Alaska State Troopers Press Release of Thursday, June 18, 2009

A Detachment

Location: Ketchikan

Case number: 09-51087

Type: Boating Under the Influence of Alcohol

Text: On 6/17/09 at 1552 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to the
Mountain Point Harbor for a report from the US Coast Guard of
intoxicated boaters. Troopers arrived and contacted Melvin J. Charles,
age 69, of Ketchikan. Charles was the owner and operator of a 14-foot
aluminum skiff that had become distressed in the water off Mountain
Point. The Coast Guard towed the skiff back to the harbor. On-scene
investigations lead to the arrest of Charles for BUI. A check in APSIN
revealed Charles had a suspended driver's license. Charles refused to
submit to a chemical breath test at the Ketchikan Police Department.
Charles was transported and remanded without incident, to Ketchikan
Corrections Center for BUI, DWSOL, and Refusal to Submit to a Chemical
Test.

Location: Angoon

Case Number: 09-19330

Type: Assault III DV

Text: On 6-15-09, Johnnie J. Gamble Jr., age 26 of Angoon was charged
with one count of Domestic Violence Assault in the 3rd Degree. The
charges stemmed from an investigation into a reported assault that
occurred on 3-10-09. On 6-12-09, a Sitka Grand Jury returned a True Bill
of Indictment against Gamble. Arraignment is set for 6-18-09 in Sitka.

UPDATE: On 6-18-09, Johnnie J. Gamble Jr. was issued a summons to appear
in the Angoon District court for one count of interfering with a report
of domestic violence. Gamble was issued the summons while at arraignment
for a felony DV Assault. At that arraignment, Gamble was remanded to the
Sitka Jail with bail set a $1500.

Location: Wasilla
Case number: 09-51179
Type: Natural Death
Text: On 6/17/09 at approximately 2320 hours Alaska State Troopers
responded to a report of an expected home death at 2751 Earl Dr. in
Wasilla. Investigation revealed Adyline Nicole Sharlow, age 3 months of
Wasilla, was deceased from hydrocephalus. Next of kin were at the scene,
Comfort One was on file and the SME was notified. No foul play is
suspected.

Location: Big Lake

Case number: 09-51109

Type: MVC-D, DWLR

Text: On 6-17-09 at 1735 hours AST in Palmer responded to Stanley Road
near Kordell Drive for a reported 2 vehicle motor vehicle collision.
Subsequent investigation revealed Paul Nibur, age 40, of Big Lake was
backing his vehicle out of his driveway when he was struck by Carol
Austin, age 61, of Big Lake as she was traveling down Stanley Road.
Neither party reported any injuries and both reported wearing their
seatbelts. Nibur was subsequently issued a summons for DWLR and a
citation for Proof Of Insurance.

Location: Palmer

Case number: 09-51183

Type: DWLS / MICS IV

Text: On 06/17/09, at approximately 2222 hours, AST stopped Stephanie M.
Nichols, age 25 of Anchorage, near Daron Drive in Palmer after the
vehicle she was driving was reported as a REDDI (Report Every Drunk
Driver Immediately). During the stop Nichols was found to be driving on
a suspended license. The passenger in Nichols vehicle was identified as
John R. Wagner, age 22 of Palmer. K9 "Roelle" also responded to the
scene and assisted with the investigation. During the investigation
Wagner was found to be in possession of heroin. Nichols was arrested
for Driving While License Suspended and Wagner was arrested for
Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance IV. Both were transported
to the Mat-Su Pretrial Facility and remanded into their custody. Bail
for Nichols was set at $1,000. Bail for Wagner was set at $1,500.

Type: DUI, DWLR

Text: On 6-18-09 at 0109 hours AST in Palmer arrested William L. Murray
II, age 29, of Wasilla for DUI and DWLR after he was stopped for an
equipment violation on Vienna Woods Street in Wasilla. He was remanded
at MatSu Pretrial Facility and held on $1000.00 bail.

Location: Palmer

Case number: 09-51412

Type: Motor Vehicle Collision Involving Injuries

Text: On 6/18/09 at 1322 hours, Alaska State Troopers responded to a two
vehicle motor vehicle collision involving injuries at one mile Trunk Rd.
in Palmer. Investigation revealed Glenda M. Warren, age 18 of Wasilla
was operating her 1995 Chevrolet Suburban south bound on Trunk Rd.
Joseph A. Skeete, age 40 of Anchorage was operating his 1999 Ford
Expedition north bound on Trunk Rd. Warren was traveling at a higher
rate of speed than the posted speed limit, failed to negotiate a corner,
lost control of the vehicle she was operating, skidded sideways into the
oncoming lane of travel and struck Skeete's vehicle causing him serious
physical injuries. Warren was checked by medics on scene and cleared.
Skeete was transported to MSRMC. Both individuals were wearing their
seat belts. Both vehicles were totaled. Investigation continues.

