Alaska Politics Blog

This is the place to talk about Alaska politics, state, local, national. Public life in the Last Frontier has rarely been more interesting -- a full slate of federal and state elections, the influence of former Gov. Sarah Palin, the usual hardball Alaska politics. Come here for news, tidbits and information, and join the discussion. We encourage lively debate, but please keep it civil and stay on point. "Will She or Won't She Be There?" (She Won't)

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

The Alaska Family Council sent out a teaser email newsletter this afternoon for its event tonight at ChangePoint church, posing the question "Will She or Won't She Be There?" over a picture of Sarah Palin.

She won't.

Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton reiterated to me today that Palin is in the Lower 48 and won’t be attending and didn't say she would. This follows yesterday's dispute between Palin and the family council over whether Palin confirmed.

The family council isn’t giving up without a fight, linking on its web site today to a statement declaring that “we look forward to Governor Palin honoring her commitment to attend.”

Here’s the full statement:

Alaskans for Parental Rights is looking forward to having former Governor Sarah Palin join us this evening for the kick-off event for our initiative to protect the right of parents to be involved in the abortion decisions of their teenage daughters.

Media reports in the last 24 hours have quoted the Governor’s spokeswoman as saying that Mrs. Palin never committed to attend the event, and that she will not be present this evening.

We have been in regular communications with the Governor’s staff over the last several weeks. We were assured that Governor Palin was personally aware of this evening’s event, and that she twice confirmed her intent to participate.

We look forward to Governor Palin honoring her commitment to attend, and we appreciate her public support of our effort to pass this important voter initiative to protect the rights of parents and the health of teenage girls.

I called Alaska Family Council President Jim Minnery today to ask him again exactly who on "the Governor's staff" that the group was speaking to.

He wouldn't tell me when I asked him yesterday, and hasn't returned my messages today.
