Location: Nome
Case number: 09-36318
Type: Search and Rescue
Text: On 5/7/09 at approximately 1100 hours, Steven Longley, 48 yoa of
Nome, reported that Robert D. Blodgett, 31 yoa of Nome, was overdue from
a snow machine trip. Longley reported that Blodgett had left Nome on a
snowmachine on 5/4/09 and was supposed to return on 5/6/09. Longley is
familiar with the area and had adequate survival equipment. Weather
conditions were warm and traveling in the area via snowmachine has been
extremely slow due to open water leads on rivers, and poor snow
conditions. A friend of Blodgett left Nome on his own to look for
Blodgett on 5/7/09. Local air carriers were notified and requested to
be on the look out for Blodgett during flight over the area. On 5/8/09,
Blodgett had still not returned to Nome. Nome Volunteer Search and
Rescue and Teller Search and Rescue groups were contacted. Both groups
determined that search via snowmachine or ground bases equipment would
be extremely difficult and dangerous due to the conditions. Weather has
precluded an aerial search. Once weather conditions improve search
aircraft will be launched to search the area for Blodgett.
