Alaska Politics Blog

This is the place to talk about Alaska politics, state, local, national. Public life in the Last Frontier has rarely been more interesting -- a full slate of federal and state elections, the influence of former Gov. Sarah Palin, the usual hardball Alaska politics. Come here for news, tidbits and information, and join the discussion. We encourage lively debate, but please keep it civil and stay on point. Don't use profanity, make crude comments or attack other posters. Posts that violate the Terms of Use will be deleted. Repeat offenders will lose their ability to post comments.

Alaska political corruption

When the FBI raided state legislature offices in Aug. 2006, it publicly launched an investigation that ultimately reached the highest levels of Alaska politics, and continues to this day.

Odds and ends from Palinpalooza (Updated)

From David Hulen in Anchorage --

Some items (news and opinion) that caught our eye over the past 24 hours or so:

1. 10 Reasons That Sarah Palin Could Win the Republican Nomination (FiveThirtyEight.com) Excerpt:

She's tough to campaign against. Why? Because any perceived or real slight against Palin is taken by her supporters as an example of sexism, elitism, or media bias; just wait until Huckabee or Romney makes their first impolitic comment about Palin in a debate or an interview and watch the sparks fly.

2. The Sarah Palin-media co-dependency (Politco.com) Excerpt:

For Palin’s book sales, all press is good press. And for the press, Palin is all good for the bottom line.

“I think it’s a great symbiosis,” said Tina Brown, editor-in-chief of The Daily Beast. “Everybody is using everybody.”

3. From the Alaska Dispatch: A reading of "Going Rogue" by SP nemesis Andrew Halcro:

Here's part 2.

4. Politifact.com fact-tests claims in Palin book, complete with ratings on the Truth-O-Meter. They range from "true" to "half-true" to "false."

5. Hundreds line up for Sarah Palin book signing in Grand Rapids (Detroit Free Press)

By 7 a.m., the line had swelled to more than 1,500 people as Barnes & Noble employees wrapped orange wristbands around Palin fans' wrists.

Pamela Lincoln, 50, of Canton borrowed her father's snowmobile pants and boots, set up a chair at midnight and figured she was the warmest person in line.

It's been a year of firsts for Lincoln. She attended her first tea party in Plymouth this summer and today was her first overnight foray for a signature.

"This is someone who is going to be iconic in the history of the United States. How could I not come?" she said. "We have to get politically active and take the country back."

6. Between Palin and Palinism (Atlantic online)

What is Palinism? It is the suggestion that there is in Middle America a bubbling resentment against what is perceived as elitist snobbery against those who go to community college, shop at Walmart, view non-pet animals as food-in-waiting, read John Grisham novels and go to church on Sunday. It is not (or so I perceive it) a rebellion against affluence or superior education, but against what many in fly-over-land view as condescension and dismissiveness.

7. The Chicago Tribune's The Swamp reports on Palin's interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity, in which she describes where she gets her news: ""I read Newsmax and the (Mat-Su)) Frontiersman and Wall Street Journal and everything online,'' Palin says. "I absorb the news via many, many sources." In the same interview, Politco reports, Palin trashed what she called the "lamestream media."

8. The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz on media fascination/obsession with our former governor.

They just can't help themselves. Journalists are addicted to Sarah Palin. Some love to hate her, some love to love her, all love to dissect or defend her...

Palin is undeniably a crossover hit: a woman, a Republican, a politician, a hunter, a hockey mom, an Alaskan, a media critic, a cultural force, a creationist, the mother of a Down syndrome baby. There's something for everyone to argue about.

9. The L.A. Times opinion page gives Palin the pro-con treatment with columns by Matthew Continetti of the Weekly Standard (and author of "The Persecution of Sarah Palin") and ADN opinion columnist Michael Carey.

10. Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore's Letter from the Other Alaska. Excerpt:

I was born in Alaska; Sarah Palin was not. I don’t have a “Fargo” accent that sounds like I make casseroles with leftover tater tots and mushroom soup. Numerous brilliant, artistic, articulate and cultured citizens call Alaska home. On November 4, 2008, many in the Lower 49 got to shake their shoes of our Governor. They slept easier. Gone were the train wreck fantasies that kept them up at night; the 3am phone call and she, a heart beat away from the “nukular” codes. But for Alaskans, she was back, and we didn’t know what that would mean.

11. Sarah Palin Appearance Brings Oprah Winfrey Highest Rating in Two Years (NY Times blog)

12. A complaint about "Going Rogue" is its lack of an index. Blogger Marcus Baram remedies that (with no small amount of snark) at the Huffington Post. Slate has its own version.

There's plenty more on our Alaska Newsreader.