Location: Trapper Creek
Case number: 09-51446
Type: Driving While License Suspended (DWLS)
Text: On 6/18/09 at approximately 1428 hours, Talkeetna AST stopped a
1998 Jeep Cherokee at Mile 3 Petersville Road in Trapper Creek for an
equipment violation. Subsequent investigation revealed that the driver,
Robert Borton, 27 of Anchorage, was driving with a suspended AK drivers
license. Borton was issued a summons to appear in court for DWLS and
was released from the scene. Borton was unable to locate a licensed
driver to drive his vehicle so it was towed from the scene at his
request.

Case Number: 09-49489

Type: Harassment

Text: On 6-13-09, at approximately 1400 hours, the Alaska State Troopers
in McGrath received a report of an assault at the Teen Center.
Investigation revealed that no assault took place. However, an adult
female from McGrath had been harassed by a juvenile female, also from
McGrath. Case is under investigation and will be forwarded to the
District Attorney's office for review.

Location: Kokhanok
Case number: 09-51067
Type: Assault 4 DV
Text: On 6-17-09 the Alaska State Troopers in King Salmon were notified
of an assault in the village of Kokhanok. Investigation revealed that
John Rickteroff, age 36 of Kokhanok had assaulted his girlfriend.
Ricktroff fled on his four-wheeler before Troopers arrived in the
village. Troopers were unable to locate Richteroff and a warrant will be
issued for his arrest. Investigation continues.

Case number: 09-51064
Type: Assault 4 DV
Text: On 6-17-09 the Alaska State Troopers in King Salmon investigated a
domestic violence assault in the village of Kokhanok. Investigation
revealed that Trefim Wassillie, age 48 of Kokhanok had assaulted his
wife, in their residence in Kokhanok. Trefim was arrested and
transported to King Salmon where he was remanded to the jail.

Location: Nondalton
Case number: 09-49431
Type: MCA / Disorderly Conduct
Text: On 6-9-09 at 1416 hours, The Alaska State Troopers in King Salmon
were notified of a minor that was consuming alcohol and being
belligerent in the village of Nondalton. Billy Trefon Jr., age 48 of
Nondalton reported that Chad Koktelash, age 20, also of Nondalton had
been drinking. Koktelash was reported to be outside Chuck Trefon's
residence kicking and beating on the door. When Koktelash would not
leave, Trefon Jr. grabbed him and tried to force him to leave. Koktelash
began swinging and kicking at Trefon Jr. Koktelash finally left when two
more people showed up at the residence. Investigation continues.

Type: Assault II X 2 (DV), Assault IV X 3 (DV)

Text: On June 18, 2009, Alaska State Troopers received a report that 28
year old David Andrew of Marshall assaulted his parents and sister.
Investigation revealed that during the early morning hours of the 18th,
David entered his parent's residence intoxicated and assaulted his
family members. Andrew was arrested and transported to Bethel where he
was remanded to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Correctional Center.

Type: Warrant Arrest
Text: On 6/18/09 at 0240 hours, Geoff Timm, age 19 of Kasilof, was
arrested by Soldotna Troopers on an outstanding warrant, when he was
contacted during an unrelated investigation. Timm was taken into
custody without incident and remanded to Wildwood Pretrial Facility.
Timm was held in lieu of $500 cash bail. The warrant was for Burglary 1
and Theft 3.

Type: Theft II
Text: On 04/17/09 at approximately 0600 hours, the Alaska State Troopers
received a report of a vehicle stolen in Sterling. Investigation
revealed that a brown 1989 Chevy pickup had been stolen from a residence
in Sterling sometime between the hours of 2200 on 04/16/09 and 0600
04/17/09.

Investigation is ongoing in this case. Anyone with any information is
asked to contact the Troopers at 262-4453.

Type: Assault III; Burglary I

Text: On 06-18-09, at approximately 0109 hours, Alaska State Troopers
responded to a residence off of Pollard Loop to investigate the report
of an unknown male who entered a residence, pointed a revolver towards a
female, and then exited the residence. The unknown male was described
as a wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, ski mask, and blue jeans.
Anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect are
encouraged to contact the Alaska State Troopers at 262-4453.

