The Alaska Aces, their roster jam-packed to overflowing, today released winger Moises Gutierrez of Anchorage, whose debut with the team last Friday was a tough one.
Gutierrez, a third-year pro, played just 9:50 in his Aces debut -- tons of family and friends were in the Sullivan Arena stands -- before getting a major interference penalty and game misconduct. He subsequently was suspended two games by the ECHL, and now he's been released.
In other Alaska hockey news, UAF goaltender Scott Greenham was named the CCHA's Player of the Month. He's 5-0-1 with a 1.14 goals-against average and .949 save percentage.
Anchorage's Jessica Cohen, a freshman forward at Providence, was named Hockey's East's Rookie of the Month. She owns 3-4--7 totals in 10 games.
Abroad, the U.S. National Women's Team opened the Four Nations Cup in Finland with a 4-0 win over the hosts, and defenseman Kerry Weiland of Palmer chipped in an assist. Not a tough one for the Americans -- they outshot the Finns 52-15.
Closer to home, both local teams -- Seawolves and Aces -- contributed to glory for opponents.
Minnesota senior forward Tony Lucia (born in Fairbanks by the way) was named the WCHA's Offensive Player of the Week after torturing UAA for five points -- three goals, two of the shorties, and two assists -- in a series sweep of the visiting Seawolves. Lucia fired a team-high nine shots on goal in the series and went +4.
Meanwhile, Idaho Steelheads rookie Richard Bachman was named the ECHL's Goaltender of the Week after going 2-0-1 against the Aces with a 2.25 goals-against average and .901 save percentage. Among the runners-up for the award was Alaska's Scott Reid, who went 1-0-1 with a 2.36 goals-against average and .944 save percentage in the series. He stopped 50 shots on Friday in a 3-2 shootout win.
