A prisoner at Hiland Mountain Correctional Center awaiting trial on assault charges will be hit with new felony counts after she shanked a guard this week, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Mariam Ketchum, 23, could be facing felony assault charges after she attacked a guard with a “manufactured weapon” on Monday at about 5:25 p.m., troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said.
Peters said she didn’t know if the guard was targeted or if Ketchum lashed out at random.
The guard and another who intervened received minor, non-fatal injuries, she said.
Peters refused to name the guards involved, citing state domestic violence privacy laws.
Court records indicate Ketchum was jailed last month on charges of first- and fourth-degree assault.
