Chief's finger broken, toilet plugged in Galena ruckus

A ruckus in Galena early Thursday ended with a suspect pepper sprayed, the police chief’s finger broken and a backed up sewer line at the station.

David Gray Huntington, 21, was charged with third- and fourth-degree assault, resisting arrest and fifth-degree criminal mischief after the fray ended.

Police chief John Millan said officers got a report of a domestic violence assault about 12:05 a.m. and responded to a home to find Huntington, who was intoxicated, being restrained by his brother, who was not.

When police approached to handcuff him, Huntington elbowed Millan in the mouth and began “kicking, head-butting, spitting, elbowing, throwing punches,” Millan said. Millan likely broke his middle finger when Huntington charged him and jammed it, he said.

Police subdued him and took him into custody without the people in the home being injured, he said. But it wasn’t over yet.

Huntington tried to kick a window out of a police car and, once at the police station, tried to flush a roll of toilet paper down the john, backing up the sewer line, Millan said.

“We got the system functioning again but it involved some work,” Millan said. “We had to clean up and shut the water off. It’s pretty miserable.”

Huntington was arraigned Friday afternoon and remained in custody at Fairbanks Correctional Center.
