Palmer couplet meeting scheduled at Depot

From Rindi White in Wasilla:
Palmer business owners and residents will be able to comment on how they think traffic should be improved through downtown Palmer at a meeting tomorrow.
Jim Amundsen, project manager of the Palmer couplet project for the state Transportation Department, said the state will hold an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. June 23 at the Palmer Depot.

Although originally scheduled as meeting for people to comment on design details for a pair of one-way roads that would become a traffic loop through downtown Palmer, Amundsen said the focus has changed to potentially encompass more options.

The one-way street proposal would turn the Palmer-Wasilla Highway and Evergreen Avenue into a one-way road into the city. Traffic would leave the city by using Dogwood Avenue, which would become a westbound one-way road. The plan includes extending Dogwood Avenue west past Hemmer Road to make a loop that ties back into the Palmer-Wasilla Highway. But after business owners and residents repeatedly objected to the plan, Amundsen said the meeting Tuesday will aim to find a traffic solution that people can agree on.
"The focus is to identify what are the goals, the purpose and need for the project," Amundsen said Friday.

Look for more information about how the project has changed in the Wednesday Mat-Su edition.
