Crepe expectations

After spending time cooking and living in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, Katrina Larson-Markiewicz moved back to Alaska and missed European dining – especially real crepes and Belgian waffles. She took matters into her own hands, opening La Petite Creperie (2210 E. Northern Lights Blvd.) a week ago.

The atmosphere inside the creperie is IKEA-inspired, with clean lines and a bright color palette. Local artwork is hung along the walls, and a large stone slab in the middle of the kitchen looks like it came straight from a country cottage in Denmark. The kitchen is stocked with a comforting mix of fresh cut produce and just-made batter and sauces.

The offerings are a mix sweet and savory and Larson-Markiewicz said the Thai chicken crepe ($9.75) is her biggest seller.

I ordered the most popular sweet on the menu, the chocolate banana crepe ($6.50). It was served warm and had a slight vanilla taste. Smooth chocolate was folded inside and was pleasantly punctuated by fresh banana, creating a sweet – but not overwhelming – treat.

The crepes are made in an open kitchen on the stone slab, and the ingredients are non-processed and organic when possible.

The restaurant is open, but still working out its kinks. A grand opening is planned for Tuesday, Dec. 1 and will include live local jazz music.
