many vets close the office overnight with dogs in their care. Take our poll.

I started thinking about this recently. Eddie's scheduled for his knee surgery tomorrow, and I was surprised to learn that the routine for such surgeries is for the dog to spend the night at the vet's office alone overnight, from 11 to 7. Call me overcautious, but I wasn't comfortable with that and decided to pay extra to have him transferred to Pet Emergency after the procedure, where he'll have supervision.

My reasoning for being cautious is Eddie not crate trained, has never had surgery before (since neutering), and has always had supervision beyond 5 hours or so while my wife and I are at work. Don't get me wrong, he's been in crates before and done fine. I wouldn't expect any problems. I just don't want to take an avoidable risks in this situation.
