I've been a traveler since I can remember. I spread my wings as a flight attendant at age 20, then married a traveling man and we've never stopped. While based in Anchorage, we've ventured to India, Peru, Bali, Morocco, Burma, Tunisia Singapore and Ecuador. I love ferreting out places off the beaten path. And when things don't go quite as planned, that's just part of the adventure.

Highway speeders in Utah pay big time. Alaska could learn a lesson or two.

My rent-a-car taking a little roadside rest.
I've been driving in Utah for twelve days and one thing I want to warn people about, especially Alaskans who are use to ignoring speed limits is don't speed unless you want to contribute to the state and city coffers.
Both state and local police are like flies on honey everywhere. I've never seen so many officers and people pulled over ever. Law enforcement officers are everywhere and it shows by the way people drive.
Drivers here pull into the right lane after passing on a divided four lane highway. They don't hog the the left lane frustrating other drivers who are going faster. Drivers slow down and obey the speed limit when passing through small towns. Drivers pull over to the side when they talk on their cell phones. Drivers obey posted speed limits.
After living in Alaska for nearly thirty years and witnessing insanity on the roads, I find this driving culture remarkable and have to ask the question “why”. It's an easy answer, police ticket the heck out of anyone who speeds or drives recklessly.
I can literally count on one hand the number of patrol cars I have seen on the Seward, Glenn and Parks highways since I moved to Alaska. Are our brains frozen? Why don't we get the fact that people respond to emptying their wallets when they get caught speeding?
Why doesn't Alaska get the fact that everyone benefits when speeding and reckless drivers are penalized. Lives are saved, idiots are removed from the highway if they get one too many tickets and our State and cities make money.
It's a no duh! Living in the last frontier doesn't mean that everyone does as they darn well please without regard to others. Please Alaska policy makers, get a clue. Visit Utah if you need an example.