Case number: 09-51324
Type: Death Investigation / SAR

Text: On 6/18/09, at 0914 hours, Troopers received a report that a
person had died on the Devil's Creek Trail the previous night. An
investigation showed that Sarah Thorn, 25 of Girdwood, had died while
hiking with a friend. Troopers responded to the area by helicopter to
investigate and recover the body. The investigation is ongoing. Next
of kin have been notified of Thorn's death.

Case number: 09-22212

Type: Unsworn Falsification in the 2nd (x5), Hunt Moose without Locking
Tag (x2), Personal Use Fish without License (x2), Hunt Sheep without
Locking Tag, Hunt Sheep without Guide and Guide without License.

Text: On 06-18-09 the Soldotna Wildlife Troopers served Gerald K.
VanKooten, 58 yoa from Grand Rapids Michigan with a summons. A residency
investigation conducted over the winter revealed that VanKooten is a
college professor for Calvin College in Grand Rapids and has been
teaching full time since 2004. Additionally, VanKooten has been taking
a tax exemption on his home in MI. Since moving to MI, VanKooten has
continued to hunt and fish in AK as a resident. VanKooten has been
charged with 5 Counts of Unsworn Falsification on applications for sport
licenses, 2 Counts of hunting moose without a locking tag, 2 Counts of
Personal Use Fishing without a valid resident sport license, 1 Count of
hunting sheep without a locking tag, 1 Count of hunting sheep without a
guide and 1 count of guiding without a license. Arraignment is schedule
for June 30th in the District Court of Kenai.

Type: Possession and Distribution of Child Pornography Investigation and
Sentencing

Text: (ANCHORAGE, Alaska) - On December 21, 2007, the Alaska Bureau of
Investigation (ABI) received a lead from a joint FBI/ICE/USPIS
investigation of known child pornography websites located in Italy
(Operation Koala). During this investigation, it was determined that
1,400 individual email addresses associated with the United States
purchased child pornography from these websites. Nikiski resident SAMUEL
DEMPSY ADAMS JR. was identified as being one of the individuals who had
purchased several videos of child pornography. ADAMS Jr. is a registered
sex offender in the state of Alaska.

On 1-18-08, ABI Computer and Financial Crime Unit served a search
warrant at ADAMS residence, located on Alexander Road, in Nikiski. The
initial on scene investigation revealed that ADAMS had images of Child
Pornography on CD's found at his residence. Three computers and several
external hard drives were seized. ADAMS was arrested that day and was
charged with five counts of Possession of Child Pornography. Later,
several thousand images and movies of child sexual abuse were found
during the forensic examination. On 1-25-08, a grand jury in Kenai
indicted ADAMS JR. for fifty (50) counts of Possession of Child
Pornography. On March 24, 2009, ADAMS pled guilty to three counts of
Possession of Child Pornography. Adams was sentenced to serve 9 years in
jail, 4 years of probation, and will remain a registered sex offender.

This was a joint Internet Crimes Against Children investigation (ICAC).
The ABI CFCU was assisted by ICE, FBI, Soldotna ABI, USPIS and Kenai PD.

Type: DUI
Text: On 6-17-09 at 2010 hours the Alaska State Troopers responded to a
report of a boat in the roadway at Bogard Road at Sebastian Drive in
Wasilla. Investigation revealed that Douglas Hodgson (56 YOA of
Anchorage) was driving his 2005 Dodge pickup and was pulling a boat when
the boat came off the trailer and came to a rest on Bogard Road.
Further investigation revealed that Hodgson was driving while under the
influence of alcohol. Hodgson was arrested and booked at the Mat Su Pre
Trial Facility on the charge of DUI where he was held on a bail of
$500.00. The boat sustained minor damages.

Type: MVC-D/DUI
Text: On 6-17-09 at 1721 hours the Alaska State Troopers Bureau of
Highway Patrol South Central Team responded to a single vehicle
collision near mile 2 Old Glenn Highway in Palmer. Investigation
revealed that Neal Denmon (30 YOA of Anchorage) was driving his 1990
Honda sedan when he lost control of slid into a guardrail.
Investigation also revealed that Denmon was driving while under the
influence of alcohol. Denmon was arrested and booked at the Mat Su Pre
Trial Facility on the charge of DUI, where bail was set at $2500 with a
CATP. The damage to the vehicle is estimated at $4,000.00. Denmon
reported wearing his seatbelt and no injuries were sustained in the
crash.
