Dog Blog

The Dog Blog is a community of ordinary dog lovers who have come together to discuss our extraordinary dogs. Each Monday, a new topic is introduced. If you've got an opinion, share it. If not, look for the current "anything goes" topic and introduce a discussion of your own. On Fridays, weigh in about your training questions and successes.
Your host: Mike Lewis is a little-dog nerd and the proud owner of Eddie and Jillian, a pair of Yorkies who think they're Labs, and Rusty, an elderly Lab who thinks he's a Yorkie.

The Alaska Pet Idol finals were held today, and it was quite a show. Fifteen dogs and owners strutted their stuff on stage before a panel of judges and a standing-room-only crowd at Alaska Mill and Feed.

In the end, Shelby, a bullmastiff owned by Gail Painter, was crowned champ after a "Go down low and go" fire-safety demonstration that included some kids following Shelby across the stage.

Second place went to Bogie, a very smart westie, who performed some of his agility tricks, including the teeter-totter right on stage. My apologies, I didn't catch the owner's name.

And third place, da da da, went to Dog Blogger Chelsey Homan and Skipper, the husky mix. I may be just a little partial, but Skipper rocked with an array of tricks and pure cuteness.

First, check out these stunning pictures in ADN photographer Marc Lester's photo gallery.

Here are some videos of the top three place winners. I taped the whole top 15, so if any of the finalists would like me to put their performance on youtube, send me an e-mail. mlewis@adn.com. Do it quick, though, because I'm famous for losing these tapes.
