Alaska Politics Blog

This is the place to talk about Alaska politics, state, local, national. Public life in the Last Frontier has rarely been more interesting -- a full slate of federal and state elections, the influence of former Gov. Sarah Palin, the usual hardball Alaska politics. Come here for news, tidbits and information, and join the discussion. We encourage lively debate, but please keep it civil and stay on point. Don't use profanity, make crude comments or attack other posters. Posts that violate the Terms of Use will be deleted. Repeat offenders will lose their ability to post comments.

Alaska memorial for Lu Young set

From Sean Cockerham in Anchorage –

The Alaska memorial service for Congressman Don Young’s wife, Lu, will be Aug. 18.

It’s scheduled for 11 a.m. at the Anchorage Baptist Temple.

The Young’s were married for over 40 years and were very close. She would sometimes put her arms around the congressman when he was talking to the press, and he always made a point in his speeches of talking about how Lu was the “golden nugget” of his life that he found in Fort Yukon.

"This is obviously very hard for him, and he has ups and downs. One moment he can smile and laugh at all the great times they've had together, and the next moment he's grieving over the loss of the love of his life and best friend of almost 50 years," Young's spokeswoman, Meredith Kenny, told me this morning.

She died in her sleep last weekend at the couple’s home in Great Falls, Virginia.
